Doctors’ Attitudes About Tubal Ligation Reversal

Many women who have had a tubal ligation find themselves considering tubal ligation reversal. We have patients who come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center from all areas of the United States, Europe and Asia for ligation reversal procedures. They come to have their tubes untied for a variety of reasons. Many patients have told us about the frustration they felt when talking to their ob/gyn doctors about tubal ligation reversal or to a reproductive specialist who recommended only in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Many patients have also said their doctors minimize their concerns about symptoms they developed after having their tubes tied.

We recently published a blog about why some doctors may have negative opinions regarding ligation reversal surgery: Why your doctor may be cold to the idea of tubal ligation reversal. We also went to our message board and asked our patients and prospective patients about personal experiences with their physicians when talking about ligation reversal surgery. There we found out that many doctors were very supportive of their patient’s desire to have reversal surgery. The responses can be read under the message board topic: Share your doctors’ attitudes about tubal ligation reversal. Please feel free to leave your story about your experience when seeking reversal surgery or your doctor’s attitude toward the surgery. To leave comments on the Tubal Reversal Doctors Blog, please register and then log in (right hand column). Alternatively, you can add posts to the message board topics shown above.

I think that this is wonderful information for women out there who are thinking about tubal reversal surgery. Being able to read other womens experiences will show them that they are not alone and that the most important thing that they can do is to listen to their heart. The physician’s at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center puts patients first by providing them with the most complete and accurate information out there.

  3. Jennifer Okun Says:

Thanks Dr. Monteith. I had a patient ask me this very question yesterday. It is great that patients and potential patients can find the answers to all their questions through our very informative and comprehensive website due to the dedication of our tubal reversal team.

  4. Stephanie Says:

It is very interesting for us to hear about doctor’s attitudes toward tubal reversal surgery. I think it is important for women to make educated and informed decisions about TR vs. IVF and to pursue the option they think is best for them. If you don’t have a supportive doctor or one that wishes to help you with your decision it may be best to look around for another that will be on board and help you achieve your dreams.

  5. Myrna White Says:

Good points Dr. Monteith, knowing that more and more women are interested in getting tubal reversals maybe tubal reversal surgery should be added to a Dr’s training.

  6. Sally, RN Says:

Like most things in life we tend to shy away from the things that we don’t feel experienced or comfortable with. I think that this is what happens to physicians who haven’t developed an expertise in an area like tubal reversal. This is one more reason that women shouldn’t settle for anyone but the best when it comes to their health care.

  7. Pamfmills Says:

It is amazing to hear from our patients how some of them have problems discussing options with their own doctors. Knowledge is power, thanks Dr B and Dr M!!

  8. Jan Says:

The internet has provided an excellent service for women seeking tubal reversal. Some areas do not have physicians who are informed or surgically trained to provide these services. Thankfully women are not limited to where they live to find excellent medical facilities. The internet is truly a doorway to many opportunities available. Thanks, Dr. Monteith.

  9. Kathy Says:

Tubal ligation reversal is a considerable option for women seeking to become pregnant again after tubal ligation. Choosing the option of tubal reversal over IVF comes from reading about the vast research and experience of our tubal reversal facility. A woman can now communicate with her doctor on choices for sterilization reversal.
