Charles W. Monteith M.D.
Medical Director

Dr. Monteith is the Medical Director of A Personal Choice. He is a fertility surgeon who has been in practice since 2001. He has dedicated his career to helping both women and couples through corrective microsurgical tubal surgery.

Dr. Monteith’s career in corrective tubal surgery began in 2008. After completing a microsurgery training course at the Cleveland Clinic and a six month training mentorship in tubal ligation reversal surgery under Dr. Gary Berger, Dr. Monteith began to exclusively specialize in fertility surgery.

Since 2008, Dr. Monteith has gained extensive expertise in reversing all types of tubal ligations and in repairing blocked fallopian tubes caused by gynecological diseases.

Dr. Monteith has the distinct privilege of being the first surgeon in the world to report successful pregnancy within the peer reviewed medical literature after reversal of transcervical hysteroscopic tubal sterilization.

Professional Background

Dr. Monteith graduated from college in the top three of his class and with honors from Xavier University of Louisiana. He attended medical school at the prestigious University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, which was consistently ranked among the top four medical schools in the United States by national surveys. While at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Monteith received a prestigious Howard Hughes research fellowship to research molecular genetics.

He completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his residency, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. After completing residency in 2001, Dr. Monteith accepted a Clinical Assistant Professorship with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During his tenure as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Monteith served in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, N.C. and practiced obstetrics and advanced surgical gynecology. He continued teaching residents and medical students in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology, participated in a private obstetrics practice, and delivered babies and helped care for many high-risk pregnancies. He developed extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery and the surgical treatment of advanced gynecologic diseases. Dr. Monteith brings with him the experience of providing over ten years of obstetrical care and this allows him to better counsel tubal surgery patients about pregnancy concerns before his patients have tubal reversal surgery.

Dr. Monteith is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and by virtue of his board certification Dr. Monteith possesses special knowledge, skills and professional capability in the medical and surgical care of women related to pregnancy and disorders of the female reproductive system.

Dr. Monteith left his successful practice in obstetrics and gynecology after seven years. He felt his true calling as a physician was in using his skills to help those who other doctors would not or could not help. He felt his true calling as a surgeon was in using his skills to perform procedures, which make significant differences in his patient’s lives. This is his view of what it truly means to be both a physician and a surgeon.

History of A Personal Choice

Dr. Monteith joined Dr. Berger’s staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as a tubal ligation reversal specialist in 2008. After five years and over 1200 tubal surgeries, Dr. Monteith was promoted to the Medical Director of the reversal center in 2013.

In 2014, Dr. Monteith relocated the specialty center to its current location in Raleigh, North Carolina. This move provided his tubal surgery patients a newer surgical facility, better hotel accommodations, outstanding access to restaurants and shopping, and closer access to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Dr. Monteith used this move as an opportunity for a new beginning and he renamed the practice A Personal Choice because he believes all patients should have the ability to make personal choices about their fertility desires without the undue influences of others.

What Our Patients Are Saying

“We had our surgery on 3/18/15 and on 02/02/16 our 7 pound 11 oz baby girl was born! I’m 34 years old and had tubal ligation done via clamps 8 years prior so this surgery really does work! 8 years later I had the reversal and 9 years later we were blessed with our little girl! So many doctors tried to talk us out of it-wanted us to do IVF to get our money-however praise God we went with this because it does WORK! Dr M is amazing and his staff! The area is beautiful where his office is, and if you do this procedure it will be the best money you ever spend!”

– Charlee-Belle M., Surgery

“From the very first phone call, the staff at A Personal Choice has been amazing! They have answered our numerous questions, concerns and have been amazing. They never give you false hope, but give you the complete story. I am so happy that we chose Dr. Monteith and his staff to make our dreams a reality. Can’t wait to start trying to have a baby. – Angela W., Essure Reversal

“Excellent service overall! Each stage of the process was carefully explained in great detail: how the procedure works, what to expect during the procedure, what to expect after, possible side effects. Dr. Monteith himself is very knowledgeable and experienced and quite personable too. He has a great sense of humor and uses it generously to put patients at ease. I highly recommend him and his staff to anyone considering either a vasectomy or a vasectomy reversal.”

Chris B., Vasectomy Reversal

Hi I’m 46 years old I have regular periods I had my tubes cut in 2003 is it possible for me to have it fix to become pregnant?

    Dr. Monteith Reply

We should be able to help you with tubal reversal but it is harder to become pregnant with increasing age so I would not delay your decision for too long.

We do have many patients who become pregnant with tubal reversal after age 40. Most of the women who become pregnant after reversal are between the age of 40 and 43.

We charge $6400 total plus $125 to schedule and we are located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Please be aware that starting April 1st 2019 the fee for reversal surgery will increase to $6,900 and the scheduling fee will increase to $150. If you want to avoid the higher fees then you should schedule your surgery before April 1st or start a Reversal Prepayment Account.

Patients pay in full and out-of-pocket at the time of scheduling. All you have to pay for in addition to the surgical fee is the cost of travel, hotel, and food.

The alternative treatment is in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Most IVF doctors will recommend you use donor eggs after the age of 42. A single cycle of IVF averages $14,000 and average success is 38% for each try. After age 40 IVF success decreases quickly.

If you would like to get started then the best first step is to send us your tubal ligation records for a free review. Your tubal ligation records can be obtained from the Medical Records Department in the hospital where your tubal ligation was performed. Occasionally your doctors office may have the records. Sometimes patients may not be able to obtain their tubal ligation records. We can still proceed with surgery without records because we can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.

Our office is closed until January 2nd. Call us after January 2nd if you have any questions.

We charge $6,400 for tubal reversal surgery. Although $6,400 seems expensive…the alternative treatment in-vitro fertilization (IVF) average $12,000 to $14,000 and is about 40% successful!

Patients pay in full and out-of-pocket at the time of scheduling. All you have to pay for in addition to the surgical fee is the cost of travel, hotel, and food. Patients stay in Raleigh a total of 2 nights and 3 days. The consultation is the first day, surgery the second day, and postoperative visit is the third day.

We do have a prepayment tubal reversal plan that allows you to save towards your reversal over a 3 year period.

Please be aware starting April 1st 2019 the cost for tubal reversal surgery will increase to $6,900. The scheduling fee will increase from $125 to $150.

The main advantage to tubal reversal is that every month you have a chance and you can become pregnant more than once. On average, about 2 out of every 3 women become pregnant with tubal reversal surgery.
