Tubal Reversal: Relief From Guilt

Some-women-regret-tubal-ligationA recent tubal ligation reversal patient, Briana, traveled to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center to relieve herself of the guilt over her tubal ligation. Since she is a medical professional in a small town, Briana asked us not use her real name or picture to maintain her privacy.

She eagerly shared her story  about her tubal ligation and her reasons for wanting reversal of her sterilization.

Briana is the mother of six children. Her husband is also a medical professional and the father of all of their children. Together, they live in Charleston, New Hampshire. Here is Briana’s story…

Tubal Ligation: Briana’s Reasons

Briana is in the medical field and she takes good care of her body. She is  healthy, active, and an avid soccer player. As a result of soccer, she has sustained many injuries to her knees and back. She has had multiple knee injuries, which have required several surgeries.

Most relevant to her reason for tubal ligation was a sacral (tail bone) injury  because of soccer. This injury caused the tip of her sacrum to point straight up into her birth canal and act like a speed bump inside her birth canal. Her babies are big (9 and 10 lbs) and her babies tend to rotate to the face up position. The end result is long, painful childbirth.

She had just completed the birth of her sixth child. Her birth was long and filled with severe back labor. After this painful experience, she made a quick, pressured decision to have a tubal ligation.

Tubal Ligation Procedure

Briana’s obstetrician told her, “Your body has suffered enough…” and she should consider having her tubes tied. Briana’s husband did not want his wife to tie her tubes, but he acknowledged it was her body and she could do as she wished.

Briana said she heard a quiet voice in the back of her head saying, “Do not do it”. She wishes she had listened.

Having recently undergoing a painful, natural delivery, Briana consented to the sterilization procedure and underwent a post partum tubal ligation. Three months later she began to regret her decision.

Tubal Ligation Side Effects: Regret

Briana identifies herself as Catholic and she feels a tremendous amount of guilt and regret over having a sterilization procedure. She expressed the concern of having done something unnatural to her body and against God’s greater will.

Looking back, she felt like her doctor had singled her out because she had six children. Briana feels she was given directed counseling about the physical toll of childbirth to her body at a time when she was most vulnerable. It took Briana several years to come to terms with having her tubes tied.

Reversal Of Tubal Ligation: Sense Of Hope

tubal-reversal-gives-many-couples-hopeFour years later, Briana decided to have her tubes untied and she traveled to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for the procedure. Her husband was unable to attend because of work and childcare responsibilities. A close friend traveled with her as her responsible adult caretaker.

Briana and her friend traveled by plane and arrived on a Sunday. She scheduled her surgery with Dr. Monteith had her pre-operative tubal reversal surgery interview early Monday morning.

Tubal Reversal Procedure

Briana’s tubal reversal procedure went well. Her abdominal surgical incision was about 2 inches in length (about half the length of a credit card). Her tubes were in good condition and her tubes were repaired using a microsurgical tubotubal anastamosis procedure. Her repaired tubal lengths were 4 and 5 cm and her surgery lasted 57 minutes exactly.

After Tubal Reversal: Briana’s Recovery

Briana and her caretaker were seen in the recovery room and informed of her operative results. She was then discharge to the local Sheraton hotel and was seen by a member of our staff the next day. She was doing well with minimal pain and was then cleared for return home.

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome: Guilt

After tubal ligation, many women feel a sense of guilt because they have made a permanent decision to change their bodies and stop their fertility.

Briana underwent a successful tubal reversal procedure and the staff of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center wishes Briana and her partner good luck in their efforts to become pregnant. We have reversed her tubes and we hope we have been able to reverse her sense of guilt and regret over her tubal ligation procedure.

Thank you for sharing this story. I too was pushed toward the tubal because it was my fourth child and happened to be a C section. I have regretted it for the past 8 years and every woman I know has done the same. I blamed my husband for not stopping me and that wasn’t fair. It has affected me emotionally and physically.
