i have recently had an xray on my lumbar spine, whilst having my xray the radiologist noted that there was metal in my stomach, further xray’s have shown up that one of my sterilisation clips has come off and migrated to my stomach,have i any cause to be concerned,i was sterilised in 1997, and have been having a lot of trouble with my stomach in recent years, or maybe this is just coincidental!

Thank so much for all your help. We were prepared to pay 100% out of pocket at this time. We were hoping that a local doctor would be able to help us and insurance would help with the cost. But I guess you get what you pay for. I would do anything to be able to schedule surgery with you tomorrow if I could. I will go ahead signed up for the payment plan option. Robyn – You could have your doctor remove the clips and later have them repaired here. But that will be 2 operations and you will lose more of each tube from the laparoscopic surgery. I think the better option is to leave them in place until you come here to have them removed and have your tubes repaired. Since you are dealing with the issue of pain, you could get an early opening in my surgical schedule. I will let the nurses know so that if you call to talk to one of them they will expedite your scheduling. You can call (919) 968-4656 and ask to speak with Sally, Jennifer, Meridith, or Julia. Any of them will be able to assist you.

It is likely that your doctor does not have experience in performing microsurgical tubal anastomosis, the technique we use to repair the tubes. The information he has given you is not correct – tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center costs less than half the average cost of a single IVF cycle and tubal reversal is more successful than IVF for most women.

I am 36 years old with 3 daughters ages 19, 18 & 13 and on my 2 (and LAST) marriage. I am not sure which clips I have but, about a year after my tubal in 2003. I started having sharp pains during my ovulation time. I finally found a doctor that is willing to remove the clips, well some what willing to. He doesn’t believe that the clips are the source of my pain so he is going to perform laparoscopy surgery in 2 days to see what’s going on and since we are insisting that he remove the clips, then he will do so. My insurance company is paying because it has been deemed medically necessary. My doctor is telling us that my tubes are no good and I will have to have IVF to have a baby. He says that it cost more to have the tubes reattached & repaired vs IVF and insurance companies won’t pay for either. That’s fine but since he’s removing them anyways and we want them reattached & repaired shouldn’t he so? As I was reading the pre-op paperwork last night I noticed that it states “laparoscopy, removal of clips from fallopian tubes”. I realized after reading it and recalling all our meetings that he is just removing the clips and has no plan to reattach the tubes. I am heartbroken. I am fully aware that they have to be cut out (thanks to all the up front and honest information that ya’ll provide on your website). But what happens to them if the clips have been just cut out without reattaching them? What then? Please help understand, or tell me what I need to say to my doctor or if I need to run. After reading your site front & back I feel like we are being short changed. We have told him many times that my husband has no children and we want to try maybe in the next year or so. We believe if it happens it happens we don’t want IVF and all that it comes with. Of course I would do anything to be able to seen by your practice but at this time we don’t have the money laying around but IF we have to we will start the payment plan with y’all but if you could provide any advice to help us understand or what to do next will be greatly appreciated.

I had my filshie clips put on after my 4th son Sep. 26 2005 Ive had alot of pain also. In August I had 2 periods and thats never happened before. I didnt have a period in September and now this is October and I still havent had one. So I went and got 2 pregnancy test because I do have symptoms of being pregnant both test were positive. Could it be possible that I am pregnant? Or could I just be getting false results? What should I do?

When you have clips a reversal is not only removing the clips but to suture the tubes back together and repair. Is this correct? I had my tubes clipped in 2009 and I am now regreting it. I am going to have them removed. My question to the doctors is exactly how are the clips removed? After so many complaints of pain after having the clips placed, how is it there are not studies to show this? How can these message boards have so many women, that have never met yet that have the same symptoms; Women that are of all ages, nationality and religious backgrounds but have only one thing in common, tubal ligation via clips?

I had the Filshie Clips put on during my c section in July 2010, since day one I have had sharp stabbing pains that radiate down the front of my legs as well as a persistent back ache. Like a lot of women I didn’t relate it to my tubal ligation, for the first 6 months I was told it was my body healing and forming scar tissue from the c section. I’ve never regretted my decision in having my tubes tied, I was comfortable with the 2 kids (boy and a girl) that I have, however I’ve not been satisfied with the severe pain and abnormal, beyond severe periods I have had since making that decision. In July of this year a family member (listening to my pain complaints) made comment that maybe my body doesn’t like the TL. So I decided to use the internet in search of what could be wrong. I typed in what I knew; “c section, tubal ligation post operative pain”…it was such a shock to find all these women with the same complaints!! After realizing the back pain, the sharp stabbing abdominal pains, chronic fatigue and painful periods were all connected, I began searching for a dr. in my area that would do a reversal for alleviating the pain…my complaints however have led to many theories of what the issue could be, none of which suggest or believe it to be related to the Filshie clips. Thus far both GYN have offered a hysterectomy as a solution. ( one wanted to take everything and leave the ovaries, the other wanted to take just the clips and the tubes) Being that I am against taking parts out for a resolution it instead has been suggested I receive pain shots (into the “aggravated nerve endings) and oral meds with nerve blocking abilities (like prozac or lyrica). Although I’ve told the dr. this too is unsatisfactory as a solution he still doesn’t believe my pain (the same exact pain that so many other women describe) is related to the Filshie clips. He’s offered to TAKE OUT NERVE ENDINGS he believes is the sole reason for the pain. I advise ANY woman thinking of getting Filshie clips or the likes to do her homework and think long and hard. My advice is that a savings account should be set up prior to the sterilization. That account should contain enough money for an out of pocket reversal and travel expenses if needed to get her to Chapel Hill because should she have pain or complications from the “wonderful” clips, her complaints will fall on deaf ears and will likely result in months, possibly years of pain while she searches for a dr. that believes her or is willing to do a reversal for pain elimination.

Hi!I was wondering,I had my TL in 2003 after a c-section with the Hulka Clips.I am having an issue with feeling something weird during intercourse.Like he is hitting something hard and sharp.I am having a hard time sitting up straight and keeping my legs closed.I can feel something.It actually burns a little.We just had intercourse and I could feel something inside of me,hard and sharp that he was hitting.It was sending sharp pains down my right leg and into my lower abdomen.My area down there feels weird just sitting up.When I went to the bathroom I had something in the toilet that was round and grey.another time I had something that was long and brownish.both was at the bottom.Yes I have had alot of problems since I had the clips put on.I have had alot of dizziness and passing out from day 1.Which led to seizures.My body could not take it anymore all the passing out.I have lost a lot due to it.Now I have diabetes,I had bad mood swings to the point of flipping tables and screaming,to crying,to laughing.to yelling,hitting my boyfriend all in minutes and I wouldnt have a clue from one to minute to the next.I am naturally a calm person,but after that I dont know what happened,kidney problems unexplained,I weighed 125 now I am 216 I was almost 300.I lost some weight.Please help me.I am lost,and very confused,dont like myself after doing this.

Mine failed me. I hate it when articles say they do not come off. Yes they do, I had them after a c-section in 07, became pregnant (loss) in 09, ectopic in 10 and am now 15 weeks pregnant. There are some failure rates that people should be made aware of.

Yanira – Filshie clips often can “migrate” away from the tube. This occurs after they have been closed tightly across the tube and eventually the tissue inside the clip becomes reabsorbed by the body. But the clip has separated the tube into 2 distinct parts so that conception will not occur. The only predictable way to become pregnant after Filshie clip sterilization, even when one clip has migrated away from the tube is through the tubal reversal procedure called tubotubal anastomosis (or just tubal anastomosis).

hi, i had my tubes clipped about 8yrs ago now & from 2 months after having them placed i have suffered really bad abdominal pain & pain in my right ovaries or fallopian tube, i get 1 week out of my cycle which is near on pain free then the rest of my cycle im in so much pain that it makes me sick, i don't eat for nearly three weeks & i dont sleep, my doctor has sent me for scan after scan, ive had internal scans as well but they can not find a reason for why i am in this pain, they tried me with a coil which did not work so they removed it & now i waiting to be opened up so they can find the reason for it, i know it is connected to having my tubes clipped, but it keeps falling on deaf ears, i am begging for them to remove them so i can prove i am right, i was only 27 when i had it done & healthy & now im 35 been rushed to hospital 8 times since, my relationship of 8yrs has ended due to my health, ive lost my job too because of the time ive had of, im seriously underweight, my kids wont come near me because im so bad tempered due to it & the lack of sleep due to pain & im so depressed, they have been looking for nearly 8yrs now for why im in so much pain & not found anything so why wont they believe that it might be because of the clips & just remove them, please help me i cant cope anymore

Hi, I had the tubal clips put in a year ago but at times during intercourse my partner says there is an uncomfortable feeling for him, which I would also agree with for myself. This happened the other day and after I have had bleeding and some abdominal discomfort, similar to period cramp, but my period is not due for at least another week. Is it at all possible this could be linked to the clips? Sorry this isn't a reversal question but this is by far the most informative site when to trying to get answers!

Rachel Tubal clips are very reversible and the chances of pregnancy after tubal reversal are good. The tubes and ovaries are separate structures. So one could have problems with the ovaries but have very normal and healthy fallopian tubes.

i had Filshie clips put in in 03, due to the fact that i had a boy and a girl and was not happy in my marriage. i left my alcoholic husband a month later. i was asked at the Hospital what if you leave your Husband and i just thought that if i left him i still wouldn’t want anymore children. That if i met someone else the chances of them having children in prev relationships was quite high as i was 32 yrs at the time.Low and behold i met someone in 04 and he didn’t have any children and he was an only child. In 06 we went down the IVF route because didn’t want any more after. i got pregnant straight away and have a beautiful little girl but would like to say that during all the hormone treatment my ovaries which by then were very scard at the beginning went even worse and eventually curled up and and were then difficult to find. So i dont think that mine would have been reversible!

Patty - Other women have reported continuing pain after Filshie clip sterilization. Removing the clips can relieve the pain. Studies do not show an increased risk of ovarian cancer after tubal ligation. In fact, the studies show a decreased risk of ovarian cancer among women who have had a tubal ligation.

I had Filshie Clips put on my tubes in 2000 and have had lower back pain, pinching pain, bad ovulation pain and crampy periods ever since (i was not on the pill before and had none of these).Sometimes it feels as if there is very little time without pain.I have been to a couple of Drs and they come up with nothing. I had an Ultrs-sound a couple of years ago which again showed nothing. My question is is there a higher risk of those who have had TL in getting Ovarian Cancer. The problem is we get similar symptoms but cannot be going to the Dr's every month and it could be missed.

I had my tubes clipped in nov.2005. I have had sharp pains on both my sides and ones that shoot down my legs, not to mention the bad cramps and back pain. My Doc’s never told me there would be pain. I have had very heavy bleeding and clots. And no mater what type of birth control pill i have been given my period is never regular. The doctors say oh it’s just a heavy flow but it feels like your bleeding to death. I have spoken to many women who have had this procedure done and we all have these problems. I would never recommend this procedure to anyone not even my worst enemy!!

You can see in Table 5 from our pregnancy follow-up study that the pregnancy rate after reversal of Hulka clips at age 30 is close to 90%. I have had a filshie clips placed on my tubes in Feb 2003, 3 months after my last child was born. I have had low back pain for years and gotten worse through the years too. Plus I have very heavy menstrual bleeding and feeling bloated and constipated 24/7 without relief regardless. My tubes feel likes it being squeezed when its close time for my periods. This does not feel normal at all. For the last 3 months I’m having severe low back pain with no relief. Right now I’m in Physical Therapy but its not helping. Could all this be because of the clips?

You should have a careful conversation with your doctor. When the reason for surgery is pain most doctors will only remove the clips but not repair the tubes. If your doctor only removes the clips you will not be able to become pregnant unless the tubes are rejoined. Most doctors will not rejoin the tube unless they have some experience with tubal reversal surgery.

I have several questions. I had the Filshie clip ligation done back in April of this year. It was a precaution because my blood levels were elevated and I had a mass in my uterus that had grown from 10% to 30% within 6 months. My doctor thought it was cancer and come to find out that it wasn't. It was after the surgery that we had the results of the biopsy. Now I am regretting getting my tubes tide. I wasn't done having children and my doctor suggested that it was best. Now what do I do?

Tubal clips are the best for reversing. Your medical condition is common and it is likely because you are not ovulating or releasing eggs. You should have your hormonal levels checked. Your doctor can easily give you a medication called clomid, which will help you ovulate.

I believe it is from getting my tubes tied…. i regret this so much…. especially after thinking on it i would love to have another child one day and my 5 yr old son keeps asking for a baby brother… The main thing is can it really be from getting my tubes tied these sharp unwanted pains???

I had the filshie clips put on approx. 2 years ago. Since then I have had constant pain in my lower right and left hand side below my navel and constant bloating. An ultrasound proved nothing was wrong. I then had bleeding in between my menstrual cycle. My gyno decided to do explorative surgery. It was found that the clips had caused massive adhesions and they were removed at once. Now three days after the surgery I have never felt better. To say the problem is rare I dont know after reading through the posts it seems to be a bit of a regular occurence???? Maybe more studies need to be conducted after all I now have been recommended to have a hysterectomy due to the damage that has been done.

As soon as the Hulka clips are removed you can try to become pregnant. Healing is a gradual process but the tubes should be mostly healed and reattached by 2 weeks after surgery.

I wanted to say thank you for taking Filshie clips out of as many women as possible! I had Filshies in 2002, in 2005 they came off on there own and went into my organs. During a surgery to repair the damage from the clips, the doctor cut a hole in my stomach and I became septic, was in a coma, and was very ill for several months and still over a year later have not fully recovered. I hope no other women ever have to go through what I did!

The clips work instantly to close the tube. The tissue dies and the tubes heal closed within several days. You would need the clips removed and a tubal reversal. Your chances of getting pregnant after tubal reversal would be excellent after reversal of tubal clips.

You will have to talk to your doctor about your symptoms. It would be inappropriate to give any comments about your symptoms because of such limited information.
You will likely not get pregnant since the clips have been removed because the tube clips cause the tubes to heal closed.

I had my tubal clips removed January of this year during an operation to remove an I.U.D. that had perforated my uterus and was stuck in my bowel lining. Now I am emotional and cranky, I bled for 3 weeks . Is this normal? They went through my abdomen so they didn’t touch my uterus. Also my doctor said he removed the clips because one was off and the other was only partially on and he said both tubes where in active and that I shouldn’t worry I only have 1/3000 chance of pregnancy. Finally after 4 years of complaining they went in and found out that the clips were giving me problems the only thing was that the clip on my right side wasn’t on my tube. They couldn’t find it after 45 minutes of looking. It was found later in an x ray near my spleen. Should I be concerned about it just floating around in there?

Insemination only puts sperm into your uterus. Since your tubes are blocked the sperm will never be able to reach the egg. IVF would allow you to have another child. IVF does have IVF risks. I agree with the ladies that complain about pain after the procedure with the Filshie Clips. I have regretted having the tubal ligation performed and I would never recommend this as a form of birth control. I had my clips placed on my tubes in March of 2006. I have had sharp pains also. Honestly I would not recommend anyone doing this precedure because in my opinion it causes pain. there arent alot of case studies done because alot of people dont relate the pain with the clips, but I have research it and so has my ob doctor and to make a long story short I am getting my clips removed on Oct 6 2009 due to medical complications. yes my insurance is covering the surgery. I will still be sterile because the tubes are damaged because of the clips but hopefully the pain will go away...
