Essure Tubal Sterilization
Posted On: Thursday, November 29th, 2007

What is Essure?

Essure is a mechanical device that blocks the fallopian tube at the uterus.Essure is a permanent birth control device that has recently become available as an alternative to traditional tubal ligation methods. The spring-like device is inserted through the uterine cavity into the tubal openings using a hysteroscope. This can be done as an in-office procedure. The device expands to fill the tubal opening and then becomes scarred into place, forming a barrier so that sperm cannot reach the egg. Because of the scar formation, it cannot be pulled out of the tube. It is advertised by the manufacturer as a permanent method of birth control. In this respect, it is similar to other tubal ligation methods that are considered by most doctors to be permanent.

Here is a link to an online video animation of the placement of the Essure device into the fallopian tubes.

Is Tubal Reversal Possible For The Essure Device?

I perform 4 tubal reversal procedures each day at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. The women who come here have all varieties of tubal ligation methods. Today, one of the patients had the Essure sterilization method. When she chose this form of tubal sterilization, she was unaware that she would become remarried and want to be able to try to have a child with her new husband.

Inserting the fallopian tube into a new opening in the uterus is called tubouterine implantation.Although I could not find any previous references regarding attempts to reverse the Essure procedure, I agreed to attempt to perform a reversal for her. The way I did this was to cut the device out of the uterine muscle and then implant the remaining fallopian tube into the uterine cavity through a new opening in the uterus. This procedure is called tubouterine implantation.

The reason I removed the device was that part of the metal spring projects into the uterine cavity. If a pregnancy were to occur with the device in place, this could be harmful to the pregnancy. To my knowledge, this is the first time that the Essure sterilization procedure has been reversed.

  1. Rhonda Brown RN Says:

This just shows that experience truely matters when you are looking into tubal reversal surgery. Dr. Berger uses his skill, experience and care for his patients to once again perform another successful tubal reversal procedure. Women that have had newer methods of sterilization now have hope if they have changed their minds about wanting more children.

  2. Pam Mills CRNA Says:

It was quite an exciting day at the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as the staff watched Dr Berger perform the Essure sterilization tubal reversal.
This truly is another example of how Dr Berger’s experience and devotion to his patients makes all the difference.
    Nice work Dr Berger!

  3. Alysia Says:

I am so excited to hear this. I have been wondering if this could be accomplished. I am interested having this procedure reversed as well. I am in the process of having my paperwork completed by my doctor and hopefully when I submit it, I will be a candidate for reversal as well..

great blog, just added you to google blog reader.

  5. Tubal Reversal » What to Know if You Want Tubes Untied Says:

[...] Essure is another new tubal sterilization procedure. This does not require surgery, but it is the least reversible method for women wanting kids after tubal ligation. [...]

  8. amster Says:

I have been reading for hours and finally found a little bit of positive feed back. Glad to hear I’m not the only one wanting to reverse this procedure. I also am wondering if any pregnancies after the reversal……

  9. Lisa Says:

I am also glad to hear that there is a reversal for Essure. Has anyone else had the procedure done that’s 40+ and if so i would love to read about your experience and has any pregnancies happened as a result. I am thinking about having the procedure done myself but i need to be sure. Good Luck to everyone! Remember God answers prayers!

  10. tabatha Says:

I am so relieved to hear this can be reversed.I already have 3 boys but my boyfriend does not have any and we would love to have 1 together. So I’m just wonder how to go about it.Who do I talk to?How expensive is it?

Im so happy to hear that the essure procedure can be reversed. Im a young mother of two that had the procedure done three years ago.Now Im regreting having the procedure done, an was looking for a way to have another baby later on in my future. i also want to know are ther any known pregnancies after the reversal an also the cost of the procedure.

  13. mecola roberson Says:

It was a blessing that I found you guys online! My companion and I would like to conceive. He is 42 with no children and I have two from my previous marriage. I never knew that I would fall in love again and want to have another child. I had the Essure process done several years ago and have been very sad about not being able to conceive. Last night we discussed our options and the cost of IVF. I knew there had to be a better and more cost efficient option out there for us! Fortunately, I was correct. We are concerned that he may not have a strong sperm count. Does he need to go to a urologist to find out and will he need to send the results to your office? Or would you send a request to a local lab here for him to get tested? We would like to find out about his sperm count before we proceed with reversal. Second, what has the success rate been for your Essure reversals? I don’t see these results on any of your results pages. I turn 34 on tomorrow and am anxious to get the ball rolling because of the age factors. Thanks Mecola Roberson

  14. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Mrs. Roberson

You can have your companion go to his primary care doctor and have them order a semen analysis. This way he can have a complete evaluation and if there are any semen problems then they will have his complete medical history and will be in a better position to make a referral or start treatment should there be any sperm abnormalities. Please feel free to fax the results of the semen analysis to us and we can evaluate the report for you.

We do Essure reversals. To reverse Essure, a tubal reimplantation must be done. Dr. Berger has been doing reimplantation procedures for many years to reverse other types of tubal ligations. He has trained me to do them as well. In general, the success rate is about 30-50% in achieving pregnancy.

The Essure procedure has only been out for about five years and we have recently begun performing tubal reimplantation to reverse the Essure sterilization. The number of women seeking Essure reversal is low but is growing every year and we continue to add to our pool of statistics and will publish this information when we get a good and large enough data set so patients can be well informed. In general, tubal reimplantation gives you a 30-50% chance of pregnancy success.

Please feel free to contact our office or me by email with any further questions. Our contact information can be found on our home page.

  15. Jill Says:

So has anyone got pregnate after the essure procedure. I had it done about 2 years ago and I am curious about the chance of having a healthy baby. I have not had a period in three months and I have taken a test which said negative. My doctor blammed the lack of periods to weight gain. What else could cause me not to have a period??

  16. Leana Says:

my husband and I hvae decided that after 2 years of having the essure that we want to concieve another child. We have been looking into IVF but the cost is so high!! My OB/GYN stated that I have a very healthy uterus and cervix but I was wondering could I by pass these procedures by just having an IUI? Is that possible or would I have to resort to reversal or IVF?

  17. Dr. Berger Says:

IUI would not lead to pregnancy since the Essure device blocks the tube at the uterus. For pregnancy to occur, the alternatives are either the part of the tube and uterine muscle that has the Essure device scarred with it must be removed and the remaining segment of tube implanted into the uterine cavity (tubal implantation) or ivf.

  18. IVF Alternative | Tubal Surgery | Tubal Reversal Blog Says:

[...] Some women have blocked fallopian tubes due to an inflammatory condition termed salpingitis isthmica nodosa (SIN). This condition causes tubal scarring and blockage at the proximal or isthmic portion of tube that is adjacent to the uterine wall. The operation to correct proximal tubal occlusion is  tubal implantation. Tubal implantation is also used for Essure reversal. [...]

  19. Courtney Says:

I had essure done on July 2, 2008. I have been having really bad cramps from the procedure ever since they were put in. I do not want any more children, but do want the implants out NOW!!!! Do I still have to have a tubal implantation? Can I just have them taken out since I do not want anymore children. Please help. Thank you

  20. Heather Says:

Just remember we had this procedure for a reason, its something to really think about. Wanting to get a reversal just because you meet someone new is not a good choice, that is one of the things they talk to you about before you have the Essure done. There are tons of orphans out there waiting for a family , if you really want another baby think about adopting.

  21. Lisa Says:

I had this procedure done on June 10, 2008 and I’ve noticed that I now get HORRIBLE cramps. I just figured it was because I was no longer on the pill and regulating my hormones. Anyway – I’m 35 and never really wanted to have kids so I had this done. Of course, now I’ve met a really great guy who is a great daddy – but now I can’t have any. I’m glad to see that there it is possible to have this reversed IF there is ever a need for it.

  22. Marie Says:

I am contemplating having the Essure procedure done, as my husband and I are finished having children. Outside of your clients later deciding they want children, what are some of the other reasons woman are having this procedure reversed? I am somewhat uncertain about having the tubes in my tubes with no long term research on it’s affects to the body.

  23. Heather Says:

I have a very good reason for you Marie, the death of your child. My daughter died after she had a tonsilectomy and now I want to have the reversal so my husband and I can have another child together. I just cant find enough data to decide if it is a better option to have a reversal or IVF.

  24. Anonymous Says:

I was wondering if anyone has had a baby after the Essure reversal surgery. I am very interested in the procedure and feel I am a good candidate because I am only 31 and healthy.

  25. Charles Monteith MD Says:

We can reverse Essure with a tubal implantation procedure- we have several of these procedures scheduled for February 2009. The pregnancy rate is 30-50%.

  26. Anna Leary Says:

    Thank you,

  27. debra Says:

hi, was curious if anyone that had the essure put in noticed a lower sex drive at all thanks

  28. Charles Monteith MD Says:

It is possible, but not common. Possible reasons could be something else all together or related to the Essure sterilization. We do have patients who have sterilization procedures relate to us they experienced decreased sex drive after their procedures; however, the reasons for this are unclear.

  29. Heather from Baltimore Says:

I had the essure procedure in 2006 and I have lost my sex drive completely! I am only 31 and recently remarried. Is there anything that can be done to get my sex drive back? If I had a reversal done would that help?

  30. CJ Says:

I was just wondering if anyone knows for sure the chances of someone getting pregnant after the procedure. I DO NOT want any more children. I’m 25 and just had my fourth child in July. I had the procedure done in August. At first I was having a period every 2 weeks then at the end of Jan they stopped. I’ve since had many many symptoms of pregnancy. I honestly haven’t taken a pregnancy test because I’m afraid of what the results will be. After looking on the Internet I’ve found a few other accounts of people getting pregnant, but none are far enough along to see if it will be a healthy pregnancy. Also, I have had several miscarriages and almost died from hemorrhaging after having my daughter in July. Will this increase my risks of having problems IF I am pregnant?

  31. new mommy again? Says:

I had the Essure done a year ago and just found out I am pregnant! I am okay with this and so is my husband since we had planned to not have more and this happened all on its own. What is the percentage of women with this device that have actually become pregnant while with the device? Anyone know the possibilities of success? Just wondering. We are okay either way, but now that the baby is there it will be a sad loss if unsuccessful.

  32. Charles Monteith MD Says:

As long as the pregnancy is in the uterus then it should be successful.

  33. Melissa Tash Says:

I had the essure procedure done at the time I was married and we had three children all ready, since then I have become divorced and have met the guy of my dreams, my only worry is that he wants children and I also wouldn’t mind having one more with him. He’s great to my kids. I really want the reversal procedure done. How much is this procedure the range of the costs. I really want to go through with this. Its disappointing that everyone around us are able to have children and they are not even wanting that, and someone like myself I am 28 years old and at a stage in my life that I really want this. Can anyone help me out.

  34. Dr. Berger Says:

    MELISSA -

Click on “Cost” under “Practical Issues” on the navigation menu at the top left of the page. It will answer your questions about cost. Either Dr. Monteith or I would be happy to help you reverse the Essure procedure.

  35. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Melissa
We reverse the Essure with a procedure called tubal implantation. It has a 25-50% success rate. Please contact us for a free phone consultation if you are interested (919) 968-4656.

  36. EssureMommy Says:

    Hello-
I am pregnant with my coils still in place. Baby implanted correctly and I am 1/2 way through a totally healthy pregnancy. Yes…you can still get pregnant, and Yes…you can have a healthy baby.

  37. EssureMommy Says:

CJ – I too had my period every two weeks, I went to the doc for than and they said I was having “mid cycle” periods. Within the MONTH I was pregnant.

  38. tennill camp Says:

I am 33 years old. I had the Essure done in 2007 and now I am dating a really good guy. This year I’ve been having really bad pains in my one ovary, peeing a lot, my breasts are very sore, I’ve been vomiting and having lower back pains. It sounds likeI am having an ectopic pregnancy. I would love to have a normal pregnancy. My number is 941 592 4163.

  39. Stganya Says:

I am interested in the Essure reversal and i would like to know the cost. If someone can give me any information please contact me at pittbullkid6978@aol.com or 570-351-7012 ty stanya

  40. Dr. Berger Says:

Read the Tubal Reversal Cost page for information on the fee options.

  41. Danielle Says:

I am so pleased to know that this procedure can be reversed. I have had the essure since May 2008 and feel that I may want to have children again. Since I have had essure, I have had spotting in between my periods and cramping, which I did not have prior to having the essure done. Once again, I am glad to know that essure can be reversed.

  42. lucy Says:

I am 35 years old I got the Essure done October 2007. I have been getting little cramps that come and go. My breasts have been hurting for about 2 1/2 weeks all ready. My last period was on may 29, 2009. Is there a chance of pregnancy? Or is this the symptoms you get after the procedure? Has any one gotten pregnant after the procedure and had the baby?

  43. Dr. Berger Says:

LUCY – Pregnancy is possible after an Essure procedure. Most women have an HSG several months after the Essure device is implanted to ensure that both tubes are blocked. If you suspect that you may be pregnant, run a pregnancy test and if positive report it right away to your doctor. It is possible to get pregnant after the procedure and have a baby.

  44. Cyntia Says:

I have a friend who had ESSURE and she bled for 4 months and had horrible cramps. They removed the ESSURE and now she feels better.

  45. Dani Says:

CJ- did you get pregnant? hope not. I was reading your case and is similar what is happening to me now. My Essure was done 4/2008. I had heavy periods for the rest of the year and part of 2009. Then suddenly, shorter/lighter periods, only spotting in my last “period” and that was May 5th. Some nausea some mornings. Anyone has something to say? I feel so horrible, don’t mind if another child (4th) comes down the road, but right now is outrageous. Oh my God, I’m so scared to even test.

  46. Saddie Says:

I am scheduled to have Essure done next week and was concerned about side effects. Besides cramping does anyone have any other things to share. I am 100% positive I will never want another child. Even if I later met someone who wants children we would have to end things. I am trying to put my daughter through college and could not imagine what that would be like in another 18 years. I am however scared of the side effects so anyone with any information would really set me at ease. Thanks.

  47. PREGNANT!!!??? Says:

PREGNANT!!! I can’t believe all the stuff I am finding out now. My wife was “fixed” in February 2008 In February 2009 we went in for the test to see for 100% blockage. Guess what = 2 doctors said “yep 100% blocked”. She conceived on March 6th with a healthy baby girl due on Thanksgiving day. We have 3 boys and we were done, now we have a girl whom we will love (I already do) very much (Heather). But this is very unexpected. Our doctor assured us this was the best out there, Essure tubal, BS 99.99% successful. Imm not so sure now. So, to answer all the questions above in a nut shell:
1 yes it can be reversed
2 yes you can get pregnant
3 yes you can get pregnant even with it in
4 yes it can be healthy
5 my wife has had terrible cramps ever since installed
6 yes she lost her sex drive at 30
7 still has the occasional bleed
8 yes her boobs hurt all the time.
9 my opinion… look for another method
    10 I WANT A REFUND!

  48. Re-Sterilization? Says:

My failed Essure is giving us a new baby this year and now I am faced with having to be re-sterilized. I would like to just have both of my fallopian tubes removed and not have a tubal ligation at the other end of the tube where the Essure is not located. Can this be done at any OB office, or would it be better to have it done somewhere like your office where you specialize in the removal of the Essure micro inserts? I am not willing to continue with the pain and discomfort that has come with this procedure (that also was not disclosed to me when it was done)or the possibility of conception again in the future. I am able to send my records for review if desired. Thank you. Carlene

  49. Dr. Berger Says:

CARLENE – I have responded to you by email. I can remove the Essure implants and perform bilateral salpingectomies at the same time if you wish and if you are unable to find a local doctor who can do this for you.

  50. Brandy Says:

I had the essure procedure done over a year ago. My doctor put one coil in the right tube, but put two coils in my left tube. When I went to see if the tubes were blocked I saw that the two coils are not end to end the bottom one sticks up over the top one. I have been having pain on the left side every since the procedure, some days I have no pain but other days I feel like i’m being stabbed on the left side down in my pelvic area, about 3 months ago when I had my period I passed nothing but clots (big clots like I was having a miscarriage). I went to the doctore they said I was getting older and my periods could be changing (I’m 32). I have also noticed in the last 5 months that right before I start I swell and look like I am about 5 or 6 months pregnant. I’m not sure what to do, do I have the coils removed? Leave them in and deal with the pain? I don’t know what to do, I don’t want anymore kids so I chose to have this done because I have already had three c-sections and didn’t want to be cut on again. Can someone please help me out, should I be concerned with the two coils? please email me at mcmahan@fuse.net. Thank you

  51. terri Says:

I had the procedure done 10-08 it still has not closed one side. Now I have to get a regular tubal ligation. Does anyone else feel like a flutter and have really bad cramps after the Essure procedure?

  52. Jen Says:

Hello. I would like to get in contact with anyone who has had the Essure reversal done. I had the Essure procedure in November of 2007 and would like to have them removed. Please email me at Eleven.Needles@gmail.com. Thank you.

  53. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jen
We do perform Essure reversal. Feel free to call the office at (919) 968-4656 for a nurse consultation.

  54. Ms. C Says:

I had the Essure procedure done July 15, 2009 and I have been having severe back pain since. Has anyone else experienced this?

  55. Crystal Says:

I had the Essure tubal blockage procedure on Oct.28,2008. I am 24 yrs. old and have 1 child. I decided to get this procedure done because I was 18 when I had my son. Dealing with the labor pain and stress of raising a child was very traumatic for me. Now I wish I thought more about my decision. Ever since I had the procedure done I have had a lot of cramping. When I am on my menstrual I cramp even worse and have a lot of back pain.. and now I read all of the blogs. Now its pretty scary. Is there is a possibility I can get pregnant?

  56. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Crystal
Although pregnancy has been reported after the Essure procedure, the chance is very, very rare. I would not count on this if you desire another child.

If you would like to have another child then you will have to undergo IVF or have an Essure reversal procedure. This procedure is a tubo-uterine implantation. The success rate of tubal reversal averages 70%. The tubo-uterine implantation procedure has a success range of 25-50%.

  57. Lily Says:

I had the Essure done in 2008 when I was 25. My husband insisted and my doctor didn’t really explain much. I should have considered it more carefully. The doctor was very convincing and nonchalant about the procedure so I didn’t think much of it! However, this shouldn’t really be an excuse I should have researched it more myself to fully understand the permanency of the procedure! My husband divorced me there a few months after. I always wanted another baby and now that I am happy and with someone that loves me very much I can’t conceive. I have had severe cramping ever since the procedure, back pain during menstruation, and I get really sharp pains on my lower left side! I truly regret my sterilization having this procedure done. I’m in Nebraska and as far as I know there is no one here that can reverse the Essure and it is so expensive to have it reversed I could never afford it.

  58. Emily Pope Says:

I want the Essure procedure removed not just because of the physical pain and discomfort it causes me but also because of my renewed faith in God. I believe that both reason are just as important. I live in the Florida panhandle and the only doctors around here tell me it is not reversible so I thank everyone who has made posts to this site it has given me more faith that I just may get pregnant again.

  59. 2 Months on Essure and 7 extra Pounds Says:

I had the Essure procedure and was very excited about not having hormones in my body. However, I have almost stopped having bowel movements and I have gained 7-8 pounds in the last 2 months. I have not changed anything about my diet and exercise on a regular basis. I do not have the cramping that some are experiencing but now I am a little worried that the weight gain is going to proceed. I guess if it does I will have to consider reversal. Has anyone else had the side effects I have experienced? Any suggestions?

  60. Dear Drs. Says:

I had Essure done about 6 months ago. I’ve been having recurring pain where the coils were placed. For the last few days, it feels like something is poking. From my reading on the internet, I am afraid that the coils may be perforating. It seems the only way to remove the coils is to have a hysterectomy. Is that true? What procedure will you do in this case? Is there any way to remove Essure coils without having a hysterectomy? Thank you much.

    TLV

  61. Charles Monteith MD Says:

The Essure coils can be removed without having a hysterectomy. We remove the coils surgically by removing the portion of the uterine muscle the coils are embedded in. This allows you to save your uterus. You can also become pregnant again if we re-insert the tubes into the cavity by a process called tubouterine implantation.

You are welcome to call the office for a free nurse consultation at (919)968-4656.

Members of the Tubal Reversal Message Board frequently discuss removal of the Essure coils and Essure Reversal.

  62. want to have a baby Says:

I had the Essure done on June 2007. I have cramps out of nowhere and sharp pains. Every month my stomach looks like I am 5 to 6 months pregnant. I pray to god to have another baby with my husband and I really hate I had this done. I want to have a baby with my husband. Is there any hope for me? Can Essure be reversed? Can anyone respond?

  63. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Want to have a baby
We can reverse Essure. Call our office to speak with a nurse about the details at (919) 968-4656.
Members of our message board discuss pregnancies after tubal reversal and the hope they have of becoming pregnant.

  64. Lindsay George-Wolburg Says:

I had the Essure done in July and it is now the end of August. I have been having tremendous mid and lower back pain for weeks now. I have been to the Dr. 5 times, all different Dr.’s trying to figure out what is wrong. They keep telling me that they think that it is muscular. I KNOW that this is not muscular. It is like someone has hit me in the back with a baseball bat. I have tried different medications and nothing is helping. The pain is so bad that a 10mg. Hydrocodone doesn’t touch it. Looking back, the pain started about a week after the Essure was done. I am wondering if it the Essure is causing all of this. Please let me know what you think. My email is lwolburg@gmail.com. Please help! I can’t take this any more.

  65. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Lindsay

We have had women report changes after the Essure. I encourage you to work closely with your doctor to evaluate for all possible causes. If no cause can be determined then you can consider having an Essure reversal with us. Currently the Essure is too new to give us any insight into how Essure reversal will help your pain. Many of our patients who have had adverse symptoms after tubal ligation do report improvement after tubal ligation reversal.

  66. Jeni Nelson Says:

What is the cost to have an Essure reversal done? I had the Essure placed in Aug of 2005. I have since remarried and would like to have a child with my new husband. There is a place in Georgia that charges nearly $8000 for the procedure to be reversed!

  67. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jenni
We charge the same for Essure reversal as we do with reversal of a standard tubal ligation reversal.
At the time of this response, the cost of Essure reversal is $5,400 with Dr. Monteith and $5,900 with Dr. Berger.

  68. ROBETTE RUSSELL Says:

I had the Essure done in June 2008. Now I found my soul mate and he is great with kids. Can I reverse the Essure procedure?

  69. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Robette
Yes you can reverse the Essure. The procedure is called a tubouterine implantation procedure. We do this type of reversal and Essure reversal costs the same as reversal of a standard tubal ligation reversal procedure.

  70. nawana Says:

I have had the Essure now for three years and I have two beautiful little girls. I thought I was finished but now I want to try a third time for a little boy. Does anyone know if someone has had a baby after Essure reversal?

  71. Debbie Says:

I had the Essure procedure done about 2 years ago. My doctor said I had 100% blockage at my check up. I have not been sexually active at all. But recently my boobs hurt and I always have this hunger pain in my throat…. any ideas?

  72. Debbie Says:

I forgot to add in my first comment that recently I have been sexually active. I had the procedure done about 2 yrs ago and have not been sexually active since the procedure till recently and now my hunger is changing and my boobs hurt… any ideas?

  73. Dr. Berger Says:

Have you considered running a pregnancy test?

  74. Debbie Says:

I did a test today.. I am not pregnant

  75. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Debbie
You should see your doctor and be evaluated for thyroid conditions and ovulation problems.

  76. D Says:

So I had Essure a few years ago. At the beginning of this year I had a tummy tuck. I am 27 years old and have had 3 c sections. Anyways, I’m thinking that in the next few years I might want to have another baby. My Fiance does not have any kids of his own and I would like to give him one or two. I’m curious about Essure reversal and the fact that I had 3 c sections and then a tummy tuck. Is it still possible??

  77. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    D

  81. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Kris
Essure reversal requires a tubouterine implantation procedure. The pregnancy success rate of this procedure is approximately 57%.

The alternative way to obtain pregnancy is IVF. IVF is approximately 35% for each IVF cycle attempted.

I got the Essure procedure done in August of 2007 and I have had the most terrible cramps ever and have had extremely heavy bleeding during period time. In April of 2009 I got pregnant and 16 weeks later I miscarried. Me and my fiance want to conceive a baby but cant afford to get this reversed. Any options or opinions on what I can do? If I get pregnant again will I be able to have a healthy child or is there more of a chance to have a ectopic pregnancy?

  85. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Amber
If you become pregnant after the Essure you should seek the opinion of your doctor. Either one of your tubes is partially or fully open. This could be a dangerous situation because it could increase the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy. In most of these cases the only way to become pregnant after the Essure procedure is to have an Essure reversal or IVF.

  86. Stephanie Says:

I had the Essure done in September and I had severe bleeding and cramping and now I am 9 days late for my period. I just want to know if it is from the depo shot or if there is a chance I could be pregnant??

  87. Charles Monteith MD Says:

Either cause could be correct. You should take a pregnancy test and talk with your doctor about other causes.

  88. latrella Says:

I have had the Essure since August of 06. In March 2009 I started having problem periods every two and half weeks with heavy flow bad cramps. i had an hsg test June 22 of 09 confirmed both tubes are not blocked and one is in my uterus the other not visible. So now they given me birth control to take. Would I have to have an hysto? What are my chances conceiving once they are removed?

  89. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Latrella
I can not fully answer your question- but if one tube is open you can always get pregnant. If one coil is fully blocking the other tube you could always have an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy.

  90. Cindy in Minneapolis Says:

I had Essure at the end of June this year, thinking I would never want to have children. After 17 years, the love of my life is back in my life and I’m kicking around the idea of IVF so we can have a child (or two). I figure for the cost of reversing the Essure, which is not a guarantee of pregnancy, I thought I would go ahead and do IVF and maybe pay a little more but have a better chance since my “factory” as the OB/GYN put it looked good to him. Has anyone else had luck with IVF??

I’m also sorry to see all these women reporting a decreased sex drive. I have the sex drive of a 19-year-old boy now, wanting it all the time and the minute I am satisfied, I am ready to keep going. I had an active enough sex life before and at times, it seems as though my hormones have just quadrupled and it takes over with an unquenchable desire. Crazy!

  91. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Cindy
Thanks for your comment and thankfully there are options available for women and couples to choose.

IVF: Average success is 35% and success does decrease with age. Many IVF providers recommend donor eggs in patients over the age of 40. IVF costs between $10-15,000 for each try and if donor eggs are used the costs is much higher. IVF does have well recognized risks (multiples) and also less well recognized IVF risks.

Essure reversal requires a tubal implantation. Average pregnancy success is about 50% at our center. Success also decreases with age. The main risks are the risk of ectopic pregnancy and the likely need for a c-section for delivery of any pregnancy. Tubal implantation at our center costs between $6,500-$6,900 dollars depending on the surgeon you choose and the method and time by which you pay for the surgery.

  92. Bonna Says:

I have four children under c-section, I decided after my forth child to have laparoscopy procedure (tubal ligation), now age 11 years old, I divorce and married again, my husband has no kids and would like me to open my previous ligation and have one kid? Is it possible to reverse my tubal ligation and any chance of conceiving again? What are the disadvantages (risks of tubal reversal) of doing it? Please advise

    Bonna from Malaysia

  93. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Bonna
Tubal reversal surgery allows you the chance of becoming naturally pregnant. The chances of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal are approximately 70%.
The main risk of tubal reversal is that some couples may not become pregnant after reversal surgery.

The alternative treatment, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has risks as well. Please read our blog article which outlines IVF risks.

  94. Heather Says:

Will Essure reversal work on someone who has had two c-sections, or will the uterus become too scarred after the reversal? Did my uterus become more scarred when I had the Essure procedure done?

  95. Dr. Berger Says:

HEATHER – Having had 2 c-sections will not affect the chances of becoming pregnant after Essure reversal.

  96. Melannie Says:

I had the Essure procedure done in Sept of 2006 and I love the fact that I can’t get pregnant. I do have some cramping with my periods but not much. My breasts still get sore too and my sex drive is great. What are all these people complaining for??? If you have gained weight or now have a low sex drive there is something else going on, talk to your Dr. They tell you that women can still get pregnant but it is very rare. Nothing is a 100%

    No regrets here.

  97. Laura Says:

I had the Essure procedure on Nov 11 2009 and the confirmation test Mar 4 2010. No pain during either procedure, just a little cramping – no pain after. All was great. Because of previous chemotherapy I was not having regular periods. Have not had one since Sept 2009. I had a bad fall last week and 2 days later I am bleeding. Could the essure inserts have become dislodged?

  98. Dr. Berger Says:

Laura – It is unlikely that the Essure devices would become dislodged, but if you have a question about it you can have an HSG to find out.

  99. Tubes Unblocked After Essure Reversal Says:

  100. j harris Says:

I had the Essure placed in February of 2010. I have yet to be checked to see if it is blocked and I am not scheduled to find out until the end of April. I’m the mean time I have had an injection of the depoprovera. What I’m wondering is now every time me and my spouse have sex, I always bleed when its over. Is this a side effect? or is it just because I so recently had it done?

  101. Charles Monteith MD Says:

This is a common side effect of depoprovera. You should discuss with your doctor to make sure nothing else is the cause.

  102. Dawn Says:

I found out yesterday that I am pregnant after Essure done about a year ago. OMG I am ok to welcome another into our family, but this is totally unexpected. I want my money back!!!!!

  103. Angela B. Says:

Reading all of this gave me goosebumps. My doctor is Dr. Berger but both of these doctors have definitely been given a gift from God.

  104. WannaBeAMommyAgain Says:

I have two beautiful children, but my fiance and I truly would like to have a baby together. He already has one child. The information that I have received today has given me hope. We plan to make a visit in the next year or so to get the ball rolling. Essure reversal…Here We Come!! :-)

  105. Jaime Says:

I have had the essure for a year and since I have been having heart palpations, heavy periods, severe headaches with no relief, night sweats, flushing and heavy sweating during the day, mood swings, unable to sleep, fatigue, and high blood pressure that requires medication twice a day. I have not ever experienced these problems before essure. I have talked to the doctor that performed the procedure and he will not remove the essure. He did not test for an allergy to nickle. What should I do? I have already tried talking to him about removal and he kicked me out of his office.

  106. Dr. Berger Says:

Jaime – We can remove Essure devices at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

  107. Hopeful Says:

I am 38 years old an had the Essure procedure done a little more than a year ago. I have had no ill side effects from the procedure. I have since then connected again with my first true love. We both have children already but really want to have one together. He has had a vasectomy. Is it possible and what are the risks of doing IVF? The cost of doing reversals on both of us are too great for us to consider based upon the risks that are already involved (our age and my Type 1 diabetes). We want to try at least one time. Is it possible?

  108. Dr. Berger Says:

Hopeful – Essure reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center costs less than IVF and has the advantage of removing the Essure devices rather than leaving them in place. If they are left in, part of the device protrudes into the uterine cavity and can post an increased risk of pregnancy loss.

  109. Kairi Says:

I am so glad I came across this site. I currently have an IUD which I want to get removed. Since I don’t want any more children I was considering tubal litigation. My doctor recommended Essure but after reading all the comments and the side effects I decided not to do it. Part of the reason I want my IUD removed is that I think it is causing me lower back pain and also pain during intercourse and diminished sex drive. Idea of having another foreign body inserted in me does not thrill me. I guess SNIP-SNIP it is for my husband!!!

  110. Cookie Says:

I had the essure a year ago, and I’m thinking about having another baby, what would be the best thing to try IVF or tubal surgery?

  111. Dr. Berger Says:

Cookie – In general, tubal reversal has a higher pregnancy rate than IVF. In the particular case of Essure reversal, tubal surgery also has the benefit of removing the metal coils that otherwise protrude into the uterine cavity.

  112. Anonymous Says:

    Saddie,
I had Essure done in April of 09 and I love it. No side effects, easy fast healing, and a consistent period. You always hear the negatives, but I’m here to report the positives.

  113. Angela Says:

I got the Essure done last year an was wondering if there are any clinics in Florida that i can go to, to get the reversal surgery done?

  114. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Angela
Essure reversal is a very specialized procedure. I am doubtful you will find any Essure reversal specialists in Florida.

  115. kali Says:

I had the essure done in April 2009. My doctor’s office insisted they would contact me to schedule the x ray to determine if the tubes were blocked. They never did so I blew it off and 2 months ago I had a very heavy period for 3 days followed by spotting of “old” blood lasting a week then stopping a few days and starting again. This has been consistent. Breast tenderness and no cramping. I have not taken a pregnancy test but I am hoping these are just side effects. Anyone experienced this as well?

  116. Gerren Says:

I had my essure procedure done on Tuesday in the doctor’s office with minimal medication and no anesthesia. It took maybe 10 minutes, I felt a little pain/discomfort during the process, lot of bleeding but then 2 days of spotting and nothing else. I am scheduled for a follow up visit next week and will be asking a lot of questions that I did not ask prior to the procedure. My main goal was to stop having heavy bleeding during my menstrual cycle and I am not all together sure how my doctor figured that I needed this procedure in order to have an ablation later which will in fact minimize or stop my period all together. After reading these forums I am afraid to move around because I keep thinking that the coils will slip and poke something.

  117. Charles Monteith MD Says:

The coils will not move or slip. Your doctor likely recommended this so you would not get pregnant after the endometrial ablation.

  118. T Says:

I just had the Essure procedure done three months ago and I regret it. My body aches and headaches have been consistent since a month after I had it done. Is there any where in GA I can go to get them removed? Will it be easy since it’s only been three months? Any suggestions…please help!

  119. Dr. Berger Says:

T – Reversing an Essure sterilization is a highly specialized procedure. There are few physicians in the world who can do this. The best suggestion is to come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, where Essure reversals are being done successfully. Call (919) 968-4656 for a free consultation with a Tubal Reversal Nurse about this!

  121. Melissa mom of 3 girls Says:

Hi all. I had my third baby 6/12/09. I figured we were done having babies. which we are. My story is different. we do not want to change our minds. I am 30 years old, my husband going on 36. I thought this route would help with lighter periods. I am wrong. My normal even after the baby was 6 months old was 7 days only heavy for the 3rd to 5th day. It was clock work. I had the Essure placed Nov. 8, 2009. I have had abnormal periods, I will bleed for 1 or 2 weeks then off one week then have another period a week later lasting 17 days. I will do this over and over for the past year, anyone else doing this, or similar? The doctor said it is normal. I have been on birth control pills for 4 months and i have this same pattern even on pills, what the heck! i do not understand. I had a high sex drive up till this, and now I do not want it at all. It is hindering my marriage. I live on a military installation and doubt they are going to reverse me. I contacted tricare who is my insurance provider, they said they will pay for the reversal. I guess since I am having issues with this. Dr. Berger anything you can say advice wise or anything? I am curious, and have no answers to what is going on with me. Any for starters to help? Please, I am going crazy over here at Fort Bliss. busheyfamily7480@gmail.com

  122. Melissa mom of 3 girls Says:

Yea, I forgot my first comment I was clock work period for 7 days, and every 28th day. I could even tell you the time of day I should start. I knew from being on the Patch and Mirena for 6 years i went back to my normal schedule. I have always even on birth control suffered from heavy and painful menstrual cycles. The doctors had been trying to figure out what is wrong with me for years, but nothing so far they have tested for other than cystic fibroids. I believe it to be endometriosis, but never had the tests to confirm this. Since having the Essure I am always having to use a heating pad for comfort and my doctor has prescribed me 800mg Motrin for the pain for the past year. I do not know what to do anymore. I am sick of constantly bleeding. I was so lethargic the GYN did not check my Iron levels, but prescribed me Iron pills due to the lethargy. Then I all of a sudden had lost my sex drive. I do not have the urge. I am constantly in a mood. If I stop taking my birth control pills which there was a break in the pills I bled all the time. It never stopped. There was no week off. I had a period all the time that was for 2 months, i went back onto the pills and its 1 week off then 2 weeks on. I had one time recent there was 3 weeks between then i lasted 17 days then off for 1 week then having another one, it started up for 4 days and stopped for 2 days coming again for 3 days off again. It has been like this for the past 2 months. I do not know what to do. I feel inhuman and uncontrollable.Nothing I do is helping! ADVICE!!

  123. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Melissa
Your medical problems seem very involved. I do not think it is fair to offer you advice based on limited knowledge of your medical history. I would advise you discuss this with your doctor and if you desire Essure coil removal then we can do this for you.
The Essure removal surgery can be done one of two ways. The coils can be removed and the tubes can be repaired so pregnancy is possible. Alternatively the coils can be removed and the tubes can be left closed so pregnancy does not occur.

  124. TT Says:

I had the essure procedure done in 10/09. I have not had any major side effects from it. I have had minor cramping and longer periods. I am somewhat different due to me being morbidly obese. I desired not to have children but now I am considering a reversal. What factor does weight play in the reversal if any. I have 3 healthy children with few complications during my pregnancies.

  125. Charles Monteith MD Says:

The Essure can be reversed and approximately 50% of patient will become pregnant. To have a reversal at our center your BMI has to be below 35.

  126. Amanda Says:

I had the Essure procedure done in December 2005. Like everyone else I didn’t think I wanted anymore kids. Well, I now am newly married and want a new baby to add to the family, so I can give my hubby a baby of his own. So my question is after 5 years of this terrible procedure for many reasons will it be any harder or any easier to get it removed. I have been regretting this since the first 6 months. Heavy periods cramping etc. etc. So I was hoping after 5 years if it would be any harder or easier. I wish these bad boys would just fall out!

  127. Dr. Berger Says:

Amanda – It is no harder to reverse Essure sterilization after 5 years than after 1 or 2 years. We will be happy to reverse the Essure sterilization for you. Call (919) 968-4656 if you would like to speak with a tubal reversal nurse about this.

  128. Tiunte Finley Says:

I’m a mother of three healthy children. What is the cost of reversing the Essure procedure. Also where can I get it done.

  129. Dr. Berger Says:

Tiunte Finley – The standard cost of reversing Essure is $6900 for Dr. Berger or $6400 for Dr. Monteith. Call (919) 968-4656 to see if there are any special discount offers right now. You can have your Essure reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

  131. Angie Says:

I had the Essure procedure done over 6 years ago. I’m almost 36, healthy & really want one or two more children with my husband to be. Is this possible? What are the odds after having the coils in for so long?? I called and spoke to a very nice nurse about this. I would like to know which doctor to schedule a reversal with and when we can start the process!

  132. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Angie

It is possible to reverse Essure with a tubouterine implantation procedure. The pregnancy rate is about 50% with this type of reversal. You can start the process whenever you are ready by calling (919) 968-4656. You can schedule your reversal with either myself or Dr. Berger.

  133. Clarissa Taylor Says:

I had the Essure procedure done in 2007 my question is how long after the Essure reversal is done how long does your tubes remain open will your period be monthly. Or will it be the same way. Also it seems that my sex drive is not what it used to be I’m 32 I feel my hormones is going off the chart I have mood swings I have yet to experience hot flashes I think I have at this point, another question by having this essure and your periods are not normal when will you know when you are going through menopause. These are things I didn’t think about before I got this Essure.

  134. Dr. Berger Says:

Clarissa Taylor – You tubes should remain open after Essure Reversal and your periods should be monthly.

  135. Anonymous Says:

My friend had essure done a year and a half ago and she just found out that she is 3 months pregnant. Doctors say she is the first case in the US. Is this true?

  136. Dr. Berger Says:

There have been other Essure failures reported previously. Every sterilization method has some failures.

  137. Brad Says:

After a difficult pregnancy, my wife had the essure procedure done in August and a depo shot to cover the waiting period. She has completely lost her sex drive since then and we are wondering if any other women with a similar experience and outcome can offer us any advice or idea as to what to expect for the future. Will her sex drive return? For the doctors, I think you should include a warning in the pre-procedure information to patients that they may lose their sex drive and desire for intimate relationships. We would never have had this particular procedure done if we knew this was a possible outcome. We used to enjoy intimacy a great deal, now our relationship is beginning to suffer because I want intimacy and she doesn’t. She’s tried a few different medications that her doctor thought would help with her energy and desire but none have helped at all. Is there any positive news?! Other then, of course, that we don’t have to worry about getting pregnant…..but at this stage we don’t need a contraceptive for that, we’re all but celibate.

  138. Shannon Says:

Hi, I have had essure for about 3 years now. I am having problems that I feel are due to the essure, problems are(lots of discharge, burns at times feels like you have some kind of infection. I have been checked for everything, I have no infection.I got to where I could not have intercourse with my husband much as I would feel pain. Also felt like something was on my bladder and I always had to use the restroom.I am seeing a urinologist at this time he sent me to have a cat scan, He is prescibing me elmiron for ic the reasons for ic are not known. He did not give me a test to see if I have it but I have all the symptoms. So far the med. is working, I went to see him the other day and talked to him about the essure I have inside of me, he told me he could not tell me for sure, but it could be a possibility that it was causing my problems, due to elmiron helps inflammation inside of you.He also showed me my ct on his computer and showed me my essure implants.
I have found a web site with many others having the same problems and we all have essure. I am 31 years old, 5ft1,about 100 pounds, I have four kids, I want these things out of me but I do not want to get pregant. Can you please help me? What would be the best procedure for me.

  139. Dr. Berger Says:

Shannon – We can remove the Essure devices but not perform tubouterine implantation. That way, you would not get pregnant in the future but would have the Essure coils out. If you want to have this done, please speak with one of our nurse’s at (919) 968-4656.

  140. jajmomma Says:

I have had the essure device for almost three yearns no real problems. But I am now having hot flashes and craving OJ and wanting to sleep on my stomach which I never due. Is there any chance I could be prego after all this time? Also I have a lot of pain in my left side of my pelvic area.

  141. Dr. Berger Says:

Jajmomma – You could run a home pregnancy test and also contact your gyn doctor to evaluate the cause of your pain.

  142. coloradochick Says:

Wondering if anyone has had constant spotting and long periods after having the Essure procedure. I had it done 1.5 years ago and not liking any of the recommendations I’m getting from my doctor who gave me a diagnosis of some condition then admitted I really didn’t fit the criteria of that diagnosis. My guess is that it is from the Essure since I never had any issues like this beforehand. I’m not looking to get pregnant again but considering having the Essure reversed in hopes of getting my body back to “normal”.

  143. Deb Says:

    Coloradochick,

You are among many women who are having the spotting and long periods that you are describing. From what I have been reading most physicians will tell you:

Essure will not cause the long periods and spotting.
Essure is not reversible. Both Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have proven otherwise.

There are many women looking to have the Essure procedure reversed just to get back to “normal” and not to have more children.

Most women that are having an issue will also complain of being exhausted and drained as well as just not feeling right.

Some other symptoms that women are experiencing are:
Irregular periods, unexplained skin rashes, sharp stabbing pains where the coils are, uncomfortable intercourse, no sex drive, muscle aches and pains and an overall fatigue that cannot be shaken.

Many women have gone for test after test with all tests coming back within normal limits. There are numerous women who are demanding the coils be taken out and receiving the answer that it is just not possible without a full hysterectomy and a long recovery period.

I believe that as time goes on we will see more and more women coming forward to have the Essure reversal procedure.

  144. sharon Says:

Just want it out. It’s been over 3 years and I regret ever getting the Essure. I wish my doctor had advised against it since I was 42 and my egg count had decreased anyway. I feel miserable having this implant inside of me. help

  145. Dr. Berger Says:

Sharon – Essure devices can be removed. Call (919) 968-4656 if you need assistance and a nurse can explain how Essure removal is done.

  146. Chastity Says:

I was wondering if there is any doctors in the Illinsoi that does the tubal reversal sergery?

  147. Dr. Berger Says:

Chastity – There may be some doctors in Illinois who will perform a tubal ligation reversal, but not the way it is done at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. If you want the best possible outcome from the doctors with the best tubal reversal success rates, it is worth your while to come to Chapel Hill, NC to have your tubes untied. It is the only center devoted just to tubal reversal surgery. And it won’t cost any more, and likely will cost less, than if you have your ligation reversal done by less experienced doctors. Call (919) 968-4656 to speak with a Tubal Reversal Nurse for more information.

  148. Monica Says:

I had the tubal ligation procedure done in 2005 but I have recently decided to get remarried again. He has no children and I would like to give him at least two then have the procedure done again. So my question is can I have the tubal reversed to have some kids then them tied again and what are the side affects?

  149. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Monica
Tubal ligation is reversible and pregnancy is possible. We do the reversal as an outpatient surgery. The risk are minimal and most women do very well. You should call the office for more information. You can reach a nurse for a free consultation at (919) 968-4656.

  150. Tina Says:

Any doctors in Maine do this Essure sterilization reversal??

  151. Charles Monteith MD Says:

Essure reversal is very specialized and I am unaware of any doctors in Maine who perform this procedure.

  152. Steph Says:

I had the essure procedure done at age 19. I’m single and not sexually active. Also, I am high functioning autistic. I really would like to have children some day (after marriage of course :) ) But I do believe this procedure (which I was against) is going to hold me back because a select few in my family believe “fixing” me will only reduce the chance of having another autistic person in the family. I don’t know why. Everyone says I’ll be a good mom someday. Also, at the follow up after the procedure, I never had any test done on the status of my fertility. It’s almost three years and I still get my monthly periods and the occasional cervical mucus (which i thought would stop considering the docs TOLD me by word of mouth that i was sterile.) Right now is not the greatest time for me to get the tubes untied b/c i don’t have enough money (nor do i have a job and i’m still trying to get my own life figured out after all I’m still in college) But someday I hope so. Right now i’m uncertain.

  153. Lavon - Bahamas Says:

I had a tubal ligation done in 1998 and I am 40 years old. Based on the lenght of time since I had the procedure done and my age would I be a candidate for the reversal and what are the possible sid-effects?

  154. Dr. Berger Says:

Lavon- Bahamas: As long as you are having regular menstrual cycles, you are a candidate for tubal reversal surgery. There are no specific side-effects, but there is the possible increased risk associate with ectopic pregnancy. However, if you follow the early pregnancy monitoring protocol that we recommend, this risk is minimal.

  155. HBun Says:

I am a 41 yr old who had the essure done in 2008 and have had no problems. I have regular periods and have never felt better! I now want a baby! Had one child csection and my second VBAC! Now I really want a baby! Do you have a website with success stories of births after Essure reversal??? There is HOPE!!!

  156. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    HBun
We have a recent pregnancy after Essure and a birth after Essure. You can also read the testimonial of the first birth after Essure reversal.

My problem is now my son is 11 yrs old and would like to have another baby but not sure if it is worth going through all of the bleeding and problems I had before I had essure done. He is now left to be the last male in the family. We are military stationed at Ft Riley, can you please contact me to let us know if this is something that can be done, location and the cost of the procedure. I am 45 yrs old, with 3 children. All were healthy babies. My children are ages 5, 9 and 12 but have also realized I was pressured into having some form of sterilization that I now regret. I would love to be considered for your tubouterine implantation. What are some things that may cause someone to NOT be qualified for this procedure?

  163. Dr. Berger Says:

Lisa – If you are in good health and your body mass index (BMI) is less than 35, you are qualified for this procedure.

  169. Shina Says:

I had essure put in may 2008 and never had a period until a few months ago. Was wondering if you could help me with this. Don’t understand why I’m having one now?

  170. Dr. Berger Says:

Shina – The endometrial lining in the uterus may be regenerating. If you are concerned about this you should contact your local physician.

  171. Satisfied but would like it reversed Says:

My case is different I had the essure done in November 2008 and in addition to that I had the amblation done. Before that I was on the depo shot for 14 years. My husband and I divorced 2009 and I never thought I would ever think of having another baby. My baby is 16 years old. However, the man I am with has changed my mind after all these years. What is our options because my procedures were a little more permanent?

  172. Dr. Berger Says:

Satisfied – Endometrial ablation will be the issue preventing you from having another baby even through the Essure sterilization can be reversed.

  173. AntiSocialite Says:

I have experienced extreme hormonal issues and weight gain since my Essure procedure. At first I thought it was because of the pregnancy, but realized that I only gained 30 pounds with my last child, then lost all but 10 pounds after his birth. Recently I realized that I had my Essure procedure done right after his birth in 2007, and possibly the procedure could have attributed to the symptoms I am now experiencing. From the blogs I’ve been reading this seems to be a common side effect (excessive weight gain and hormone imbalance). Will the reversal procedure alleviate these negative symptoms? I don’t want any more children. I just want these coils out, and to feel normal again. It’s been over 4 years, I can’t stand feeling like I’m PMSing 24/7 anymore.

  174. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Antisocialite
Many women will get relief after reversal and we dont fully understand why. I am uncertain if you will lose your extra weight just from the Essure reversal.

  175. Babe - Urgent Says:

Please can Essure correct B hydrosalpinx ( a fallopian tube grossly dilated ). I did HSG recently and the results shows that my tubes are grossly dilated.

  176. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Babe-Urgent
Essure does not correct a hydrosalpinx. An ampullary salpingostomy if the surgical correction for hydrosalpinx. Essure blocks the tube and many IVF specialists believe it prevents fluid that could interfere with IVF from draining back into the uterus and interfering with the IVF process. They believe it makes IVF more successful. Think very carefully before you do this. If you are going to have IVF then it is a good decision. If you want tubal surgery to correct the swollen tubes then the Essure would not be a good idea. It really depends on which is more successful. IVF costs $10-12,000 for each cycle and each cycle has a 35% chance of success. Tubal surgery at our facility costs approximately $6000 and success of ampullary salpingostomy ranges from 20-50%.

  179. Jenny Says:

Which is more effective: tubal ligation or Essure procedure. My boyfriend and I are positively sure we do not want to have children and we want to have the most effective permanent birth control. He is not up for a vasectomy at this time. I just want to know what is top notch and not have to worry about getting pregnant.

  180. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jenny
Both are equally effective but vasectomy is just as effective and safer.

  181. Jenny Says:

In your professional opinion would you advise tubal ligation or Essure?

  182. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jenny
Tubal ligation with tubal clips is my advice.

  183. Jenny Says:

Can you get pregnant after having a partial hysterectomy?

  184. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jenny
If your uterus has been removed then you can not become pregnant.

  185. La Trina Garcia Says:

Hi i had the Essure procedure done March 2006 and every since then I have been having horrific pains every month. I have been put on many medication to relieve my horrible menstrual cramps to now i have been put on narcotics to get through my menstrual periods. I did not know that the doctors did this procedure on me. I only ask for a tubal ligation. Just recently here in Fort Hood Texas area I just found out that the doctors who did this procedure placed four of this coils in me and they are every where. Only one has been seen in my left tube and nothing in my right. I’m scheduled for a Cat Scan on Monday 10/17/11 to locate the other three. To make a long story short I am very miserable and is seeking help in getting rid of this madness out of me. My sex drive has decrease, in too much pain, and do not want to be taking narcotics for the rest of my life. I wish I never had those doctors touch me and then had to found out later what they did to me. My doctor Dr. Lobaugh is very good and has advised me of going to Dr. Berger to have this procedure undone after finding out where the other three coils are so that my husband and I can have another child. If I can have some one call or email me to provide me with information I would really appreciate it: sweetpea.garcia@gmail.com/254-317-5629

  188. Lorrie Says:

I had the Essure done in Oct. 2009 and had no problems ever. Only a little cramping when the doctor was putting them in. I also went back and they said it was 100% blocked. I have had no problems with my periods or back aches. My periods are still normal and the same time every month as they have always been. After reading this, I am worried that I could still get pregnant, but I know if I did it would be God’s doing and saying we need another child. We are happy with just our two boys and if it were to ever happen, we would love a third child just as much.

  189. Deeyaa Says:

I am asked for an essure. It is going to be a pre-IVF procedure.Currently I am having endometereosis and closed tubes with hydrosalphynxes for which IVF cycles may fail .So doctor recommended essure before IVF. Reading these articles I feel really worried. My queries : 1. If pregnency occurs thru IVF, displacement of these essure coils , can it harm the baby in the uterus.. as its a metal coil I am scared ? Anything fatal ?
    2. Later after baby delivery , can this coils be removed SAFELY without any damage inside?
    3. Is tubal ligation a better option than essure always ?
    Waiting for a response frnds.

  190. EMT COLE Says:

I am 28 yr old and three kids I recieved the essure in july 09 and have since had many signs and symptoms of being pregnant and after reading all the comments and answers on this page. I have gotten some of my answers because I have told my doctor about how sore my breast are and my sex drive has decreased and being 28 and a soon to be newlywed i believe my finace isnt very happy about that and i started to have milk discharge and my son was born in june 09 after numerous test they state everything is fine all test have come back normal but I went from a size 9 to a 16 and breast 36 c to 44 D my fiance isnt complaining because he would love to have another child so if the device isnt working we would like to just have it completly removed so i can return to normal and not feel like i am nine months pregnant and riding a emotional roller coaster everyday.

  191. Dr. Berger Says:
