Essure Removal: Can Essure Be Reversed? Ask Michelle
Posted On: Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Can Essure be removed? Can Essure be reversed?

couple before essure removalThese are two questions we are frequently asked by patients who contact Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

Essure removal, reversal, and pregnancy are all possible.

Michelle and Harrison are proof  pregnancy can occur after an Essure reversal. This couple traveled to us from Colorado for Essure coil removal.

They are now happily pregnant after their Essure reversal and Michelle is due to deliver within several weeks.

Tubal Ligation Or Essure Sterilization?

Michelle was a stay at home mom and she had three children very close in age: 4,3, and 1. After her third child, she began researching the benefits or tubal ligation vs the Essure sterilization procedure.

She decided on having an Essure sterilization because the procedure did not have to be done in the hospital, she would not have to have any incisions made on her abdomen, and she would recover quicker. She chose to have an Essure sterilization over a tubal ligation.

Michelle soon became divorced and found herself on her own  in her early twenties and with three children.

Essure Removal After Mom Changes Life

Michelle’s mother was at a bar one day and she started talking to a cute guy. His name was Harrison. She thought he would be a great guy to introduce to her daughter…so she took a picture with her cell phone and sent it to Michelle! It was love at first sight and after a brief introduction the two hit it off and soon became engaged.

Michelle is currently a stay at home mom and is in Nursing School. Harrison is active duty military and is stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington state. They have a long distance relationship but plan to be together and get married in the near future.

Michelle soon began thinking about having more children and she then began researching Essure removal.

Essure Reversal Or IVF: Which Is Better?

Michelle researched her pregnancy options and was trying to choose between Essure reversal or IVF.

She eventually decided not to pursue IVF because it was not 100% and was too expensive. She was quoted $25-45,000 by her local IVF provider for a program which allowed a maximum of 4 IVF cycle attempts. The hormones and technical aspects of the treatment were not appealing to Michelle so she decided to come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for Essure reversal.

Essure Sterilization Reversal

Michelle traveled from Colorado for Essure sterilization reversal. Her surgery lasted 54 minutes, both Essure coils were removed, and the healthy portion of the tubes were reinserted into her uterine cavity (tubouterine implantation) to bypass the Essure induced tubal blockage.

She did well in the recovery room and was discharged to the local hotel to recover.

Pregnancy After Essure Reversal

essure coils after removalPregnancy after Essure reversal  took a little time since Harrison is active duty military and has been apart from Michelle because of military obligations.

Michelle had her first positive pregnancy test eight months after Essure reversal!

Michelle’s first pregnancy after Essure found its way into her uterus and has been developing safe and sound. She is due to give birth in April of 2011.

Michelle’s experience offers proof that Essure can be removed, Essure can be reversed, and natural pregnancy after Essure reversal is indeed  possible. We will update readers as soon as we receive the news of delivery from Michelle and Harrison.

Help me! I want my coils out but I am scared. I am getting sharp stabbing pains on my left side and I am afraid they that left side one is out of place. I just think of other damage that could be done to my body for having them in there. I don’t plan on having other babies…just want to have them removed and I can take pills or anything else no tubal either. What are the pros and the cons of taking them out?

  14. Dr. Berger Says:

The Essure coils can be removed and your tubes not reconnected to the uterus, so it would be as if you had a standard tubal ligation. I can’t think of any disadvantage to having this done.

  15. Anonymous Says:

  17. Mi Mi Says:

I am truly regretting having the Essure procedure done. I wish I would’ve explored other options before making this decision. I have experienced so much pain after having this done and I still do. It has been a little over 3 years since my surgery and I really want them out. Ive been told so many times that its not reversible and then I’ve heard that it is. I don’t know what to believe. If I could go back 3 years ago to that day, I wouldn’t have had the procedure done.

  18. please advise.....thank you Says:

i had the essure procedure done the 2nd week of oct. i’m experiencing pelvic pain and back side pain, in particular the pain and discomfort seems to come from the right side. i don’t think i can last having these coils in my body. i never had any back pain in my 40 years of life!
i would like to know if you can remove these coils in case there are no doctors in illinois that are certified to removed them. i cannot take the pain and discomfort and don’t plan on living my life with pain.
    thank you.

  21. Christine Ries Says:

I am a Catholic and realize after reading Humanae Vitae how wrong it was that I had this procedure done–my pastor suggested it as an alternative to a traditional tubal ligation—I shouldn’t have done it at all in the first place. I had it done 8 years ago and am nearing 43 years old. In your opinion, after 8 years is it possible to remove—and is it safe to remove from someone my age?

  22. Christine Ries Says:

I’m in Colorado too :-) —when I had it done I was one of the first people in the state to have it done.

  23. Dr. Berger Says:

Christine Ries – It is possible to remove the Essure devices after 8 years and safe to do at your age. For further information, you can speak with a tubal reversal nurse at (919) 968-4656.

  24. Denise Abney Says:

  25. Anonymous Says:

Can having the Essure coils removed in an effort to have more kids cause birth defects if you get pregnant again?

  26. Dr. Berger Says:

There is nothing that would suggest Essure removal or Essure reversal may cause birth defects if you get pregnant again.
