Essure Tubal Reversals and Pregnancies
Posted On: Monday, October 19th, 2009
The reversal surgeons of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center specialize in corrective tubal surgery. We have dedicated our practice to tubal repair for blocked fallopian tubes and reversal of tubal ligations. Since 2000, we have performed over 8,000 tubal reversal procedures. We have recently begun to receive requests from women for Essure tubal reversals.
This article will provide some additional insights into reversal of Essure sterilization.
Essure Reversal
Reversal of Essure tubal ligation is possible. We have described both the Essure procedure and the reversal of Essure in two previous articles:
These articles explain how Essure works and how we perform Essure reversals.
Essure Reversal Requires Tubal Implantation
The Essure coils cause tubal blockage in the interstitial/isthmic portion of the tube.
The interstitial and isthmic sections are the narrowest portions of the fallopian tube as it travels through the muscular wall of the uterus. The Essure coils cause the formation of scar tissue that results in tubal closure.
Although the tubal closure is in a critical portion of the fallopian tube, the Essure procedure leaves a large part of the tube unaffected. The remaining portion of the fallopian tube outside of the uterus remains healthy and long after Essure tubal sterilization.
How Is Essure Reversal Done?
The Essure coils can be removed during the reversal procedure; however, simply removing the coils will not open the fallopian tube. The scar tissue caused by the Essure coils is permanent and must be bypassed. The procedure to bypass the tubal scar tissue is called tubouterine implantation.
We perform Essure reversals as outpatient surgery that take less than 90 minutes to perform. During the procedure, the Essure coils are removed to prevent possible complications with future pregnancies. A new opening is made into each side of the uterus and the healthy portion of the fallopian tube is then inserted into the new opening.
Pregnancy After Essure Tubal Reversal
Pregnancy is possible after reversing Essure sterilization. We have examined our pregnancy database of over 6,000 reversal patients and studied the pregnancy success rates of our patients. The pregnancy rate was 57% for women who had tubouterine implantation procedures .
Essure Reversal Or IVF: Which Is Better?
Pregnancy after the Essure procedure can be achieved by Essure reversal or IVF. Many couples ask which is the better choice. Each couple will need to decide for themselves which approach is better for them. We have devoted several previous articles to inform readers about the benefits and risks of IVF:
In 2006, the national IVF success rate for non-donor, fresh egg IVF was 35% for each IVF cycle attempted. Patients who underwent tubouterine implantation at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center had a pregnancy success rate of 57%. Tubouterine implantation pregnancy success rate at our center provides higher pregnancy success rates than a single cycle of IVF.
Essure Reversal Costs
Essure reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center costs between $6,500 to $6,900. Patients having Essure reversal at our center have a 90 minute outpatient surgical procedure. They stay overnight in a local hotel and can return home the morning after surgery after their postoperative visit. They can usually return to work in 7-10 days after their procedure. If the tubouterine procedure is successful then patients have the opportunity to become pregnant more than once. The main risk of any tubal surgery is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. The risks associated with ectopic pregnancy can be minimized by following our early pregnancy monitoring protocol.
For comparison, IVF costs an average of $10,000 to $15,000 for each treatment cycle. IVF involves many visits to the physician, multiple injections with hormonal medications, and possible ethical and medical concerns should a multiple gestation pregnancy occur.

It has taken me a longtime to log on and share my journey. But I am very glad that I had the Tubal Reversal now as my body is getting back to normal before my tubal ligation. Before I experienced everything from pain, to low sex drive, to major mood swings, and long lasting menstrual cycles. Sine my reversal surgery 3/20/09 my cycles are back to normal 3-5 days tops, the pain is minimal if at all, and all is working very well. My only stress is I wanted to be pregnant by now, but that is just me dealing with my lack of patience. But I have to say to everyone at Chapel Hill Surgical Center me and my fiance experience was great. We even talked about moving to Chapel Hill as we were treated so very well, and enjoyed the scenery. I just wanted to say thanks to Dr Berger for all he does in the field of work. As you may have heard it many times over, Thank you. I believe your practice is blessed because you bless so many. So hopefully next sometime I can be telling everyone about our new addition that you through your passion for fertility have given to us. This was the best medical experience I have ever had!!!

I had a reversal tubal but my right tube has scar tissue. I have had a tubal ligation 2 times already. Because of my scar tissue it’s only open a little. What is there that I can do?

A common cause of blocked tubes is scar tissue. Tubal surgery for blocked tubes can be helpful, but after 2 tubal ligations, IVF may be your better option.

Great information. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have given hope to people who have been told there is no hope.
Thank you!

Hi, I am a thirty-one year old female that has two children from my first marriage. After we separated I did not want anymore children. Now I am attending nursing school and I have meet someone new and we are getting married. He also wants another child because he only have one and she is fourteen. He wants me to have a procedure done so we can have a child after we are married. I have been looking on the internet and I have heard ivf works. Now that I have came to you site it shows me that a essure can be reversed because I have been thinking for a long time it could not be. I have called Essure to see what could I have done to reverse it.

EVELYN – The manufacturer of Essure apparently is unaware that Essure reversal is possible. We do this with the technique of tubal implantation after removing the device from the fallopian tube.

I had a daughter in Sep of 2009, I told myself that she was my last baby, so I went into sugery a few months after she was born, After I got the surgery, my baby passed away a few weeks after. I now want another child because I miss her so much. I got the essure and I have no idea where to go from here. I don’t really have the money for any procedures, I do have insurance but I don’t think they will pay for essure reversal. Could some one give me advice?

I had the Essure procedure performed 10/06, and was fortunate to have it reversed by Dr. Berger in November of 2009.
As a physician, I was impressed with not only Dr. Berger, but also his staff. The entire team was wonderful. It started the day I called to inquire about the procedure, and was told that it would take Dr Berger just over an hour to complete. The other facility in my region ( I live in the Carolinas, just a few hours in-between two centers where these reversals are taking place) that advertised Essure reversal informed me that I would be under anesthesia for about five hours- which was not attractive to me at all (more time under anesthesia equals longer post-op recovery and also increases risks of complications, etc). So, I was impressed from the minute I called and began my inquiry. The high degree of professionalism and attention to details which continued from pre- to post-operation continued. I left Chapel Hill knowing I made the best choice in a facility and surgeon I possibly could have, and I thank God that he was so close by (about a three hour drive for me).
I have not become pregnant yet, but I am confident that is because my husband & I have been actively trying not to conceive. We are waiting a few more month to start trying. As my tube lengths after the Essure procedure were 8 and 10 cm, I feel confident that when the time is right, God willing, we will have no problems with conception.
Initially I sought the Essure reversal only for the sake of reversing all of the side effects I was experiencing from the Essure implants. There were numerous problems, which all started slowly but gradually became worse and worse: irregular menses, horrible cramps with extended nausea, empty mood, fatigue… all markedly different from prior to the Essure procedure. I was thrilled when I learned it could be reversed.
Today, I am so glad it be feeling 90% better, as far as the (PTLS) symptoms go, they are virtually gone. And my husband and I are considering trying to conceive now, so perhaps I will be writing again within the next year or so, informing Dr Berger of an Essure reversal baby! Regardless of what the future holds, I am so glad I had the procedure reversed. I feel much, much better. I would recommend it to anyone considering Essure reversal. Specifically, I would tell you to consider the Chapel Hill facility, I have no regrets.

I had my ligation reversal surgery with Dr. Berger September 22, 2010, and I can honestly say after having my Essure Reversal I feel 100% better. I am one of the exceptions where my husband and I didn’t come here for fertility. I was having horrible pain in the right side and we thought I was having appendicitis or gallbladder issues. Needless to say the scarring was so bad on my right side that after Dr. Berger performed my surgery it made a world of a difference. Now since my surgery and I am feeling great my husband and I are trying now and hope this isn’t a long process. I want other women out there to have hope that your life can change and if you are having problems with your Essure both of these Dr.’s can perform your reversal and you will be in the best hands. I feel like I was truly with the best Dr. I could have picked for my situation. Thank you again Dr. Berger and your Staff for ALL you have done. They treated me like family and I am happy to be able to say they were brought into a part of my world for a day. Thank you again.

Do you know of any doctors in Tennessee that do the Essure Reversal? I have tried contacting a few in our city (Knoxville) but have had no luck so far. I keep getting the answer, “Essure is not reversable.” I actually broke out in tears after finding your website that Essure IS reversable! I, like so many of the other women, have experienced many of the same symptoms after having the Essure procedure done in 2007.

There are no doctors in Tennessee that I know of who perform Essure reversals. You are welcome to come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for this procedure, and women travel here from all over the US to have their Essure reversed.

I am in the process of getting everything together to have the surgery at Chapel Hill. The doctor that performed my Essure procedure has moved out of state so I am getting my reports from the hospital where he performed the surgery. Do you do surgeries only on weekdays or do you do them on weekends as well?

Jena
We frequently perform Essure reversal. Our surgeries are during the weekdays only.

I have had a tubal reversal and I am 43. I have not had success in tracking my ovulation and have had some cysts. Do you have any advise for me to be more successful at this? I have only the left tube open. Thanks…K

I dont understand “have not had success in tracking my ovulation”. Either you are not ovulating and you should see your doctor for clomid….or you are having trouble confirming the test and your doctor can do blood test to help see if you ovulate.
