Tubal Reversal Pregnancy Study Report 2011

Study Patient Population

This report is based on 9,935 cases of tubal reversal surgery and subsequent pregnancies from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2011 at our practice, the only medical facility exclusively for tubal ligation reversal.

Women’s Ages

The women ranged in age from 20 to 51 (Figure 2). The average age was 34. The majority of women in the tubal reversal study were in their 30s.

Figure 2. Age Distribution

Tubal Ligation Methods

The type of tubal ligation procedure is one factor related to the outcome after tubal reversal surgery. The most common tubal sterilization method involved tying, cutting, and removing a segment of the fallopian tube (tubal ligation and resection). The second most common method was tubal coagulation (burning the tubes) followed in frequency by tubal occlusion with tubal rings or clips. Other procedures, including fimbriectomy (removing the end of the fallopian tube) and hysteroscopic methods (Essure or Adiana) were the least common. In cases where the patient’s operative report of the tubal ligation was not available and the method could not be determined at the time of the tubal reversal, the sterilization method was classified as unknown.

Table 2. Tubal Ligation Method

Method Number Percent
Rings 1416 14%
Clips 850 9%
Ligation/resection 3971 40%
Coagulation 2849 29%
Other/unknown 849 8%
Total 9935 100%

Meet Dr. Monteith

As a surgeon my reputation & integrity are extremely important to me. I’ve been providing new choices & new beginnings since 2008. I’ve had the distinct privilege of being the first surgeon in the world to report successful pregnancy within the peer reviewed medical literature after reversal of transcervical hysteroscopic tubal sterilization. Permanent is not forever at my practice! HAVE QUESTIONS?

What Our Patients Are Saying

“We had our surgery on 3/18/15 and on 02/02/16 our 7 pound 11 oz baby girl was born! I’m 34 years old and had tubal ligation done via clamps 8 years prior so this surgery really does work! 8 years later I had the reversal and 9 years later we were blessed with our little girl! So many doctors tried to talk us out of it-wanted us to do IVF to get our money-however praise God we went with this because it does WORK! Dr M is amazing and his staff! The area is beautiful where his office is, and if you do this procedure it will be the best money you ever spend!”

– Charlee-Belle M., Surgery

“From the very first phone call, the staff at A Personal Choice has been amazing! They have answered our numerous questions, concerns and have been amazing. They never give you false hope, but give you the complete story. I am so happy that we chose Dr. Monteith and his staff to make our dreams a reality. Can’t wait to start trying to have a baby. I would and have recommended Dr. Monteith to ANYONE wanting a tubal ligation or vasectomy reversal. Thank you all so much for giving us this chance!”

– Angela W., Essure Reversal

“Excellent service overall! Each stage of the process was carefully explained in great detail: how the procedure works, what to expect during the procedure, what to expect after, possible side effects. Dr. Monteith himself is very knowledgeable and experienced and quite personable too. He has a great sense of humor and uses it generously to put patients at ease. I highly recommend him and his staff to anyone considering either a vasectomy or a vasectomy reversal.”

Chris B., Vasectomy Reversal

Hi I am 51 and going to remarry and he has…I still have a period and was wondering if pregnancy is an option.

    Dr. Monteith Reply

If you are not having periods, especially at the age of 51, then we would not recommend reversal because the chance of pregnancy is close to zero.

I am looking to have a reversal, but had an ablasion in march 2016. I am still ovulating every single month. Is this possible for me.

    Dr. Monteith Reply

Tubal reversal and pregnancy are possible if you are having regular periods of at least 3 days duration after your ablation. All pregnancies after ablation are considered high risk.

If you are not having periods then we would not consider you a candidate for reversal. There is no medical treatment to make your periods return.

Ablation will decrease the chance of pregnancy because it permanently damages the lining and muscle of the uterus.

If your periods are light then you do have some functioning endometriumm but we are not always certain if it is enough to allow for pregnancy. There is no accurate way to be certain.

We cannot provide an accurate percentage about the success of women getting pregnant after reversal with a prior ablation because there are no large scale studies looking at this. We have had women become pregnant naturally after tubal reversal with a prior ablation but don’t have a large enough group of these patients to provide meaningful statistics.

Studies looking at women who have become pregnant after ablation show that about 50% will miscarry and about 50% will have live born babies.

You should read these six articles I wrote about ablation, reversal, and the risks of pregnancy: Tubal Reversal and Ablation

The ablation will decrease the chances of pregnancy but if you are having regular monthly periods of at least three days duration then pregnancy is certainly possible. If you are not having regular periods then I would advise against a reversal because pregnancy is not likely.

In general pregnancy is not recommended after ablation because each pregnancy is at higher risk; miscarriage, growth restriction, early delivery, c-section and adherent placenta. The literature suggest that pregnancies are high risk but many will do well. It is possible to become pregnant after tubal reversal and have a healthy pregnancy if you are having regular periods of at least three days duration every month. Please call us at (919)968-4656 if you have any additional questions about tubal reversal.

All patients with ablations need a consult with me (Dr Monteith) either by phone or in person before they can schedule reversal surgery.

I have a blocked right tube from a ectopic pregnancy. If this can be repaired I would be able to conceive been seeing a fertility specialist no luck on inseminations this time my blocked side is my dominant ovary that keeps ovulating. I am 38 years old and just want one more child can this be possible? Also I have mild case of endometriosis and when my blocked tube ovulate I’m in a lot of pain.

    Dr. Monteith Reply

If you have at least one tube open you should be able to become pregnant. You should send us the records from your treatment of your ectopic pregnancy and we can let you know if we can help you. Call us at (919)968-4656 if you have questions.
