The fallopian tube is approximately 10 cm in average length prior to tubal ligation surgery.

Ligation (tying) and resection (removal) of a portion of the fallopian tube is the most frequent method of blocking the tubes. The amount removed will typically be about .5 - 3 cm and, allowing for some damage to the ends of the tube, there should be ample tube remaining for tubotubal anastomosis.
Mechanical occlusion (blockage) of the tubes by rings, clips, bands usually damages 2 cm or less of each fallopian tube and rejoining the healthy tissue usually results in 7 - 8 cm tubal lengths.
Tubal coagulation or cautery (burning) usually causes the most damage to the tube. However, even women with very short tubal lengths remaining may become pregnant, including those women with only one tube. This means in nearly all cases Dr Berger is able to reverse tubal sterilization regardless of the specific type of method used to block the tubes originally.
The operative report (and in the case of resection TL's the pathology report) of your tubal ligation can be faxed to us so Dr Berger can determine in advance if tubal reversal is likely to be successful. If you can not obtain your operative report and the type of tubal ligation method is unknown, Dr. Berger can begin your surgery with diagnostic laparoscopy to examine your fallopian tubes.
In the Message Board excerpts below, Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center patients and staff discuss tubal lengths. On the Message Board, the order of posts reading down from top to bottom of the page is from the most recent to the original message. Here they are in the reverse order with the earliest first.

| LISA C. | Hello Everyone!! Does any one have tubal lengths of 4cm L and 4 cm R and they have been successful in conceiving? | |
| taalah | Is that what you have left or what they took out when you had TL done? I'm sorry I can't help more, but I don't know if they took out that much. Most doctors like to see 3cm or less taken out, but don't give up. You may still be able to have TR done. Sorry I can't help more. Good Luck! | |
| khadija | If you go to the PG report page you will see lots of women who get PG with your lengths, some even as little as 2 cm. Have you had the TR yet? If not, send your records to the office and DR B will go over them and tell you what he thinks. If you have not had the TR there is really no way to see how much you have unless you do the TR. It all depends on what kind of TL you had, what part they took from, just things like that. If you have or you can get your records from the DR who did your TL, just fax them over to DR B's office and they will get right back to you. Wishing you the very best. Khadija | |
| khadija | Sorry, I just read you had your TR in May. Welcome to the TTC. May 19 was only little over a week ago. I'm glad to see you up and talking. I see lots of people get PG with your lengths, just make sure you know when you O so you can do everything to get your BFP. I got PG the first try. I just had my TR march 31, 2005. If you need answers to any questions, just ask. I will be happy to help you in any way I can. Khadija | |
