Chances of Getting Pregnant After Tubal Ligation Reversal
Posted On: Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Chances of getting pregnant after tubal reversalWomen who think about having a tubal ligation reversal ask themselves, “What are the chances of becoming pregnant after tubal ligation reversal?”

These women may seek advice from their local doctors who are unfamiliar with tubal reversal surgery, some will see reproductive specialists who will have limited personal experience with sterilization reversal procedures but more experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF), and others will search the internet and be bombarded with advertisements and statements unsupported by facts.

Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, the only medical center specializing exclusively in performing tubal ligation reversals, has the unique advantage of providing factual information about the chances of getting pregnant after tubal reversal based on extensive data. The tubal reversal doctors, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith, have performed over 8,000 reversals of female sterilization. The Center maintains an extensive follow-up pregnancy database that provides the most accurate information on the chances of getting pregnant after tubal reversal that is available on the internet or in medical publications. The clinical practices at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are an example of evidence-based medicine.

What Are The Chances of Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal?

Over the last several decades the practice of reproductive medicine has drifted towards in vitro fertilization. As a result, many reproductive specialists have limited experience with tubal ligation reversal.

General ob gyn doctors have almost no exposure to reversal tubal surgery and limited experience with women who have become pregnant afterward. The cumulative effect has been that many doctors are unfamiliar with tubal reversal surgery and the actual chances of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal.

Most of our patients become pregnant after tubal reversal. Our pregnancy statistics show that approximately 70% of all patients will report pregnancy. The success rate can be as high as 90% depending on the type of tubal ligation and age of the patient. In comparison, IVF pregnancy success is on average 30-35% for each IVF cycle.

Chances of Becoming Pregnant After Tubal Reversal

The chances of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal depend on at least two known factors:

Patient age
Method of tubal ligation

Chances of Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal: Age

A woman’s age is a strong predictor of the chance of successful conception and pregnancy. In general, as age increases the risk of miscarriage increases and, therefore, the chance of a successful pregnancy decreases.

Pregnancy chances based on age after tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are approximately 80% for women under the age of 30 and 30% for women over the age of 40.

Chances of Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal: Tubal Sterilization Method

Tubal reversal provides excellent chances at pregnancyThe type of tubal ligation can impact the chances of becoming pregnant after a tubal ligation. Our pregnancy statistics demonstrate the chances of pregnancy based upon the type of tubal ligation.

Pregnancy chances after tubal reversal based on type of tubal ligation at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are: tubal ring or clip reversal 75%, tubal coagulation (burning) reversal 66%, and tubal ligation and resection (cutting) reversal 63%.

Chances of Pregnancy After Essure Reversal

The overall pregnancy rate after tubouterine implantation – the procedure required for Essure reversal is approximately 50%.

How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant After Tubal Reversal?

Many of our patients ask, “How long does it take to become pregnant after a tubal reversal?

The monthly probability of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal is approximately 8-10%. Since tubal ligation reversal provides this chance each month, the cumulative pregnancy rate continues to rise with increasing time and surpasses the pregnancy rate associated with treatment by IVF. Most of our patients become pregnant within eight months after tubal reversal, but for some patients pregnancy may not occur until one or more years after their reversal procedure.

  10. harris0131 Says:

I am 28 and I had a tubal clamp in 2004. I had my operation report and all it says is 2 clamps on each tube. Whats the chances of them being reversed and able to become pregnant with having 2 clamps. Will I loose a lot of tube?

  11. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Harris0131

Your chances of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal would be close to 80%.

The tubal clips usually do not damage a lot of the tube. If they tubal clips were placed far apart then this could damage a larger portion of the tube; however, most doctors do not place the tubal clips far apart.

Over 98% of patients can have a successful tubal reversal and the pregnancy rates at your age with tubal clip reversal would be close to 80%.

  12. had reversal Says:

I am 30 and had clips on my tubes. I had a reversal by a very reputable doctor in September 2009. What are my chances of getting pregnant after reversal?

  13. Charles Monteith MD Says:

You should check with your doctor about their success rates. Our tubal clip reversal patients have close to 80% success rate and most of them become pregnant within 8 month of reversal surgery.

  15. MGuerrero Says:

I had the hulka clips placed in 2005. I am now 27 years-old. I am quite impressed with your success rate, but one of my biggest concerns remains: I had an ectopic pregnancy in 2002 and lost a section of my left tube. Will this hurt my chances, and will the previous ectopic increase my risk of having another after reversal surgery?

  16. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    MGuerrero
As long as you have at least one tube after reversal then you have an excellent chance of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal. With tubal reversal surgery there is an increased risk of ectopic. This is very manageable if you follow our early pregnancy protocol.
It is difficult to say if your risk of ectopic is increased even more because of your history. It depends on the reason for your ectopic pregnancy. If the reason for your ectopic was PID then you may have a higher risk of ectopic after tubal reversal surgery. If there was an unknown reason then your chance of ectopic pregnancy may not be increased after reversal.

  36. Angela Says:

Just wanted to leave a note for the women who have asked about clips on their tubes for their ligation. I received a tubal ligation with filshie clips in 2003. In December 2006, Dr. Berger performed a tubal reversal. I was left with very long lengths for each tube. To this day we have birth TWO tubal reversal babies. Born in 2008 and 2010. So the answer to many questions on patients who have the clips, YES!! You can conceive! I never had a miscarriage and have 2 beautiful babies. I took the chance with Dr. Berger and he did a wonderful job. Healing time was quick and my PTLS symptoms went away all together. It is like I never had my tubes tied. So for you ladies debating, just do it. Take that step like I did. I’m so happy I did.

  37. cathy Says:

I have been seriously considering having a reversal done for a few months now, and my husband and I are hoping to conceive another child. 41. Dr. Berger Says:

HeatherD – At age 25, your chances of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal are in the range of 90%.

  42. Rumph Says:

I had the Bilateral tubal transection postpartum. My right fallopian tubes had some adhesions around it on both tubes and the bilateral grasped with Babcock forceps, ligated, 2-0 plain catgut and transected according to the Pomeroy method. Similar was done to the left. So, what is my chances.

  50. corina Says:

  55. paula Says:

i have four daughters, 38 had tubes clamped five years ago, my last two girls were easy to conceive with my husband, we want one more, never missed a period in my life, not a smoker , drinker, drug user, relatively healthy pregnancies with all the girls…..Am I too old?

  56. Dr. Berger Says:

Paula – You are not too old! Many women who have had their tubal reversal older than 35 at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center have tubal reversal babies.

  57. Melissa M. Says:

I had my tubes tied almost 11 years ago. I do not know what type of ligation I had…just know that they went through the bellybutton to do it…Now, I am with a man I love more than anything in the world and he has no children of his own. I am considering a reversal….I am 40 years old.. My concern is…if I get the reversal…how long before I could conceive? I dont want to be 45 and pregnant…HELP~!!!!! What should I do?

  58. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Melissa
After the age of 40 about 30% of patients who have tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center will become pregnant. Most patients will conceive within 12 months of having reversal surgery. IVF is less than 30% successful among women over the age of 40.

  59. Niata Says:

I wonder if anyone will maybe be able to point my husband and i in the right direction in South Africa!!! I had my tubes tied after we had our 3rd baby, now 5 years later we are desperate to have another little one, i have considered IVF but find it very invasive, so this would be ideal if i could get in touch with a Dr that could perform the Surgery in South Africa… Please …

  60. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Niata
We are unaware of any qualified tubal reversal providers outside of the United States.

  61. Amanda Says:

I’m wanting to have the reversal one as well. However, I want mine for a sanity factor. I’m not sure how many believe in the “Post Tubal Syndrome” but it is someting I truly believe I have. Is this something that may be able to be covered by insurance? Or is it a strict out of pocket cost? Thanks.

  62. Dr. Berger Says:

Amanda – It is very unlikely that insurance will reimburse for a tubal reversal but you can check your policy or talk to your H.R. representative to inquire.

  63. Jenn Says:

I had a tubal reversal on 6/27/11,I usually get my period towards the 22nd of each month during surgery a foley catheter was used and was told i may bleed for a couple days..my question is it is now the 25th of the month and havent gotten my period but as they said I would bleed for a couple days and I did..does it take time for my cycle to be normal again or is there a chance I could be pregnant?and also for the above comment most insurances do not cover this procedure, thankfully mine covered 100%..I work for New York State..thanks

  64. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Jenn
It does take time for your cycle to become normal for some woman but always take a pregnancy test. Close communication with your tubal reversal doctor will be important for you.

  65. ashley Says:

I had my tubes done back in 05..I’m 31 an in farely good shape…if I was to get a reversal done how bad would it be after having a child with my husband now an then turn around an have my tubes redone tied snipped burned..would it be possible or should I just keep it as is an possibly adopt..

  66. Dr. Berger Says:

Ashley – You should be able to have your tubes repaired to have another baby and then have a second tubal ligation. After the second tubal ligation, you will not be able to get them repaired again.

  67. Sarah Says:

My question: I had a tubal done in ’08 and my doctor used tubal clips. I only have one clip now because I lost my left ovary and left fallopian tube due to cysts. Now I have been thinking what if I get a reversal done it will a lot simpler that I have only the right side to deal with. What exactly would need to be done besides taking the clip off? Also is there reduction in the cost?

  68. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Sarah
Clip reversal is not as simple as just removing the clip. The clip causes the tubes to close. The clips are generally removed and the tubal ends are opened up and rejoined using microsurgical techniques. Your chances of pregnancy success would be excellent with clip reversal of one tube. The cost is the same as it is for having both tubes reversed.

  69. Janet Says:

What are the chances of getting pregnant when you have the clip on the tubes? I read that having the clip is not the safest method to use for a tubal. Isn’t the clip suppose to close up the tube?

  70. Charles Monteith MD Says:

Tubal clips are very safe and the chance of a failed tubal clip is about 4 out of 1000 women. Clip removal and tubal reversal provides a 80% chance of pregnancy success.

  71. Anonymous Says:

I am 37 years old. I have two daughters via c-section secondary to breech delivery. My tubes were cut, tied, and burnt according to the MD. What would be my chances of getting pregnant after a reversal and would it even br recommended at my age?

  72. Charles Monteith MD Says:

At the age of 37 your chances of getting pregnant after reversal of cut, tied, and burnt tubes would be 62%. Tubal reversal is a recommended alternative to IVF for you.

  73. Nakia Says:

I had a tubal ligation in 2001. I want to have a tubal reversal done. I am 34 years old, what would my chances be of becoming pregnant. I had four successful pregnancies with my ex husband. Now that I am remarried I want to have a child by my husband. Will I be safe?

  74. Dr. Berger Says:

Nakia – At age 34, your chances of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center will be 70%. It is a very safe procedure that over 10,000 women have had done as outpatient surgery here in Chapel Hill.

  78. Charles Monteith MD Says:

    Pinky
If you are having regular periods then pregnancy is always possible. It is harder to become pregnant after the age of 43 but we have had patients become naturally pregnant and have healthy babies at the age of 47.

  79. Zyanna Says:

I have had 3 c-sections and I got my tubes clamped. I’m 21yrs and want to have the surgery would I be at risk by having another c-section birth after surgery?

  80. Charles Monteith MD Says:

Multiple c-sections do increase the risk with each pregnancy but most women do fine and don’t have any complications. We have done tubal reversal on women with 6 to 8 prior c-sections.

  81. tanika Says:

I had my tubes tied in 2003. I am 34.. im looking to untie my tubes. What are my chances after 8-9 yrs. It was the pomeroy procedure that they used.

  83. Jones Says:

I’m 34 and have had 3 c-sections and tubes tied not sure which way in 01. And seeking advice to see if I could conceive at this age and it be a risk to have another c-section.

  87. ms. Fletcher Says:

My tubes been tied 11 yrs. What are my chances and what will I need to do?

  88. Dr. Monteith Says:

    Ms. Fletcher

  89. Ms wilson Says:

Im 34..had my tubes tied, clipped, and burnt back in 2001 after my 4th child was born! I have regularly menstruation, even though I’m 12 days late now, for the most part its regular. 90. Dr. Berger Says:

Ms Wilson – You can have a tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. At age 34 your chances of conceiving another child are 70% and the average time to get pregnant is 8 months.

  91. Anonymous Says:
