I am 38 years of age and my husband is 48. I have two daughters 19 and 15 years of age. I have had my tubs tied since I was 22 years old. I am remaried, and we would like to have a couple of kids togrther. So with my age, would a tubal reversal be my best bet, or would a IVF be better.

Tammy - You can have your tubal ligation reversed. There may be some doctors in Arkansas who perform tubal reversals but if you want the best chance of getting pregnant you need to go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. You can see from the pregnancy statistics of their patients that you will have an 80% or better chance of pregnancy at Chapel Hill. It is the only medical facility exclusively for tubal reversal surgery in the world.

Michelle - Essure reversal is a better choice than IVF unless you want to use donor eggs for the IVF since you are over 40 years of age.

I am 42 & had an Essure procedure in 2009. I am since remarried to my husband who is 59. We would like to have at least one child together. I have a handsome son 6 & beautiful daughter 4. Would the reversal be the best choice for us or IVF? We would like to make a decision soon. Thank you!

Theresa – You can have a tubal reversal. If you are having regular menstrual periods, there is the chance to have another baby. IVF is generally not performed at age 45 unless you used donor eggs (from a younger woman).

At the age of 44 IVF with donor eggs is the best way to get pregnant and this give you a 50% chance but will cost $15,000 to $20,000. You could have an Essure reversal and become pregnant. We charge $6900 and, on average, the chance of pregnancy is 50%. If you are having periods you can become pregnant but at the age of 44 your chances would not be 50% and would likely be less than 10%….but still possible.

Michelle – As long as your high blood pressure is under control with medication, it is certainly possible to have a tubal reversal and pregnancy without any increased risk.

Unfortunately, if both tubes have been removed we can not help you. You will need to consider in vitro fertilization (IVF) with a local provider. At the age of 43, they will recommend you use donor eggs with the IVF.

I am 43 and when I was young I had both tubes removed and one ovary removed. Now I think I am in pre-menopause. I have one son I had at 13 and he is now 28. I am 43 and would love to have a baby. I missed so much at that age. Can you help?

It is unclear if having a tubal reversal near perimenopause is beneficial. It is very possible you are undergoing hormonal changes as you approach menopause. Your doctor or a second opinion may be helpful.

I am 55 years old. I had a tubal ligation at age 29, after a fourth c-section. The doctor told me there were no side effects with a TL. Since that time, I have experienced heavier periods with severe cramps. I have had more severe PMS and being perimenopausal, I am still having periods — but sometimes, three periods a month. My children are raised, but I’m wondering if it is possible to do a reversal and get some relief for my crazy hormones & migraines. I donated a kidney in 2001 and worry about all the medication I have to take to relieve the pain of cramps and the stress it puts on my remaining kidney. At my age, I need help! I can’t find support or help from any GYN here in Utah. I have had thyroid issues as well, that I didn’t experience until the TL. The article explains some of the lesser known and unexpected forms of infertility. Often IVF is the first suggestion for infertility. As Dr. Monteith states, for women who have had a tubal ligation, tubal reversal is the best first option.
