Risks Of Tubal Reversal Surgery

safe-reversal-surgery-with Dr. MonteithAny medical procedure or surgery has risks.

We have demonstrated that tubal reversal surgery can be safely performed as an outpatient surgery.

Microsurgical tubal ligation reversal, as performed at A Personal Choice, is one of the safest surgeries with one of the lowest complication rates of all operations involving the female pelvic organs.

Reversal Surgery: Risks Of Reversing Tubes

There are two main risk related to reversal surgery: immediate surgical risks and delayed pregnancy risks.

The immediate surgical risks are anesthesia complications, major bleeding, injury to other organs, and surgical incision infections.

The delayed pregnancy risk are increased chance of ectopic (tubal) pregnancy.

Immediate Surgery Risks

A Personal Choice Complication Data

Our Quality Management team collects data on every patient and monitors reported surgical complications. Our reversal surgical complication data is as follows:

Blood Transfusion 0%
Major Incision Infections <0.5%
Minor Incision Infections <2%
Early Operative/Anesthesia complications <0.5%
Unanticipated MD Visit After Surgery <2%

Ectopic Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal

The main risk of tubal ligation reversal is the increased chance of an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy.

According to our Pregnancy Outcomes After Tubal Reversal Surgery  the ectopic pregnancy rate after tubal reversal at our center ranges from 10-15%.

Although ectopic pregnancy is a serious condition, our patients are provided an Early Pregnancy Monitoring Protocol  to follow with their local physicians. This protocol allows ectopic pregnancies to be diagnosed very early and treated with a medication called methotrexate.

Medical treatment with methotrexate can effectively treat most early ectopic pregnancies and can minimize the risks of ectopic pregnancy after reversal surgery.

Tubal Blockage After Tubal Surgery

The tubes can become blocked with scar tissue from the healing response after tubal reversal or tubal surgery. This will not happen for most women and we estimate the risk of tubal blockage after tubal surgery to be approximately 6%.

Summary: Surgical Risks Of Reversal

Tubal ligation reversal at A Personal Choice is an affordable option that allows women a chance to become every month and more than once.

There are risks to any surgery but in our experience the immediate risks of surgery at our center are small and the risk of ectopic pregnancy can be minimized by following our early pregnancy monitoring recommendations.
