Our Success Rates
Chances of Pregnancy After Surgery

When you come to A Personal Choice for tubal surgery you will be benefiting from our exclusive dedication to tubal surgery. We don’t provide vague or estimated numbers on your chance of success because we have taken the effort to collect detailed statistics on over 10,000 tubal reversal surgeries performed over the course of a decade.

As a result of our efforts, we are able to provide you with accurate information about your chances of pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal.

Although tubal reversal is more successful in women under the age of 30, our experience demonstrates pregnancy is possible at any age if you are having regular periods. This is why we don’t have a mandatory age restriction for our surgery patients.

Although tubal reversal is more successful in women who have had tubal clips or tubal rings, our experience has demonstrated any tubal ligation can be reversed and pregnancy is possible. This is why we don’t require that you have an operative note before having surgery at our center.

When most doctors believed Essure could not be successfully reversed we proved it was possible.

At A Personal Choice we understand no one can predict the future and no one can predict who will or will not become pregnant. We have worked diligently to provide statistics about tubal reversal success so our potential patients can make a more informed decision about their reproductive choices. Although we have worked hard to provide statistics and numbers to our patients, we realize each of our patients is not a number. We let our patients make the decisions they feel appropriate for themselves, their partners, and their families.

Chances of Pregnancy
After Tubal Ligation Reversal

Method Total Cases Pregnant (Number) Pregnant (Percent)
Clips 850 660 78%
Rings 1416 1070 76%
Ligation/Resection 3971 2616 66%
Coagulation 2849 1872 66%
Essure 282 89 32%
Other/unknown 849 438 52%

We have observed pregnancy after reversal of all types of tubal ligation. The chances of pregnancy are higher after reversal of tubal clips and rings but our patients also have experienced success after reversal of coagulation (tubal burning). Our patients are able to become pregnant after tubal reversal even when they have been unable to obtain their operative notes or have had unknown types of tubal ligation procedures.

Our experience has demonstrated we can successfully repair the tubes in over 98% of women who come to our center and approximately 67% (2 out of 3) of these women will become pregnant after reversal surgery.

Essure sterilization is one of the more difficult types of tubal sterilization procedures to reverse. Dr. Monteith was one of the first doctors in the world to publish within the peer reviewed medical literature reports of successful pregnancy after Essure reversal surgery.

Chances of Pregnancy
After Reversal Based On Age

Age Total Cases Pregnant (Number) Pregnant (Percent)
<30 1388 1128 81%
30-34 3758 2823 75%
35-39 3483 2262 65%
40+ 1306 443 34%

The power of tubal reversal is derived from the fact that each month you have a chance to get pregnant. Even a small chance each month added up over many months can grow to be a larger chance over time.

Younger women are more likely to become pregnant because of the greater time they allow themselves to become pregnant. Although the chance of pregnancy after tubal reversal is higher in younger women, we have observed pregnancy after tubal reversal at most ages. Our oldest confirmed patient to become naturally pregnant was 47 years of age.

Hello I was reading all about your reversal my one question is how long is your waiting list for the surgery?

      Kayla
Most patients can schedule 3 to 6 weeks from the time they call, schedule, and pay in full.

  2. Shanell says:

I had a tubal in 2005 and I’m interested in a reversal. I’m 34 both my previous pregnancies were great. Id like to know if I would be a candidate with the time being so long ago, and my age. Also I was wondering about the price and how soon we could get started if I was a good candidate.

We should be able to help you. We can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.

You should send us your tubal ligation reports for a free review and we can let you know if you are a candidate for reversal surgery. Your reports can be obtained from the medical records department where your tubal ligation surgery was performed.

We charge $6400 total plus $125 to schedule and we are located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Please be aware that starting April 1st 2019 the fee for reversal surgery will increase to $6,900 and the scheduling fee will increase to $150. If you want to avoid the higher fees then you should schedule your surgery before April 1st or start a Reversal Prepayment Account.

Patients pay in full and out-of-pocket at the time of scheduling. All you have to pay for in addition to the surgical fee is the cost of travel, hotel, and food.

On average the chance of pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal is about 60% if you are under age 42.

We do have a prepayment tubal reversal plan that allows you to save towards your reversal over a 3 year period.

Although $6,400 seems expensive…the alternative treatment in-vitro fertilization (IVF) average $12,000 to $14,000 and is about 40% successful!

The main advantage to tubal reversal is that every month you have a chance and you can become pregnant more than once.

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Sarah
We would need to see your records for your Essure insertion, HSG x-ray (if completed), and how they attempted to remove your Essure devices.

We specialize in Essure reversal and Essure removal surgery.

We can reverse Essure and give you the chance of pregnancy….or we can remove Essure and leave your tubes closed. The chance of pregnancy after Essure reversal is about 40%.

  4. Kimberly says:

I have a tubal which I believe was with burning in 2013, I recently had an ablation December of 2017 (Novasure). I have since divorced and would love to know if I could be a candidate of a reversal. I have had some light bleeding for the past couple of month for a few days.

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Kimberly
In general it is recommended that you do not become pregnant after having an ablation procedure.

Tubal reversal and pregnancy are possible if you are having regular periods of at least 3 days duration after your ablation. All pregnancies after ablation are considered high risk. Most IVF doctors will recommend using a gestational surrogate. IVF costs average $14,000 and you will have to pay the surrogate even more.

If you are not having periods then we would not consider you a candidate for reversal. There is no medical treatment to make your periods return.

Ablation will decrease the chance of pregnancy because it permanently damages the lining and muscle of the uterus.

If your periods are light then you do have some functioning endometriumm but we are not always certain if it is enough to allow for pregnancy. There is no accurate way to be certain.

We cannot provide an accurate percentage about the success of women getting pregnant after reversal with a prior ablation because there are no large scale studies looking at this. We have had women become pregnant naturally after tubal reversal with a prior ablation but don’t have a large enough group of these patients to provide meaningful statistics.

Studies looking at women who have become pregnant after ablation show that about 50% will miscarry and about 50% will have live born babies.

You should read these six articles I wrote about ablation, reversal, and the risks of pregnancy: Tubal Reversal and Ablation

The ablation will decrease the chances of pregnancy but if you are having regular monthly periods of at least three days duration then pregnancy is certainly possible. If you are not having regular periods then I would advise against a reversal because pregnancy is not likely.

In general pregnancy is not recommended after ablation because each pregnancy is at higher risk; miscarriage, growth restriction, early delivery, c-section and adherent placenta. The literature suggests pregnancies are at higher risk but many will do well.

It is possible to become pregnant after having an endometrial ablation and then a tubal reversal and have a healthy pregnancy if you are having regular periods of at least three days duration every month. Please call us at (919)977-5050 if you have any additional questions about tubal reversal.

To be considered a candidate by our office you need to be having regular periods (every month) and these periods need to last for at least three days.

All patients with ablations need a consult with me (Dr Monteith) either by phone or in person before they can schedule reversal surgery.

  5. Latrelle says:

    Hi I’m 43 years tubes tied 15years do I have a chance

    1. Dr. Monteith says:

      Latrelle
It is harder to become pregnant with increasing age so I would not delay your decision for too long.

We do have many patients who become pregnant with tubal reversal after age 40. Most of the women who become pregnant after reversal are between the age of 40 and 43.

The alternative treatment is in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Most IVF doctors will recommend you use donor eggs after the age of 42. A single cycle of IVF averages $14,000 and average success is 38% for each try. After age 40 IVF success decreases quickly.

If you would like to get started then the best first step is to send us your tubal ligation records for a free review. Your tubal ligation records can be obtained from the Medical Records Department in the hospital where your tubal ligation was performed. Occasionally your doctors office may have the records. Sometimes patients may not be able to obtain their tubal ligation records. We can still proceed with surgery without records because we can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.
