Cost

The discounted cost for tubal reversal surgery is $5,900. To qualify for the discounted cost, payment must be made within 24 hours of scheduling your surgery. The standard fee of $6,900 does not require payment at the time of scheduling but must be paid no later than 3 weeks before your procedure. For either option, payment can be made by cashier's check, money order, bank wire transfer, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover). Both standard and discounted fees are all-inclusive and cover Dr. Berger's professional fee, the anesthesiologist's fee, medications and supplies, operating room charges and facility fees, initial consultation with Dr. Berger and long term follow-up.

Pre-payment plan

For patients preferring to make long-term payment arrangements, we offer a pre-payment plan. With this option, patients can pre-pay the surgical fee in increments without interest prior to the surgery date. To utilize this option, a non-refundable $250 fee is mailed to us at: Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, 109 Conner Drive, Suite 2200, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514 ATTN: Pre-Payment Plan. Upon receipt of this initial payment, an account will be opened in your name and you can make further payments of any amount whenever you desire. You are welcome to schedule your tubal reversal at any time. For the standard fee, you do not have to wait until the balance is paid to schedule surgery. However, it is due at least three weeks prior to the surgery date. You can choose the discounted fee while using the pre-payment plan, but the balance must be paid in full prior to scheduling surgery.

Insurance

Some insurance companies provide coverage for tubal ligation reversal. The procedure code is 58750. If your insurance policy shows this to be a covered procedure, it is advisable to obtain pre-certification and authorization from your insurance carrier prior to surgery to increase your chances of successful reimbursement. Should your insurance cover reversal surgery, you are responsible for payment prior to surgery and filing for reimbursement after the procedure has been performed. We will provide you with an encounter form and copy of your operative report for you to send to your insurance carrier when you file for reimbursement.

Risks

The primary risk associated with tubal ligation reversal is the long term possibility of ectopic pregnancy (approximately 10-15% vs 3-5% in the general population). If an ectopic pregnancy is allowed to progress for too long, the tube can rupture and result in internal bleeding and the need for surgery. By following our guidelines for early pregnancy monitoring, ectopic pregnancy can be diagnosed within 2 weeks after a missed menstrual period and treated medically to avoid tubal rupture or the need for surgical intervention. As part of the follow-up care that we offer, we ask that patients inform us as soon as they have a positive pregnancy test via our on-line pregnancy report form. This allows Dr. Berger and our nurses to help monitor early pregnancies with patients and their local physicians.

Treatment options

The only other option for pregnancy after tubal ligation is in vitro fertilization (IVF). Tubal reversal surgery is the better choice for most women. Tubal reversal allows for the chance of pregnancy to occur naturally each month. With IVF, each time pregnancy is attempted medications must be administered by injection and eggs retrieved from the ovaries. Based on national IVF statistics, the pregnancy rate is higher after tubal reversal than IVF. IVF is more expensive ($6,000 to $15,000 for each cycle of treatment) than reversal surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.
