Tubal Ligation Symptoms
Our Experience

Tubal ligation symptoms can be experienced by some women after having their tubes tied.

Most women will not experience a problem after tubal ligation but some will have abnormal side effects. There are no reliable statistics on what percentage of women will experience tubal ligation symptoms.

Most of our patients request tubal reversal surgery to restore fertility, but some request tubal surgery to be evaluated and treated for tubal ligation symptoms.

We treat a select group of patients. Over 90% of our patients who have tubal reversal as a treatment for tubal ligation symptoms will report improvement after having tubal reversal surgery.

Tubal ligation symptoms: What are they?

The most common symptoms after tubal ligation are heavier periods, increased cramping with periods, more bloating and, sometimes, pelvic discomfort.

Some women report more involved symptoms after tubal ligation; pelvic pain, weight gain, depression, bloating, and decreased sex drive.

Others report more extensive, generalized bodily symptoms and this constellation of systemic symptoms is often referred to as Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS).

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome Symptoms

The existence of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is extremely controversial and many health professionals are not supportive of the diagnosis. Health insurance companies do not recognize Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome as a valid diagnosis and will not reimburse patients for any procedures performed for a PTLS diagnosis.

Tubal ligation side effects: Does tubal ligation cause problems?

Does tubal ligation cause problems? In our experience this can be a complicated question to answer. Most women who have a tubal ligation will not have any problems.

Some women who have problems after tubal ligation have problems which are associated with tubal ligation but not caused by tubal ligation. This can be a complicated concept to understand, so for more information: Tubal ligation problems: A helpful explanation

Some of our patients do have problems directly associated with their tubal ligation and many will report improvement after tubal reversal surgery.

Tubal ligation symptoms: Our recommendations

If you are experiencing problems related to your tubal ligation then we recommend you be evaluated by your doctor for other treatable medical or gynecological causes.

If your symptoms started soon after your tubal ligation (weeks to months) then the tubal ligation could have contributed to your symptoms or it is equally possible the tubal ligation is not responsible.

If your symptoms started long after your tubal ligation (months to years) then it is less likely your tubal ligation is responsible.

Tubal ligation symptoms: Should I have a reversal?

If you are experiencing tubal ligation symptoms then the first question you should ask yourself is do you want more children?

If you would like to have more children then having a tubal reversal is a reasonable first line consideration. Tubal reversal surgery will restore fertility, allow evaluation for causes of tubal ligation symptoms, and provide you with a possible treatment for tubal ligation symptoms.

If you are uncertain about having more children or don’t want to become pregnant then you should be evaluated for other possible causes of tubal ligation symptoms. If no other explanation can be found then you could consider tubal reversal for evaluation and possible treatment of tubal ligation symptoms.

Hi I’m 34 and I had my tubes tied, cut, and burned 14yrs ago after my thirds child. My op report is missing and I was wondering if I’d be a good candidate for reversal?

We can reverse most tubal ligations….even if you have no records!

Many patients will come to us without records because they know we can repair most tubal ligation procedures…well over 90% of the time.

You should try to get your tubal ligation operative and pathology reports by going to the medical records department in the hospital where your tubal ligation was performed.

You should be able to request a copy of your tubal ligation operative report and a copy of the pathology report (a pathology report is only created when a segment of the tube is removed (typical with tubal ligations that involve tying and cutting the tubes). We can review these records free of charge.

You can personally request your record from the hospital where your tubal ligation was done using our Medical Records Release/Request form: Medical Records Release Form

You dont have to have your records to have tubal reversal at our center. You should consider our optional screening laparoscopy if you cannot get your tubal ligation records. Many patients come to us for reversal without records because they know we can repair most tubal ligations.

We charge $6,400 for tubal reversal surgery. Many women may not be able to obtain their records…some will have surgery because they know we can repair most tubal ligations. Others will add on a screening laparoscopy.

Please be aware that starting April 1st 2019 the fee for reversal surgery will increase to $6,900 and the scheduling fee will increase to $150. If you want to avoid the higher fees then you should schedule your surgery before April 1st or start a Reversal Prepayment Account.

If you choose to have a screening laparoscopy we can look with a camera during the surgery and see if your tubes are repairable. If your tubes are not repairable or then we would offer you a refund of your surgical fee.
