Dr. Monteith graduated from college in the top three of his class and with honors from Xavier University of Louisiana. He attended medical school at the prestigious University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, which was consistently ranked among the top four medical schools in the United States by national surveys. This is his view of what it truly means to be both a physician and a surgeon.

History of A Personal Choice

Dr. Monteith joined Dr. Berger’s staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as a tubal ligation reversal specialist in 2008. After five years and over 1200 tubal surgeries, Dr. Monteith was promoted to the Medical Director of the reversal center in 2013.

In 2014, Dr. Monteith relocated the specialty center to its current location in Raleigh, North Carolina. This move provided his tubal surgery patients a newer surgical facility, better hotel accommodations, outstanding access to restaurants and shopping, and closer access to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Dr. Monteith used this move as an opportunity for a new beginning and he renamed the practice A Personal Choice because he believes all patients should have the ability to make personal choices about their fertility desires without the undue influences of others.

I had 2 normal births and my last one was a c section in 2004. My tubes were tied after the csection but that was 15 years ago. I had bad periods afterwards and the dr performed an ablation procedure shortly after. I haven’t had a period since but recently I’m wanting to have one more as my significant other doesn’t have kids of his own. I’ll be 42 end of May. Do you think a reversal would be possible for me?

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Tina
We should be able to help you with tubal reversal but it is harder to become pregnant with increasing age so I would not delay your decision for too long.

We do have many patients who become pregnant with tubal reversal after age 40. Most of the women who become pregnant after reversal are between the age of 40 and 43.

We charge $6400 total plus $125 to schedule and we are located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Please be aware that starting April 1st 2019 the fee for reversal surgery will increase to $6,900 and the scheduling fee will increase to $150. If you want to avoid the higher fees then you should schedule your surgery before April 1st or start a Reversal Prepayment Account.

Patients pay in full and out-of-pocket at the time of scheduling. All you have to pay for in addition to the surgical fee is the cost of travel, hotel, and food.

The alternative treatment is in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Most IVF doctors will recommend you use donor eggs after the age of 42. A single cycle of IVF averages $14,000 and average success is 38% for each try. After age 40 IVF success decreases quickly.

If you would like to get started then the best first step is to send us your tubal ligation records for a free review. Your tubal ligation records can be obtained from the Medical Records Department in the hospital where your tubal ligation was performed. Occasionally your doctors office may have the records. Sometimes patients may not be able to obtain their tubal ligation records. We can still proceed with surgery without records because we can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.

  2. Cora says:

Hello I’m 35 soon to be 36 and would like to have my tubes reversed, ive also have had 4 c-sections, could I be at risk? And how can I start my payments.

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Cora
We should be able to reverse your tubes. You should consider our screening laparoscopy because of your history of c-sections and the possibility of scar tissue.

We charge $6,400 for tubal reversal surgery. You should send us your records from your tubal ligation for a free review. Sometimes patients cannot get their records. Even if you cannot obtain your records we would perform tubal reversal for you because we can reverse most tubal ligations most of the time.

Please be aware starting April 1st 2019 the cost for tubal reversal surgery will increase to $6,900. The scheduling fee will increase from $125 to $150.

Tubal reversal can be 60% to 70% effective. The other treatment to become pregnant is In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) and this treatment cost averages $14,000 and is about 40% effective for each try.

Tubal reversal is possible when you have a history of multiple c-sections. We have many patients who have successful reversal and pregnancy with a history of c-sections. The biggest concern with multiple (3 or more) c-sections is the possibility of severe scar tissue. If severe scar tissue exists then reversal may not be possible.

We estimate that about 1 out of 12 women with 3 or more c-sections will have severe scar tissue that can make tubal reversal more challenging and in some cases not possible. For these patients we offer a screening laparoscopy. You can consider this similar to a surgery insurance policy.

The laparoscopy costs an additional $1,500. The screening laparoscopy fee will increase from $1,500 to $1,750.

If you choose to have a screening laparoscopy we can look with a camera during the surgery and see if you have severe scar tissue. If you have severe scar tissue we can often make a different incision…so this can increase the success of your procedure. If your tubes are not repairable or the scar tissue is too severe then we would offer you a refund of your surgical fee.

  3. Virginia says:

What is the process for a tubal reversal? I had my tubal ligation almost 10 years ago. I’m located out of state and would be willing to travel for the procedure. Thank you for your time.

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Virginia
Most of our patients travel from out of state to have surgery with us. Look at the information on our website under “Getting Started”. The most important thing to do is send us a copy of your tubal ligation operative note for a free review.

Hi, I am 38 years old. I had my tubal ligation done 3 years ago. After my surgery I was not getting my periods regularly. Than my doctor did some tests and we found out that I was menupausing. That was a shock to me because my mother menupaused after 50. I was pretty sure this was not hereditary so I asked my doctor to do some genetics test, that also came normal. After having this experience I spoke to other women in my family and they told me that they also stopped having periods after tubal ligation and they could never find out why. I am pretty sure that I am menupausing because of my tubaligation. Do you think doctor reversal surgery can get my periods back and make me normal. Please help doctor, I do not feel like myself after my tubal ligation. Please help me to be me again. Thank you!

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

You are probably not ovulating. It is rare to go through menopause at age 38. It is very common to skip ovulation as you become older or gain weight. Reversal will not make your periods return….you would need to have hormonal tests and your doctor would need to evaluate you.

If you wanted reversal and pregnancy then we could certainly do a reversal and your doctor could prescribe you Clomid…that would help you ovulate and become pregnant.

  5. Anonymous says:

I’m 38, I had my tubes cut and burn in 2013. I get my period every month for 5 days. Would I be a candidate for tubal reversal?

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

We should be able to help you. We can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.

You should send us your tubal ligation reports for a free review and we can let you know if you are a candidate for reversal surgery. Your reports can be obtained from the medical records department where your tubal ligation surgery was performed.

On average the chance of pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal is about 60% if you are under age 42.

We do have a prepayment tubal reversal plan that allows you to save towards your reversal over a 3 year period.

Although $6,400 seems expensive…the alternative treatment in-vitro fertilization (IVF) average $12,000 to $14,000 and is about 40% successful!

The main advantage to tubal reversal is that every month you have a chance and you can become pregnant more than once.
