Great article and a good start. It is so important that take care of your body all the time and not just sometimes, as it can take 9-12 months for a very healthy and young couple while trying to conceive after tubal reversal. You have to think positively, rest properly, eat well, exercise consistently and monitor your ovulation patterns using as many methods as possible.

You have helped me realize what it may cost me emotionally and physically. I am not ready to pay the price, especially because I have been suffering from multiple health problems. I just came across your story. My husband and I also had a son in 2007. On 4/7/07 we welcomed our son, Wyatt, into our lives. I also had a tubal ligation (something I didn't really want, but based my decision on what my doctor didn't tell me). We lost him unexpectedly on 4/13/07. We so want to try to have another baby. I have sent a couple emails to Julie, in hopes she will share our story with Dr. Berger and he will be able to help us. But due to one of their guidelines, our hopes and dreams may just end there. We so need this to be able to move forward with our lives. We both feel that Dr. Berger is our only chance in doing this. My heart goes out to you and the loss of your son, as someone who knows the pain it brings on a daily basis. Best wishes for you and your family.

It has taken me a longtime to log on and share my journey. But I am very glad that I had the Tubal Reversal now as my body is getting back to normal before my tubal ligation. Before I experienced everything from pain, to low sex drive, to major mood swings, and long lasting menstrual cycles. Sine my reversal surgery 3/20/09 my cycles are back to normal 3-5 days tops, the pain is minimal if at all, and all is working very well. My only stress is I wanted to be pregnant by now, but that is just me dealing with my lack of patience. But I have to say to everyone at Chapel Hill Surgical Center me and my fiance experience was great. We even talked about moving to Chapel Hill as we were treated so very well, and enjoyed the scenery. I just wanted to say thanks to Dr Berger for all he does in the field of work. As you may have heard it many times over, Thank you. I believe your practice is blessed because you bless so many. So hopefully next sometime I can be telling everyone about our new addition that you through your passion for fertility have given to us. This was the best medical experience I have ever had!!!

SAMANTHA – Endometrial ablation increases the risks of miscarriage, premature delivery, ectopic pregnancy, and possible fetal abnormalities if pregnancy occurs. It also diminishes the chances of becoming pregnant. These risks occur if the endometrium has become scarred or damaged permanently. In some cases, however, the endometrium grows back and is normal, in which case the risks of complications associated with pregnancy are probably not increased. Having very light period suggests that your endometrium has not completely grown back. You could have your doctor perform a vaginal ultrasound exam to look at the endometrial development in the latter half of your menstrual cycle and/or have a diagnostic hysteroscopy to see if there are adhesions or areas within the uterus where the endometrium has not regenerated. If these tests are normal, then your risks would not likely be higher than for someone who has not had an endometrial ablation.

I had an endometrial ablation 4 years ago. My periods are very light and brown now but I do still have one. I talked to my OB about getting pregnant and she said its ok after 4 years b/c the endometrium grows back. I see you have told others its OK. Are there a lot of risks involved? I got pregnant with my first 2 the first month I tried and had no complications. Does the ablation make my risks much higher?

I have been praying for a baby for over 5 years..I am 47 and had my tubes tied after my third child in 1991. My husband of 8 years had a vasectomy 20 years ago. We have been praying for a miracle. We raise our 8 year old grandson, but really feel in our hearts for another baby. We believe in miracles beyond miracles. I just keep praying God fixes both of us because we really don't have the income right now to fix us both. We believe God can fix us, but we also believe in the use of doctors. My youngest son Travis passed away at 14 in 2006. We had discussed and prayed before his passing so this baby would not be a replacement, as no one can replace my Travis. God bless all of you and I will continue to pray. I actually have a new car seat, pink bible scripture baby quilt, dress, and mommy, daughter bracelet, a lot of faith. If it is to come to pass, than it will, if not than that will be Gods Will. I will check into my insurance though to see if it is possible, with God all things are possible. God Bless all of you.

Tina T Having your tubes unclipped- or a tubal ligation reversal - would be your best choice. Insemination will not help you become pregnant because your tubes are blocked. Insemination only puts sperm into your uterus. Since your tubes are blocked the sperm will never be able to reach the egg. IVF would allow you to have another child. IVF does have IVF risks. IVF costs between $9-12,000 and the average chance of success is 35%. Tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center costs less and average success is 70%. To date, she has had only 1 serum HCG assay since her doctor has not followed our early pregnancy testing recommendations. She has not yet had an ultrasound exam. I had a third child whom I was a surrogate for. I hemorrhaged at 35 weeks to the point that the doctor took me to the OR for an emergency hysterectomy. The thing is that I never had the hysterectomy. They were able to stop the bleeding but told my husband at the time that if I got pregnant again that I could die. He signed the consent for me to have a tubal. I didn’t know about it until I had my first period after the baby. I thought I had a hysterectomy. I was never told about it until I talked to the doctor. Now I am with a man that I love dearly and can’t have children with him. A spouse or parent should not be allowed to give informed consent for tubal ligation as it is not life threatening.

Some patients will choose our screening laparoscopy procedure. This allows us to look at the tubes and see if they are repairable before making an abdominal incision.

I wish I had known about the side effects prior to undergoing tubal ligation surgery. I had my procedure done in 2000. Since then I have experienced extreme bloating, sharp pains in my pelvic area, severe mood swings, anxiety, depression, night sweats, can't sleep at night, itching and rashes, and the list goes on. I have been doing research and finally found out about PTLS. I was relieved to know that I wasn't losing my mind. Do I consult my regular Ob/gyn about this or do I need to make an appointment to see a specialist?

The alternative way to obtain pregnancy is IVF. IVF is approximately 35% for each IVF cycle attempted.

Smoking and age do not increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. The risk of ectopic pregnancy are increased by anything which changes the natural function of the fallopian tubes, namely pelvic infection and pelvic surgery.

It is possible to have IVF as long as you have a uterus. Even if both fallopian tubes are removed then IVF can be done. IVF does have risks. Anyone considering IVF should read our blog: Tubal Reversal After 40: IVF Risks .

Two more questions:
Does smoking or age increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy?
If an ectopic pregnancy does occur and the fallopian tubes have to be removed is still possible to have IVF?

Maria The risk of ectopic pregnancy in the general population is 1-3%. The risk of ectopic pregnancy among women who have IVF is 1-3%. The risk of ectopic pregnancy among women with tubal reversal is 10-15%. There is nothing that can be done to change the risk of ectopic pregnancy. We do recommend monitoring early pregnancies and if they are ectopic then ending the pregnancy with a medication called methotrexate, which can avoid the most serious problems with an ectopic pregnancy.

Hi I had my tubal sterilisation by bilateral method 8 years ago when I was 27 and now my husband and myself want another child badly. I was made to do this under difficult circumstances and was told that I could always reverse that If we needed another baby, but never was advised what tubal reversal would cost or about the success rates. I feel so guilty now and regret that decision. I very badly want to get my tubal ligation reversed and have another baby. We live in New Zealand and not sure who does it here. I also had the Essure done to myself when I was 33 years old. I was married into an abusive husband, so I decided to get this procedure done. He wanted more kids, but I didn't any from him. Now I met a wonderful man who I am engaged too. He really wants us to have a baby, but I was also told that Essure was not reversible. I should have asked more questions about this procedure, but because I didn't want to have any more children from ex-husband I thought it was the best thing for me. I didn't want to bring another child in this world with the abuse that I was getting. Now I do regret it because I want to give my fiance a baby. I agree with the ladies that complain about pain after the procedure with the Filshie Clips. I have regretted having the tubal ligation performed and I would never recommend this as a form of birth control. I am now researching tubal ligation reversal so my happiness and well being can be restored.
