Tubal Ligation and Tubal Ligation Reversal
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure that blocks the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. Many people commonly refer to tubal sterilization as having their ‘tubes tied’. The more correct medical term is tubal occlusion (occluding or closing the tube), because not every fallopian tube is ligated or tied when it is closed. There are many different ways to perform a tubal ligation, but all the procedures cause some destruction of the fallopian tubes. There are many ways to perform a tubal ligation: tying and cutting, cauterizing (burning) and clipping or banding the fallopian tubes are the most common techniques.
Tubal Ligation: A Common Surgical Procedure
Tubal ligation is a very common surgical procedure in the United States. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention investigated surgical sterilization in 1995 and discovered 10.6 million women in the US had a tubal ligation procedure. Tubal ligation was twice as common as vasectomy. The study also found 1 out of 4 women desired a tubal ligation reversal at some point in their lives.
Tubal Ligation Reversal
A large number of women will regret their decision to have a tubal ligation and want to have another baby. According to the CDC study of 1995, more than 2.5 million women in the US will want to have their ‘tubes untied’. Many of these women are unaware that tubal ligation reversal exists, or they may be told that treatment by in vitro fertilization (IVF) is their only option. Most of these women will abandon hope of becoming pregnant again.
Untying Fallopian Tubes
Just as the expression of having the ‘fallopian tubes tied’ is commonly misused, the description of ‘untying your fallopian tubes’ has also become a frequently used, but inaccurate description of what actually occurs during tubal surgery to repair blocked tubes. More accurate terms for this type of surgery are tubal ligation reversal or tubal reversal. There are several ways to repair fallopian tubes after a sterilization procedure. Tubotubal anastamosis is the most common technique for performing tubal ligation reversal surgery. These illustrations show the method of tubotubal anastomosis (also called tubal anastomosis or tubal reanastomosis).
Tubal ligation involves closing the fallopian tubes by destroying a portion of the fallopian tube, which causes the tube to heal closed. Tubal ligation reversal involves opening and rejoining the closed ends of the fallopian tubes. This procedure is done under magnification using microsurgical techniques and is very successful in allowing women to become pregnant. I had a TL done in 2001. Since then I have been having issues with my flow. i bleed for about 2 weeks ,than off for 2 weeks. Sever cramps, moodiness, hair loss etc… I had a series of blood work done that proved to be all normal hormone levels. Currently I am taking the “Depo-Provera 150mg” IM injections. They are supposed to be administered Q3M. But I need them EVERY month or I start bleeding again. My next step might be a hysterectamy. Does this sound like PTLS?

I am a mother of 3 and after my daughter with a 10 year gap I was sure that I was done having children, but after recent thoughts, I am sure I would like to have more. I tied my tubes after my 3rd and would like so to have a few more gifts. I will try the reversal and see if we are blessed.

Thank you for your posts and for sharing your stories with us. The good news is that the doctors are able to repair the tubes in 98% of situations, regardless of the type of sterilization performed. The cost for surgery with Dr. Monteith is $4900 and the cost with Dr. Berger is $5900. These are all-inclusive fees! i have three beautiful teenage daughters,11,15,16. i became a very young mother to fast, but i believe i made the right decision at the time to have my girls, there my whole life. now at the age of 33, divorced at the age of 23, i had the banding done right in the middle of my divorce. he cheated, and i went through a period of time i wanted nothing to do with men. but, about a year and a half ago i believe to have meet the perfet man, he loves my girls as if they where his. he has no children and never been married, but he really would like to have a boy of his own, i have always wanted two or four children. i was the middle hild growing up and i hated it. i have two brothers. my girls have implied many times why or they would love to have a little brother or sister. my question for you is or how affordable is it? we have good jobs, i believe but not enough to have 6 to 8 grand sitting around in the bank. i really miss and love to b a mother. i melt when i see a new born. this is one of are dreams together as a family.
