A common cause of blocked tubes is scar tissue. Tubal surgery for blocked tubes can be helpful, but after 2 tubal ligations, IVF may be your better option.

I am 24 years old and have a 3 and 6 year old. I have my tubes cut tied and burned due to my ex husband being away at war and I couldn't handle raising another. Now being older and finding the man of my dreams, he is always a war vet and young and wants a child. Is it possible to my tubes reversed even with being "burned" so I can make my hero a daddy? I had my tubal ligation in 2003 @ 23 y/o. I was ill informed of the possible problems after a tubal ligation and when I had the procedure I was in a marriage that had become abusive along with severe postpardum depression. I have gone through severe issues for the last 6 years and been told several diagnosis which where all wrong then another set of test and diagnosis all wrong and continued till recently to find out some of the issues are related to having cptsd (complex post traumatic stress disorder) and as well as epilepsy. Many things can cause irrational behavior as well as mood swings and attribute to loss of sex drive, weight gain, while yes several women do have complications from a tubal ligation and I have been told I am one with ptls after 6 years of testing,but for those of us who spent our savings on divorces and custody battles and can't afford the reversal, there are several options to managing the pain (not meaning pain medication), and the other symptoms you just have to try various options until you find what works if surgery is not an option for you. But their is a long list of medical conditions that have to be ruled out to be positive. Including various stds and hormonal issues even psychological, and neurological as well as diet and exercise, sleep routines, all plays part in this wonderful thing called the female body. It can be difficult to hear that they are unsure they have run tests other test and other tests it is frustrating but you have to hang in there. Many things cause the same symptoms it takes time but with a doctor who knows you and your history as well as all specialist you have gone to and has all records, it is possible to make it through the testing to discover the underlying issues. A doctor has to be sure not to miss something. It could very well mean a woman's life and their liscence. Having specialist in the field is what made me research and ask questions on each visit. Hearing about Dr. Berger from The Learning Channel assisted in knowing where to start searching for answers.

Emily The intent of the blog post was not to say doctors should not perform or women should not have tubal ligations. We were simply asking why perform such an aggressive procedure on a patient when a simpler approach would work just as well and have the same effect and allow the possibility of a tubal reversal? We believe in choice but not penalization.

It is deeply insulting and infantalizing to say that doctors should not perform tubals on women who are under 30 and/or have no children. Doctors should fully inform these patients, but ultimately it is the patient's choice. These are adult women who have every right to control their reproductive decision. And the patient should (and I believe many do) carefully consider what they want, and what exactly will take place during the procedure, with the knowledge that tubal ligation is intended to be permanent.

My husband and I are trying to have a child and I’ve successfully gotten pregnant. However, at this time we don’t have the health insurance needed for me to get an ultra sound to see how far along I am. We’ll have the insurance in January, but for now I’m taking extra good care of myself for my child’s sake. However, I have a pain and soreness where my right ovary should be and it’s swollen and stiff to the touch. I’m scared it could be an ectopic pregnancy… I can’t have an ultra sound yet to know for sure, and I’m scared. There’s no history of this happening in my family, and I don’t know what to think. I’m not having any other symptoms. Just the soreness and swelling. I also suffer from the occasional painful ovarian cyst, but I don’t know…

I want to thank Dr.Berger and all the members of his staff for all they have done for Jamie,Kraig and Kale. Speaking as a Grandmother I have never experienced such grief and loss as when Kohl passed away. I can't wait to save up the money to have my tubal reversal done. I had my tubal ligation done 2 years ago during my c-section and I totally regret it. My periods are 10 days long now when they use to only be 3 to 5 days. And I want another baby so bad. At the time I was in the process of a divorce and so afraid and overwhelmed with emotions. I feared getting pregnant in the future and having to raise all of the children alone. I wish I had waited because since that time, I met someone new and we would like to have a baby. I come to this site from time to time to read the success stories of other women who have had their tubes reversed. This site really gave me hope....

Great article and a good start. It is so important that take care of your body all the time and not just sometimes, as it can take 9-12 months for a very healthy and young couple while trying to conceive after tubal reversal. You have to think positively, rest properly, eat well, exercise consistently and monitor your ovulation patterns using as many methods as possible.

I just came across your story. My husband and I also had a son in 2007. On 4/7/07 we welcomed our son, Wyatt, into our lives. I also had a tubal ligation (something I didn't really want, but based my decision on what my doctor didn't tell me). We lost him unexpectedly on 4/13/07. We so want to try to have another baby. I have sent a couple emails to Julie, in hopes she will share our story with Dr. Berger and he will be able to help us. But due to one of their guidelines, our hopes and dreams may just end there. We so need this to be able to move forward with our lives. We both feel that Dr. Berger is our only chance in doing this. It has taken me a longtime to log on and share my journey. But I am very glad that I had the Tubal Reversal now as my body is getting back to normal before my tubal ligation. Before I experienced everything from pain, to low sex drive, to major mood swings, and long lasting menstrual cycles. Sine my reversal surgery 3/20/09 my cycles are back to normal 3-5 days tops, the pain is minimal if at all, and all is working very well. My only stress is I wanted to be pregnant by now, but that is just me dealing with my lack of patience. But I have to say to everyone at Chapel Hill Surgical Center me and my fiance experience was great. We even talked about moving to Chapel Hill as we were treated so very well, and enjoyed the scenery. I just wanted to say thanks to Dr Berger for all he does in the field of work. As you may have heard it many times over, Thank you. I believe your practice is blessed because you bless so many. So hopefully next sometime I can be telling everyone about our new addition that you through your passion for fertility have given to us. This was the best medical experience I have ever had!!!

SAMANTHA – Endometrial ablation increases the risks of miscarriage, premature delivery, ectopic pregnancy, and possible fetal abnormalities if pregnancy occurs. It also diminishes the chances of becoming pregnant. These risks occur if the endometrium has become scarred or damaged permanently. In some cases, however, the endometrium grows back and is normal, in which case the risks of complications associated with pregnancy are probably not increased. Having very light period suggests that your endometrium has not completely grown back. You could have your doctor perform a vaginal ultrasound exam to look at the endometrial development in the latter half of your menstrual cycle and/or have a diagnostic hysteroscopy to see if there are adhesions or areas within the uterus where the endometrium has not regenerated. If these tests are normal, then your risks would not likely be higher than for someone who has not had an endometrial ablation.

I had an endometrial ablation 4 years ago. My periods are very light and brown now but I do still have one. I talked to my OB about getting pregnant and she said its ok after 4 years b/c the endometrium grows back. I see you have told others its OK. Are there a lot of risks involved? I got pregnant with my first 2 the first month I tried and had no complications. Does the ablation make my risks much higher?

From a surgical point of view, yes – your tubes can be reversed. With 9 kids already, some might question the advisablility of having a tubal ligation reversal.

Lea Many woman will ask this question. Although it is possible to naturally become pregnant after a tubal ligation without any type of procedure, many of this pregnancies will be ectopic (tubal pregnancies). The best way to become pregnant after you have tubes tied is to have a tubal reversal.

I have been praying for a baby for over 5 years..I am 47 and had my tubes tied after my third child in 1991. My husband of 8 years had a vasectomy 20 years ago. We have been praying for a miracle. We raise our 8 year old grandson, but really feel in our hearts for another baby. We believe in miracles beyond miracles. I just keep praying God fixes both of us because we really don't have the income right now to fix us both. We believe God can fix us, but we also believe in the use of doctors. My youngest son Travis passed away at 14 in 2006. We had discussed and prayed before his passing so this baby would not be a replacement, as no one can replace my Travis. God bless all of you and I will continue to pray. I actually have a new car seat, pink bible scripture baby quilt, dress, and mommy, daughter bracelet, a lot of faith. If it is to come to pass, than it will, if not than that will be Gods Will. I will check into my insurance though to see if it is possible, with God all things are possible. God Bless all of you.

Tina T Having your tubes unclipped- or a tubal ligation reversal - would be your best choice. Insemination will not help you become pregnant because your tubes are blocked. Insemination only puts sperm into your uterus. Since your tubes are blocked the sperm will never be able to reach the egg. IVF would allow you to have another child. IVF does have IVF risks. IVF costs between $9-12,000 and the average chance of success is 35%. Tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center costs less and average success is 70%. Thank you for your message, which I will relay to Tina when I hear back from her. To date, she has had only 1 serum HCG assay since her doctor has not followed our early pregnancy testing recommendations. She has not yet had an ultrasound exam. I had a third child whom I was a surrogate for. I hemorrhaged at 35 weeks to the point that the doctor took me to the OR for an emergency hysterectomy. The thing is that I never had the hysterectomy. They were able to stop the bleeding but told my husband at the time that if I got pregnant again that I could die. He signed the consent for me to have a tubal. I didn’t know about it until I had my first period after the baby. I thought I had a hysterectomy. I was never told about it until I talked to the doctor. Now I am with a man that I love dearly and can’t have children with him. A spouse or parent should not be allowed to give informed consent for tubal ligation as it is not life threatening.

Linda It is very possible to have a reversal and become pregnant at the age of 37. You should send us the records from your tubal ligation and/or call and speak with a tubal reversal nurse at (919) 968-4656. Many patients will come for reversal without their records. Some patients will choose our screening laparoscopy procedure. This allows us to look at the tubes and see if they are repairable before making an abdominal incision.

Hello I am 37 years old. I had my tubes cut and burnt in 1994. I have two older children. My husband lost his only son in 2007. He wants a child and so do I. T Alston You should see your doctor to be evaluated for other medical conditions which could cause these symptoms. If no easy explanation is found or if you would like to become pregnant again then you should consider tubal reversal surgery.

I wish I had known about the side effects prior to undergoing tubal ligation surgery. I had my procedure done in 2000. Since then I have experienced extreme bloating, sharp pains in my pelvic area, severe mood swings, anxiety, depression, night sweats, can't sleep at night, itching and rashes, and the list goes on. I have been doing research and finally found out about PTLS. I was relieved to know that I wasn't losing my mind. Do I consult my regular Ob/gyn about this or do I need to make an appointment to see a specialist?

Essure reversal requires a tubouterine implantation procedure. The pregnancy success rate of this procedure is approximately 57%.

The alternative way to obtain pregnancy is IVF. IVF is approximately 35% for each IVF cycle attempted.

Smoking and age do not increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. The risk of ectopic pregnancy are increased by anything which changes the natural function of the fallopian tubes, namely pelvic infection and pelvic surgery.

It is possible to have IVF as long as you have a uterus. Even if both fallopian tubes are removed then IVF can be done. IVF does have risks. Anyone considering IVF should read our blog: Tubal Reversal After 40: IVF Risks .
