Canadian woman
It is feasible to have reversal surgery at our center and we have performed surgery on women around your age. I encourage you to see your doctor to make sure your symptoms are not do to some other medical condition before undertaking the expense and time to have a tubal reversal surgery.

I am a 51 year old who had tubal ligation (tied and cauterized) done after birth of son in 1984. I do not want to get pregnant. I was never informed of the symptoms of post-ligation. I have suffered all symptoms and now am exhibiting menopause. I want a reversal to try to gain some health back. Is this feasible?

Jeannete Cosgrove - Comparing tubal reversal and IVF, reversal of tubal ligation is more successful unless you decide to do donor egg IVF. If you decide on the latter, that will have the highest pregnancy rate at your age.

Hi I am 46 now and I had my first baby with 38 and the second with 41 and the third with 42. My doctor in Germany tied the tubes by burning and cutting some off.I did that because of all the pressure from outside who said I am to old ect..because of all the negative things that can happen with the baby ect. But now I am thinking I really would like to have a last child. So what is the best advice to do.? IVT or reversal tubal ligation? And it needs to be happen within the next year. Thanks for your answer.

Gina - If you are having regular menstrual cycles, it is not too late for have a tubal ligation reversal. The risk of miscarriage increases with age, so the sooner you have the reversal procedure, the more likely it will be to allow you to have a child.

I got my tubes tied at the age of 26, I am now 41. I just married my soul mate on April 4 2011. We both want to have a child together but we/he believes its to late.
Is there a big risk at my age. and if not should it be done a.s.a.p? how rushed are we?

Tasha - You are not too old to have a tubal reversal procedure. As long as you are having regular menstrual cycles, there is a good chance for you to get pregnant and have another baby. Call (919) 968-4656 to speak with a Tubal Reversal Nurse about this.

You would be a good candidate for tubal reversal. You should consider having the tubal reversal before the age of 43 so that you can have the best chance of becoming pregnant.

Kerilah
You would be a good candidate for tubal reversal. I advise you have it done as soon as possible and not wait too long. In general about 70% of our patients get pregnant after reversal and after the age of 40 about 30% of patients become pregnant. The surgery is very safe but the main risk of tubal reversal is ectopic pregnancy. If you follow our early pregnancy monitoring protocol ectopic pregnancies can be easily diagnosed and treated early.

I had my son when I was 20 yrs old and in a horrible relationship. I had my tubes tied nearly 8 years ago, thinking I would never again have children. I am now 39 and in the most wonderful relationship of my life. I am back in school and we plan to marry after I graduate. I will be 43 yrs old by the time we are shopping for a house. He is quite a bit younger than I am, and we would like to have a child together...I thought adoption was our only option. Would I be a good candidate for tubal reversal? What kind of risk factors am I looking at for the pregnancy?

I am 47 years old and have had two pregnancies, both delivered by c-section. My youngest child is now 25. I had a tubal ligation in 1994. I have recently remarried and my husband and I would love to have a child together. My periods are still very regular, so I'm wondering if that's a "pro" to having a reversal. Thanks.

Michelle - Your options to be able to get pregnant again are either tubal ligation reversal or IVF with donor eggs. If you choose to have tubal reversal surgery, the sooner the better since fertility continues to decline with age. If you need assistance from a tubal reversal nurse call (919) 968-4656.

Chris - As long as you are having regular periods, there is a reasonable chance of becoming pregnant again after tubal reversal. It would be best to consult with your rheumatologist about this.

I am 40 soon to be 41. I have 5 kids - my last one in 2004 when I had my tubes tied. I don't know how the surgery was done since I didn't know there was a difference at the time. I am getting remarried to a man who is younger than me and we would like to at least have one child together. I have Chrons and rheumetoid arthrtis and gout. I would like to have my tubal reversed, but am not sure what the health risks in conjunction with those diseases would be? I am very healthy otherwise and only go on bouts with them sometimes. I still have regular periods and don't see anything that would mean I have signs of menopause. So you think that my chances are still good at becoming pregnant? I was very fertile before the tubal. Thank you.

Kay
Most women will become pregnant after tubal reversal without the need for any additional medications or fertility treatments. Currently the cost for tubal reversal surgery at our facility is $5400 to $5900. This cost includes everything except airfare, meals, and lodging.

I am having regular periods and I recently remarried to a younger man who wants children, what are the tests involved and the cost of the procedure before the actual surgery? And do you fellow up with hormone drugs to help the women achieve pregnancy?

Cindy
Most tubal ligations can be reversed and pregnancy can happen with only one tube. You would have to travel to us for tubal reversal and many patients find that more affordable than having tubal reversal in their area. Your only other option would be IVF. IVF costs about $10,000 per cycle and in women over the age of 42 they recommend using donor eggs.

I am 41yrs old and have been pregnant 10 times. I have 3 children and have had 6 miscarriages before 9 weeks and one tubal pregnancy at 8 weeks where I lost that tube. Is it important to know if that tube was tied, cut or burned? I am now remarried and would like to have another child.
Debra
Eggs will age during pregnancy and having more pregnancies does not necessarily mean you can extend your fertility into the peri-menopausal years. During pregnancy a woman will not ovulate so the number of eggs they have left may be more than someone who has had more ovulatory events but the eggs will still age.

JCKNS
It can be very hard to become pregnant naturally after the age of 43. With IVF the chance is less than 5% and with tubal reversal it would be about the same. If you used IVF with donor eggs the chance of pregnancy would be about 50%. We have had a patient become pregnant naturally and deliver at the age of 47, but result this can not be expected by every person who has reversal after the age of 43.

I am just turning 45, I have 5 children from 4 pregnancies, I had my tubes tied after my twins were born..almost 13yrs ago. In a new marriage and would love to have another, could a reversal be my option? Not sure how to get started.

Christine - At age 39 and with regular periods, it is certainly possible to become pregnant again after tubal ligation reversal. Recovery from the procedure before trying to conceive is usually 1-2 weeks.

TONNA - I assume when you say you are perimenopausal that you have some abnormal hormone assays. However, if you are having normal cycles and are ovulating as determined with an ovulation predictor kit, then there is certainly a chance to become pregnant after tubal reversal. The other option is donor egg IVF.

I am 43. My husband and I have a total five children, none together. He is 38. I have have been pregnant 3 times, one of which was miscarried very early, only to be pregnant again before even my next menstrual cycle. My tubes were tied in 1997 in a military hospital and so I'm not sure which procedure was used. We would love to have a child together but had pretty figured it isn't possible. I have controlled high blood pressure and was told recently that I am perimenopausal but have normal cycles. What are my chances to become pregnant and/or options, or would it be unwise all together?

Margaret Mee
You had small segments removed from your tube and your chance at a successful tubal reversal would be excellent!

I would advise you email our Nurse Administrator JuliaS@tubal-reversal.net
who can help answer any further questions and also guide you along the process of scheduling a successful tubal reversal surgery with us.

MONA - The preoperative tests needed at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are listed on the Preop Lab Tests page. If you have not had these done, they may cost one or two hundred dollars. The cost of having either Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith perform your surgery is under six thousand dollars and if you schedule by the end of February you can save another one thousand dollars.

I already did the testings for my fiance and myself and all is good. Its going to cost us another eight thousand to do the actual surgery. Would it be possible to find another tubal reversal doctor, but with the same information from the first doctor with the test results? Or would we have to spend another four thousand dollars for more tests?

Angie
Tubal ligation is possible. The procedure is very safe. It would not be financially wise to have a tubal ligation at the age of 51 because there is a very low chance of pregnancy. Either adoption or IVF with donor eggs would be the best approach. If you tried to become pregnant at the age of 51 the chance of pregnancy would be less than 1% and almost zero; however, if you underwent IVF with donor eggs the chance of pregnancy would be approximately 50%. A recent blog of ours discusses IVF success compared with tubal reversal surgery with increasing patient age.

I am 51 and I have been married for 9 months to a younger man and we are looking into the possibility of having my tubal ligation reversed to have a baby. My tubes have been tied for about 20 years. I want to know are there risks of tubal ligation, would it be possible, would this be a wise choice, and would this work for us?

The answer is yes. Although, a natural pregnancy at 48 would be very rare (we did just have someone in our practice become pregnant at the age of 47)!

IVF with donor eggs provides the highest success rate at close to 50%. Tubal ligation reversal is an option; however, the chance of a natural pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal at the age of 48 would be very low.

As long as you are having regular menstrual cycles and are ovulating, there is certainly a chance of being a mother again. Read this recent testimonial from one our our patients who just had her TR baby at age 47! Of course, the pregnancy rates for women in the forties is lower than for younger women, and since fertility continues to decline with increasing age, if you are interested in having your tubes repaired, I suggest contacting our Nurse Administrator - Julia Smith, RN - for assistance without delay. She can be reached at her email address: julias@tubal-reversal.net or by telephone at (919) 656-8204. If you call, please remember there is a 5 hour difference in our time zones.

I am 42 and strongly desire another baby. I attended the S.O.F.T. clinic in London Ont and was told by the Dr. I was not a good candidate for the reversal surgery because my tubes were cauterised after being cut. He told us the electic current destroys most of the tube. I have 3 beautiful children age 9, 6 and 2 and thought that i would be happy with just the 3. My husband is not sure if he wants to have another because he is convinced we are too old and because we both are police officers and work shift work another baby may be too hard. I was in my 30's when i conceived all of my children; because I was older when I had them would that meen i may beable to conceive at 42 if i had the surgery. I really want to have it done. I had a c-section with my son (not anticipated) and the idea of having my tubes done was jokingly brought up. I had no idea there were different types you could have done and was never told this. I also did not research it either since I had 2 normal deliveries in the past. I still have my period every month at almost the same time. Do I have a chance of being a mother again.

We have patients who come from other countries with regularity. It is easier than it seems- essentially the cost of a plane ticket. Many patients can fly to us with a cheaper airfare than some patients who come to us from Alaska, California, or Hawaii!

It is so important to be able to make a well informed decision regarding one's health and to understand both the risks and benefits of surgery. I look forward to reading all the articles in the series! What a wonderful topic to discuss Dr. Monteith!

Thank you, Dr. Monteith, for addressing this tubal reversal issue. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center has seen more patients 40 and over come to us for tubal reversal. For prospective patients in this age group considering tubal reversal, they will be more informed to make a decision.

This is such a good topic. It seems that more and more we are seeing ladies over the age of forty who come to us for tubal ligation reversal. They come to us with their own specific questions . In this blog, Dr Monteith begins to answer these questions. Thank you Dr Monteith.

An ovulation predictor kit (OPK) can be purchased at any pharmacy. If you would like assistance in having your tubes untied, call a Tubal Reversal Nurse at (919) 968-4656.

I have had 4 children and would like to have one more for him as I know he would be a great father. He just never got the chance to father a child. Can I tell if I am still ovulating It has been over 19 years since I had my tubes tide. They just tied my tubes; they didn’t burn them. Can I buy ovulating kit at the store?

Thank you for your comment Phyllis and this is just what we are trying to do. We have close to 20 articles- so hang in there with us because some may not seem so encouraging but in the end you should have a good idea of what to expect.

Thanks for sharing this information. I'm sure woman 40 and older will be interested in knowing that tubal reversal surgery has a higher success rate than the alternative IVF in this age category.

This information should be of real interest to our patients over 40 who are contemplating all of their options to have another child. Education is key to making this important decision. Dr. Monteith always writes a thought provoking and educational blog.

I think it is a great idea to provide this information to us more "mature" moms! I think it will be good to discuss hormone levels as they change over 40, what additional fertility tests a woman over 40 may want to get and what those levels should be and mean. There are many options including medications available to help a woman with higher or slightly abnormal levels, but it would be good to know this going into the TTC journey! I look forward to your information!
