The Sarah P. Duke Gardens, often spoken of as the "Crown Jewel of Duke University," occupies 55 acres in the heart of the University's West Campus, adjacent to Duke University Medical Center.
It is recognized as one of the premier public gardens in the United States, renowned both for landscape design and the quality of horticulture, each year attracting more than 300,000 visitors from all over the world.
Duke University Chapel is gothic in design patterned after the original Canterbury Cathedral. A 210-foot tower soars skyward, housing a fifty-bell carillon. A 5,000-pipe organ was built into the rear of the nave several decades after the chapel’s construction. Sunlight streams through 77 stained glass windows.
Coker Arboretum

Coker Arboretum (5.3 acres) is an arboretum within the North Carolina Botanical Garden on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is open daily without charge. The arboretum was established in 1903 by Dr. William Chambers Coker, the university's first professor of botany, who loved East Asian species and added many throughout the 1920s into the 1940s, including conifers and one Metasequoia, as well as daffodils and daylilies.

Duke Lemur Center (Durham)

Duke Lemur Center studies and cares for more lemurs than any other institution. They have done that for longer, with more lemurs, and with more different species of lemur than any other institution in the world. They want to know everything there is to know about lemurs, so they can do everything possible to save these amazing, endangered animals.
The Lemur Center is open to the public by appointment only. All visitors must be on a guided tour led by a staff member or docent. It is not possible to "just stop by and see the animals." Visits can be arranged Monday through Saturday by calling the Center at 919/489-3364 x 0. During the spring and summer months it is not unusual for all of the tours to be booked up to two weeks in advance so you should make your plans early!
