Idaho Tubal Reversal Angels: Jaime and Kraig

tubal reversal angel family before tubal reversal surgeryTwo tubal reversal angels graced the staff of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center in February 2009. Jamie and Kraig traveled from Caldwell, Idaho (ID) to have Jamie’s tubes untied.

We asked them if they would share their story with our  readers and they agreed.

Tubal Reversal Angels: Background

Jamie is 31 years old and a high school teacher. She teaches both science and art and has the challenging job of directing high school adolescents. Her husband Kraig is 33 and he is the manager of a cemetery. They are proud parents of two children. Their first child, Kale, was four years old when their second child, Kohl, was born in November of 2008. Kohl was born just three days before Thanksgiving.

Tubal Ligation History

When Jamie was pregnant with Kohl, she and Kraig decided they would be done with having children after her pregnancy.

According to Jamie, “We had two children- one for each of us! We were done.” As a high school teacher, Jamie had experience with teenage children who were sometimes difficult, challenging, and the products of broken homes. She had observed many families who were pushed to the limits while under the stress of providing and taking care of large families. As a result of her experience, Jamie felt two children were enough for her and Kraig. She decided she would have a tubal ligation with her second C-section.

Jamie went into labor several days before her planned cesarean. She had a repeat c-section and delivered a healthy baby boy. At Jamie’s request, her obstetrician performed a Filshie clip tubal ligation.

After Tubal Ligation Consequences: Tragedy

Their quest for tubal ligation reversal began in December of 2008 with the unexpected and tragic death of their one-month-old child. Their youngest son, Kohl, had become ill the first month after birth.

Tubal reversal allows natural conception after surgery.Jamie’s instinct was that her child was sick and not doing well. When Kohl was not feeding properly, Jamie took him to two different pediatricians on four separate occasions over the course of two weeks. They found no serious abnormality with her newborn infant.

Eventually, Kohl became worse and they took him to the local emergency room. Several days before Christmas – and within 2 hours of arriving in the emergency room – baby Angel Kohl was pronounced dead as a result of viral pneumonia.

Reversal of Tubal Ligation

After her tubal ligation and within two months their unexpected loss of Kohl, Jamie and Kraig traveled to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for reversal of tubal ligation. Jamie chose to have her reversal surgery performed by Dr. Berger. The couple met with Dr. Berger the day before surgery. Jamie’s tubal reversal occurred the next day and she underwent a successful bilateral tubal anastamosis. Her tubal clips were removed and her tubal lengths were 9 and 8 cm. The entire tubal ligation reversal operation lasted 58 minutes.

After Tubal Reversal Surgery: Hope

Angels lead the way for this family after tubal reversal surgery. After her tubal reversal surgery, Jamie did well in the recovery room. She and Kraig returned to the hotel where she rested for the remainder of the day. The day after surgery she was evaluated by a member of our nursing staff and was found to be comfortable and without significant problems after tubal reversal surgery.

She and Kraig left for Idaho with the hope of restored fertility, a hope also shared by all of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center staff.

Pregnancy After Tube Reversal

Miracle pregnancies after tube reversal do occur. Jamie reported that she was pregnant only eight weeks after her tubal reversal operation! So within 4 months of the death of her newborn son and within 2 months after her tubal reversal, Jamie was pregnant again. Her pregnancy is going well and she has been blessed with a baby girl. Jaime is due just before Christmas this year. Her due date is exactly the same date – 12 months from the day – that her son Kohl passed away!

This is why Jaime and Kohl are tubal reversal angels. We are happy that miracle pregnancies do occur after tube reversal.

To be continued shortly after Christmas of 2009…

Comment By Dr. Monteith

With sincere gratitude, I would like to thank Jamie and Kraig for sharing their story with us.  Jamie volunteered her story before her tubal reversal procedure and before she knew if she would ever become pregnant again. It is never easy to experience the pain of losing a newborn child or to share the experience for the benefit of others.

Unfortunately, there are many more couples who endure similar experiences while feeling despair and isolation.  I think the sharing of these experiences lets those who have suffered losses understand they are not alone and the remainder of us realize how fortunate we really are.
