I have been looking into Tubal Reversal. I am finding everything from 8,000 to 14,000. I think his pricing is reasonable. How can He do it at this low cost? I am really checking this doctor out. I am now trying to find if other doctors recommend Dr. Gary Berger.
Thanks in Advance

Wanting a Third~ If you read into Dr. Berger's website you'll be sure to find all of the reasons he can keep his costs so low. I know that one of the reasons is because of him specializing in doing ONLY tubal ligation reversals, and having the whole procedure performed in his out patient facility, (saving you the cost of a hospital stay, which is probably why the prices you have from other Dr's. seem so much higher) they're including the hospital stay I'm sure. Hope this helps and I'm sure you'll get other reasons why his fees are so much more reasonable than others.
Love,
Kris

I am glad that you find our costs low, but our fees are actually quite reasonable and customary for this procedure. The main reason some facilities have to charge much more than the usual and customary fee is probably related to lack of experience performing tubal reversal surgery, which translates into a 2 - 3 day hospitalization. Increased costs can also be associated with longer surgery time, which is also an indication of less experience with the procedure. To perform any surgery as an outpatient procedure, certain criteria must be met: 1) You must be able to control bleeding. When Dr. Berger performs TR surgery, typical blood loss is around 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon.
2) You must be able to control pain with oral pain medications. Our patients are up and dressing themselves 1 - 2 hours after surgery and are sent home with oral pain meds. This is a result of his use of local anesthetic in the skin, muscle and tissues and avoiding the use of heavy retractors. If pain is so intense that IV pain meds are needed, the patient must remain in the hospital.
3) You must be able to avoid nausea and vomiting. Our anesthesiologists administer anesthesia for TR surgery 4 times a day, 5 days per week. The combination of medications, as well as the anesthesia techniques they use, minimize post-op nausea and vomiting and the need for continuing IV fluids. When a doctor has limited experience performing TR surgery, anesthesia times are prolonged leading to increased nausea and vomiting and increased bleeding and pain. Our procedure takes one hour to perform, while a doctor with less experience may take 3 - 4 hours to perform the surgery. This leads to an increased risk of the complications I mentioned above. I hope this information is helpful! We see many women who come to Dr. Berger after being referred by the local OB-GYN doctor. Many of the ladies here will probably share their stories with you as well. Best wishes, Julia Smith RN

Wanting a Third--
While I haven't been to Chape Hill YET (we leave today-our surgery is on Friday), I have been nothing but impressed with Dr. Berger's entire setup. His staff has been exceptional thus far. I researched various facilities before deciding on Dr. Berger and am very confident that he is the top choice. I spoke with my family physician, my ob, and several other friends of mine, that are doctors in various fields, regarding Dr. Berger. They were all impressed with how many TR's he had performed, how far people traveled to be a patient of his and his outcome statistics. The nurses response below really hits on a big issue that I ran across--most places that I checked into were NOT exclusively focused on TR, but infertility instead. Most places only do a couple of TR's a week (if that).
I know that for my husband and I, we were both comforted and impressed with all of Dr. Berger's credentials and have found nothing but praise for him no matter where we check. Good Luck as you make your decision.

Hi Wanting a Third, don't beat yourself up for asking that, I wondered too. I live in Ohio and checked several places online and in Columbus, OH. Online was cheaper of course but Ohio State University hospital wanted almost $20,000 to do a TR. WOW! It really makes sense though, Dr. Berger does large amounts of TR surgeries so he prob. has the surgery down to a T and you know what they say " time is money" At least that is what we say in the hair business! I have not had my TR yet but have been impressed with the staff so far, very friendly and answer questions promptly. After lots of reading and talking on this message board my mind has been put at ease. I understand though how traveling to a doctor you have never seen or heard about can be a little disconcerting (spell that right?). Anyway, enough of me rambling...good luck with your decision! Bren

Wanting a Third, I, too, did a lot of research before chosing Dr. B. I am an ER nurse, one who is very picky about doctors and my and my family's health care. I did find some that were comparably priced, in the 6000-7000 range and some that were much higher. It does have to do with the setting of the surgery, outpatient being less expensive. I was impressed with the statistics available on the website, something I could not find for most doctors, and those who did have stats were not as good. After reading the message board and hearing the positive experiences of others and all the pregnancy reports, I decided to fax my report. Jennifer called me back a few hours later and was so nice, answering all my questions. Everyone I have talked to there has been helpful and on the ball--something not common enough these days. I haven't had my surgery yet--13 days away still, but I think I've made the best choice--I'll let you know after! Becky

I chose Dr. Berger and my sister chose a local doctor that quoted one price, and then she was billed from the hospital, had operating room fees and an anesthesiology bill. Her total was approximately $20,000 and no bfp yet. I had 2 tr's and my cost wasnt anywhere near that. I would recommend Dr. Berger to anyone who asked me. I was in the hospital Tues & Wed and every nurse that came in my room said they read my chart and wanted to know who did my TR. I proudly said Dr. Berger. Good luck on your decision.

Before finding Dr. Berger's website, I of course did what most of you probably did, I checked with my regular OB/GYN to find out if he could refer me to a Dr. that did TR's. Well, my Dr. told me that there was a DR in his office that did TR's and asked him to come and talk to me. Well, when this DR came to talk with me about the TR that I so badly wanted, said, "Well, I will do your TR, however I don't particularly (sp?) like doing them." I thought NO WAY in !@#$ am I going to have a DR do my TR that "doesn't like to do them"
Now, the cost of this TR by this DR was going to cost $4,000.00. After going to Dr. Berger and having the experience I had with him and his staff, I would have gladly paid 3 times the amount to have had him perform it.

I am from MN. I am 35 and cannot afford the surgery. Any resources would be greatly appreciated. I do not qualify for a loan. Please help. I am desperate for this surgery

There are some programs that a few of the women speak about but you pay a fee every month and they take the lady that is first on the list and then go down so it can take years before you get to have your surgery.Dr Berger does offer a payment plan where you can pay each month and then have your TR when you have saved enough to pay for the surgery.I would recommend the payment plan with Dr Berger but hopefully some of the other ladies will chime in and offer some advice.Best of luck

I am from Ohio too and I, like many of you did, shopped around. I was in shock when I heard some of the prices. One doctor who was rather close to me, his fees were around $1,500.00. I thought "OK-that is not so bad"...but then that was just HIS fee. That did not include the consultation, the facility, Anesthesiologist's and nurse anesthetist's fees, NOTHING. So, I called the hospital to see what their fee was and they said "around" $13,000. Just to use their facility. I searched and searched the internet and kept coming back to Dr. Berger. After having our consulation with him, DH & I felt and KNEW we were where we needed to be and we chose the right place. You are not going to find a better staff and receive the attention that you will at Chapel Hill. If I had to do all over again...I would without a doubt be at CHAPEL HILL!!! Tina
