How Long Should You Wait To Get Pregnant After Reversal? A Recommendation

How long should you wait to get pregnant after reversal surgery? What is the recommended amount of time to wait? This is one of the most common questions we are asked by our patients.

Dr. Monteith advises patients they can start trying to become pregnant as soon as they feel comfortable after his reversal surgery. Why?

patients-travel-from-idaho-because-of-his-great-skillsMany doctors tell you to wait one cycle, one month, three months, 6 months, etc after tubal reversal before you become pregnant. When there are many, different, vague answers to a single question it is usually because there is no data to support the best correct answer.

Often patients are told they need to give themselves time to heal or time for inflammation or swelling to go down or time for their bodies to rest. Although these simple explanations sound good…none of them are accurate.

Many doctors tell patients this because they believe the answer to be correct or that is what they were taught during their training.

Often doctors were taught this answer by an older doctor who was also taught this answer by the older doctor before them. When you look at this pattern you may often find the answer to your question has been passed down for years by many different doctors and may not be based on the most accurate and current medical information.

Dr. Monteith advises patients they can start trying as soon as they feel comfortable.

Many of Dr. Monteith’s patients, like the mother who submitted this testimonial, become pregnant soon after tubal reversal. Most reversal patients will become pregnant within the first year. Many will go on to have several pregnancies years after the reversal surgery.

One risk of tubal reversal is the tubes can heal closed with scar tissue. Dr. Monteith estimates this happens approximately 6% to 12% of the time. If this happens it is usually within the first 6 months of having reversal surgery.

Dr. Monteith will often advise patients he cannot predict who will have this complication…..so when trying to explain his recommendations for not waiting a specific amount of time, Dr. Monteith will often tell patients,

“Lets assume you will be the patient who will develop scar tissue and blockage of the fallopian tubes. If this does happen to you then when is the best time for you to get pregnant after tubal reversal surgery?”

Dr. Monteith’s recommendations on how long to wait to become pregnant after tubal reversal: whenever you feel comfortable enough to resume sexual activity then you may do so.

How Long Should You Wait To Get Pregnant After Reversal? No Need To Wait

Although it is easy to assume any early pregnancy after surgery will be in the fallopian tube (ectopic), the evidence collected by Dr. Monteith does not support this assumption. Many of his patients become successfully pregnant soon after surgery. Many also become pregnant more than once. Unfortunately some patients may be hurting their chances by waiting to become pregnant after tubal reversal.

Dr. Monteith was once told by a wise person….there is no great time to ever become pregnant….so why not take it when you can get it?
