Essure Side Effects: Occasionally Pain And Regret

surgeons treating essure side effects by removal of coilsEssure is a newer method of ‘tubal ligation’.

Despite being a newer method of permanent birth control, some women seem to experience side-effects from Essure similar to older methods of tubal ligation.

Most women who have the Essure procedure will be happy and will not have any problems. Some will experience regret and sometimes even pain.

These women will often wonder if Essure removal or Essure reversal are possible and will these procedures provide relief from the side-effects.

Essure Reversal: Is It Possible?

As many as one out of five women will experience regret after a tubal sterilization procedure.

Regret after Essure has not officially been studied; however, there is little reason to think regret after Essure is any different than regret after other forms of sterilization.

Most women who regret a sterilization procedure do so because of the desire to have more children and many women who contact Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center will inquire about the possibility of pregnancy after Essure reversal.

Is Essure Reversible? Can Pregnancy Happen?

tubouterine implantation procedure is required for essure reversalPregnancy is possible after Essure reversal. Essure is reversed at our facility by a tubouterine implantation procedure.

A small incision is made above the pubic bone, the Essure coils are removed, and the remaining healthy tubes are inserted into a newly created opening which by-passes the previous Essure blockage.

This is an out-patient surgery at our facility, surgery lasts about 90 minutes, and the chances of pregnancy after Essure reversal are 30-50%.

This is comparable to, if not higher than, the alternative treatment of in-vitro fertilization, which has an average success rate of 35% for each IVF cycle.

Essure Removal For Essure Problems

Essure coils as seen after removalEssure removal is often requested by patients who report side-effects after an Essure procedure.

These patients are frequently told they would need a hysterectomy to treat problems they are experiencing.

Essure removal is also done at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as a one hour, out-patient surgery.

A small incision is made just above the pubic bone and the coils are removed in their entirety. The tubes are not implanted into the uterine cavity so pregnancy will not occur and birth control after surgery is not necessary.

Most patients report improvement in their symptoms after removal surgery.

Cost of Essure Reversal

Essure reversal at our center currently costs $6900. Essure removal alone is less and is around $4900.

I would recommend waiting and additional 3 to 6 months to see how things go before considering removal surgery. It is possible if you get a tubal ligation done the symptoms may persist.

33yr mom with 4 kids. Had essure done in feb 2013. Since then, ive been feeling tired, have back pains, heavy periods and nausea all the time. Just got my HSG test done and found out only one tube was fully blocked. My doctor suggested waiting another 3 months to do another HSG test or he can remove the coils and do a regular tubal. I don’t mind waiting another 3 months but was wondering if there is any long term side effects with having the essure or if I should just have them removed now or will getting a tubal be any different. I just want to feel normal again. Sad and confused.

Weight gain is not a common side effect and can be from many different causes. You should see your doctor for a thyroid test.

I had the essure procedure done Nov 2012. I went in three months after for the follow up. Everything was good. I have noticed since my procedure in Nov, that I have gained 25 pounds. I gained 30 pounds during my pregnancy but lost it very soon afterwards. I have not changed anything that would cause me to gain weight. I feel and look pregnant and my work pants that I could fit in after I had my baby absolutely do not fit. Could this be a side affect? My Dr that did the procedure said that it would not be a side affect. Thanks.

Your diabetes should not cause a problem with Essure reversal as long as your blood sugars are under good control and you don’t have any heart or kidney problems.

  6. Amanda says:

I am a 31 year old type 1 diabetic. I have no children, and had Essure done at 26. I am deeply regretting it now, and want to have this reversed, but I worry that my diabetes would cause problems with healing and scarring with the tubouterine implantation.

Your doctor is the best to advise you about any Essure complications. We can certainly remove the coils if that is what you desire. You do not need a hysterectomy and your tubes do not have to be removed. PLease give us a call if you have any additional questions (919)968-4656.

Hi, I am wondering if you have any experience with women who have had one coil curl over….my doctor can not even tell me if it has perforated my tube unless she goes in there laproscopicly. The HSG test proved the dye got around this curled once over coil. She had trouble placing this coil that did not take and mentioned it could be a defect in my tube. She offered me to redo the HSG in 3 mo again but no guarantee that it will be closed. Please give my any info/suggestions. Thanks

  9. Sammy’s Mom – A standard method of tubal ligation such as bipolar coagulation and division would protect you from getting pregnant again without leaving any foreign objects inside your body.
