What to Expect Before, During, and After Tubal Reversal Surgery
These pages will help you know what to expect when you come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for your tubal ligation reversal surgery.
Weeks Before Tubal Reversal Surgery:
Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Nuprin, Aleve or any products containing these medications, diet pills, or any herbal remedies (including drinking green tea) for Three weeks prior to surgery. These medications can interfere with your blood's clotting properties and blood pressure. If you need to take a pain reliever during the 3 weeks before surgery, plain acetaminophen (Tylenol) is safe to take.
Continue Taking any daily medications that have been prescribed by your physician (for example blood pressure, thyroid, antidepressant medications) as usual unless instructed otherwise by our anesthesiologist.
If you are prescribed any new medications, dosage changes, or discontinue taking any medications at any time prior to your surgery, please notify our anesthesia department immediately.
Beginning three days prior to your surgery, please wash your entire abdominal area with HIBICLENS® soap once a day. HIBICLENS® is an antiseptic antimicrobial skin cleanser possessing bactericidal properties that may be purchased at a drugstore.
If you are having a screening laparoscopy, please wash in and around your belly button with HIBICLENS® soap as well.
Three days prior to your ligation reversal surgery remove artificial nails and fingernail polish. Beginning three days prior to surgery, scrub fingernails once each day using HIBICLENS® soap.
Beginning three days prior to your reversal surgery, please do not shave your pubic hair.
Purchase a thermometer, if you do not already have one, and bring it with you to Chapel Hill.
Purchase a bottle of ibuprofen 200 mg tablets (like Advil or Motrin) and bring it with you to Chapel Hill. Again, do not take ibuprofen for 3 weeks prior to surgery.
Purchase a box of Zantac tablets (either 75 mg or 150 mg tablets). This is an over-the-counter medication that can be purchased without a prescription at a drugstore or grocery store.
Consultation:
During the consultation, you will review and sign consent forms as well as discuss risks of surgery. The nurse will obtain your height and weight to evaluate BMI (body mass index) status. We will also perform a vaginal ultrasound examination to assess the uterus and ovaries for any condition that might affect your fertility.
The Night Prior To Tubal Reversal Surgery:
Take Zantac 150 mg before going to bed. Do not eat anything after 10:00pm. You may continue to have clear, non-carbonated liquids (water, apple juice, lemonade (without pulp), tea (no herbal teas before surgery), white grape juice) until two hours before surgery. Please call the nurse on call before 8 pm the night before surgery if you have any questions about acceptable clear liquids.
