Diagnostic Laparoscopy

Screening laparoscopy package

The lengths and health of the fallopian tube after a tubal ligation procedure depend upon the type of ligation and the surgeon who performed the procedure. Dr. Berger routinely reviews a copy of the operative report from your tubal ligation in order to determine the amount of tube that has been damaged by the sterilization operation.

If you cannot get a copy of your tubal ligation operative report or if it is inconclusive, Dr. Berger can begin your surgery with diagnostic laparoscopy to examine your fallopian tubes and determine if tubal reversal is possible. If so, he will repair your tubes right then. If your tubal ligation has severely damaged your tubes and Dr. Berger does not repair them, you will be given a partial refund. The "laparoscopy package" is excellent insurance in situations when the type of tubal ligation is unknown.

Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center offers the screening laparoscopy to any patient interested in more of an assurance regarding the outcome of the reversal surgery. Screening laparoscopy is recommended - but not required - in cases where the amount of tube remaining is questionable, such as after monopolar tubal coagulation at multiple sites along the tube.

The screening laparoscopy procedure is performed while you are under anesthesia and just prior to the reversal. That way you do not have to undergo anesthesia and surgery twice. Dr. Berger will examine your fallopian tubes with the laparoscope and, if sufficient tubal lengths remain, go directly to tubal repair. You will discuss your wishes regarding all of this with Dr. Berger during your initial consultation so that he will be familiar with how you might want to proceed before beginning the operation. There is an additional charge of $1000 to add the screening laparoscopy, but with this option you will receive close to 50% of the total surgery fee in refund should tubal repair not be possible. If there is enough tube remaining to complete the repair, Dr. Berger will perform your tubal reversal while you are under anesthesia. He always repairs both tubes if possible. If only one is possible he will repair one as it is possible to conceive with only one tube.

The screening laparoscopy package is offered to patients with a BMI (body mass index) of less than 30.
