Post Tubal Ligation Symptoms
What are the symptoms of PTLS?

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is a syndrome of symptoms reported by some women after having a tubal ligation procedure. Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is also referred to as PTLS.

Tubal ligation is often listed as the cause of this syndrome reported by some after getting their tubes tied. A list of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome symptoms can be quite extensive.

Women who experience Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome symptoms report symptoms which range from mild to severe and these symptoms can be extensive.

What Is Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

If a woman does notice symptoms after tubal ligation most of the commonly reported symptoms are limited to the pelvis and involve changes in the menstrual cycle or pelvic discomfort.

PTLS symptoms are more wide-spread and involve other areas of the body not commonly associated with female reproductive organs.

Women with Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome symptoms often report extensive symptoms involving many different areas of the body. These symptoms can include migraines, joint pains, hair and nail changes, skin changes, abdominal pain, and many other symptoms.

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome: What are the symptoms?

Although most women will not experience any symptoms after a tubal ligation some women will report tubal ligation side effects. The most common side effects attributed to tubal ligation are isolated to the uterus and pelvis.

The more serious, extensive, and systemic tubal ligation problems are often classified as Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome.

There are many attributed Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome symptoms. The most predominant symptoms are:

  • Heavier periods
  • Painful periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Insomnia
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Memory changes
  • Headaches
  • Brittle nails
  • Hair loss
  • Feelings of dread/apprehension
  • Itchy skin
  • Joint pains
  • Vertigo/dizziness

The symptoms above are the primary symptoms associated with Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome but there are many more attributable symptoms.

What causes Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome?

PTLS is thought to occur as a direct result of having a tubal ligation. The actual cause of PTLS is unknown. Some have speculated tubal ligation causes disruption of the blood supply underneath the tube and this causes dysfunction of the ovary and alterations in ovarian hormone production. Most current research suggests tubal ligation has no adverse effect on ovarian hormone production.

The existence of PTLS is controversial and many health care providers are not supportive of the diagnosis. It is often believed women who are claiming to have PTLS may have secondary gain (other intentions).

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome: What is the Treatment?

We do have patients who have tubal reversal surgery and report many of the above symptoms. Many of this women will have normal findings at the time of surgery but over 90% will report improvement after tubal reversal. Approximately 10% will report no change in their symptoms and a diagnosis of another medical condition will be the cause for their symptoms.

For many of our patients we are uncertain why tubal reversal seems to help but it is hard to ignore their reports of improvement.
