Post Tubal Syndrome
Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is a term that has been used to refer to a variety of symptoms that appear following a tubal ligation. Most often these have included heavy menstrual flow, irregular bleeding, painful menstruation, increased moodiness, headaches, breast tenderness, and a variety of other hormonal symptoms.
Whether or not this is a "true" syndrome has been a subject of controversy in medical circles for decades. The majority of the opinion of medical experts seems to be that it is not a true syndrome. According to this opinion, the appearance of new symptoms following a tubal ligation is a coincidence and is not caused by the tubal ligation procedure. This opinion is based on some studies that report similar symptom rates among women who have had a tubal ligation and others who have not.
The contrary opinion, that Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is real, is held by many women who have developed problems after a tubal ligation that did not occur previously. Further, women who have undergone tubal reversal surgery frequently report relief from their symptoms. These findings argue against post tubal ligation symptoms being a coincidence.
