Hi I am 46 now and I had my first baby with 38 and the second with 41 and the third with 42. My doctor in Germany tied the tubes by burning and cutting some off.I did that because of all the pressure from outside who said I am to old ect..because of all the negative things that can happen with the baby ect. But now I am thinking I really would like to have a last child. So what is the best advice to do.? IVT or reversal tubal ligation? Gina – If you are having regular menstrual cycles, it is not too late for have a tubal ligation reversal. The risk of miscarriage increases with age, so the sooner you have the reversal procedure, the more likely it will be to allow you to have a child.

You would be a good candidate for tubal reversal. You should consider having the tubal reversal before the age of 43 so that you can have the best chance of becoming pregnant.

You would be a good candidate for tubal reversal. I advise you have it done as soon as possible and not wait too long. In general about 70% of our patients get pregnant after reversal and after the age of 40 about 30% of patients become pregnant. The surgery is very safe but the main risk of tubal reversal is ectopic pregnancy. If you follow our early pregnancy monitoring protocol ectopic pregnancies can be easily diagnosed and treated early.

I am 40 soon to be 41. I have 5 kids - my last one in 2004 when I had my tubes tied. I don't know how the surgery was done since I didn't know there was a difference at the time. I am getting remarried to a man who is younger than me and we would like to at least have one child together. I have Chrons and rheumetoid arthrtis and gout. I would like to have my tubal reversed, but am not sure what the health risks in conjunction with those diseases would be? I am very healthy otherwise and only go on bouts with them sometimes. I still have regular periods and don't see anything that would mean I have signs of menopause. So you think that my chances are still good at becoming pregnant? I was very fertile before the tubal. Most tubal ligations can be reversed and pregnancy can happen with only one tube. You would have to travel to us for tubal reversal and many patients find that more affordable than having tubal reversal in their area. Your only other option would be IVF. IVF costs about $10,000 per cycle and in women over the age of 42 they recommend using donor eggs.

Eggs will age during pregnancy and having more pregnancies does not necessarily mean you can extend your fertility into the peri-menopausal years. During pregnancy a woman will not ovulate so the number of eggs they have left may be more than someone who has had more ovulatory events but the eggs will still age.

It can be very hard to become pregnant naturally after the age of 43. With IVF the chance is less than 5% and with tubal reversal it would be about the same. If you used IVF with donor eggs the chance of pregnancy would be about 50%. We have had a patient become pregnant naturally and deliver at the age of 47, but result this can not be expected by every person who has reversal after the age of 43.

TONNA – I assume when you say you are perimenopausal that you have some abnormal hormone assays. However, if you are having normal cycles and are ovulating as determined with an ovulation predictor kit, then there is certainly a chance to become pregnant after tubal reversal. The other option is donor egg IVF.

I am 43. My husband and I have a total five children, none together. He is 38. I have have been pregnant 3 times, one of which was miscarried very early, only to be pregnant again before even my next menstrual cycle. Tubal ligation is possible. The procedure is very safe. It would not be financially wise to have a tubal ligation at the age of 51 because there is a very low chance of pregnancy. Either adoption or IVF with donor eggs would be the best approach. If you tried to become pregnant at the age of 51 the chance of pregnancy would be less than 1% and almost zero; however, if you underwent IVF with donor eggs the chance of pregnancy would be approximately 50%. A recent blog of ours discusses IVF success compared with tubal reversal surgery with increasing patient age.

The answer is yes. Although, a natural pregnancy at 48 would be very rare (we did just have someone in our practice become pregnant at the age of 47)!

IVF with donor eggs provides the highest success rate at close to 50%. Tubal ligation reversal is an option; however, the chance of a natural pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal at the age of 48 would be very low.

I am 42 and strongly desire another baby. I attended the S.O.F.T. clinic in London Ont and was told by the Dr. I was not a good candidate for the reversal surgery because my tubes were cauterised after being cut. He told us the electic current destroys most of the tube. I have 3 beautiful children age 9, 6 and 2 and thought that i would be happy with just the 3. My husband is not sure if he wants to have another because he is convinced we are too old and because we both are police officers and work shift work another baby may be too hard. I was in my 30′s when i conceived all of my children; because I was older when I had them would that meen i may beable to conceive at 42 if i had the surgery. I really want to have it done. I had a c-section with my son (not anticipated) and the idea of having my tubes done was jokingly brought up. I had no idea there were different types you could have done and was never told this. I also did not research it either since I had 2 normal deliveries in the past. I still have my period every month at almost the same time. Do I have a chance of being a mother again.

I think it is a great idea to provide this information to us more “mature” moms! I think it will be good to discuss hormone levels as they change over 40, what additional fertility tests a woman over 40 may want to get and what those levels should be and mean. There are many options including medications available to help a woman with higher or slightly abnormal levels, but it would be good to know this going into the TTC journey! I look forward to your information!
