Dr. Monteith is the Medical Director of A Personal Choice. He is a fertility surgeon who has been in practice since 2001. He has dedicated his career to helping both women and couples through corrective microsurgical tubal surgery.

Dr. Monteith’s career in corrective tubal surgery began in 2008. After completing a microsurgery training course at the Cleveland Clinic and a six month training mentorship in tubal ligation reversal surgery under Dr. Gary Berger, Dr. Monteith began to exclusively specialize in fertility surgery.

Since 2008, Dr. Monteith has gained extensive expertise in reversing all types of tubal ligations and in repairing blocked fallopian tubes caused by gynecological diseases.

Dr. Monteith has the distinct privilege of being the first surgeon in the world to report successful pregnancy within the peer reviewed medical literature after reversal of transcervical hysteroscopic tubal sterilization.

Professional Background

Dr. Monteith graduated from college in the top three of his class and with honors from Xavier University of Louisiana. He attended medical school at the prestigious University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, which was consistently ranked among the top four medical schools in the United States by national surveys. While at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Monteith received a prestigious Howard Hughes research fellowship to research molecular genetics.

He completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his residency, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. During his tenure as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Monteith served in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, N.C. and practiced obstetrics and advanced surgical gynecology. He continued teaching residents and medical students in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology, participated in a private obstetrics practice, and delivered babies and helped care for many high-risk pregnancies. He developed extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery and the surgical treatment of advanced gynecologic diseases. Dr. Monteith brings with him the experience of providing over ten years of obstetrical care and this allows him to better counsel tubal surgery patients about pregnancy concerns before his patients have tubal reversal surgery.

Dr. Monteith is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and by virtue of his board certification Dr. Monteith possesses special knowledge, skills and professional capability in the medical and surgical care of women related to pregnancy and disorders of the female reproductive system.

Dr. Monteith left his successful practice in obstetrics and gynecology after seven years. He felt his true calling as a physician was in using his skills to help those who other doctors would not or could not help. He felt his true calling as a surgeon was in using his skills to perform procedures, which make significant differences in his patient’s lives. This is his view of what it truly means to be both a physician and a surgeon.

History of A Personal Choice

Dr. Monteith joined Dr. Berger’s staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as a tubal ligation reversal specialist in 2008. After five years and over 1200 tubal surgeries, Dr. Monteith was promoted to the Medical Director of the reversal center in 2013.

In 2014, Dr. Monteith relocated the specialty center to its current location in Raleigh, North Carolina. This move provided his tubal surgery patients a newer surgical facility, better hotel accommodations, outstanding access to restaurants and shopping, and closer access to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Dr. Monteith used this move as an opportunity for a new beginning and he renamed the practice A Personal Choice because he believes all patients should have the ability to make personal choices about their fertility desires without the undue influences of others.

So many doctors tried to talk us out of it-wanted us to do IVF to get our money-however praise God we went with this because it does WORK! Dr M is amazing and his staff! My fiancee had her tubes tied nearly 6 years ago, she still has regular periods and we would really like to have a baby she is 31 years old. What are our chances?

    Dr. Monteith Reply

    Andrew
The chance of pregnancy is about 60% on average but we need to see her tubal ligation records. We should be able to help you. We can reverse most tubal ligation procedures.

You should send us your tubal ligation reports for a free review and we can let you know if you are a candidate for reversal surgery. Your reports can be obtained from the medical records department where your tubal ligation surgery was performed.

We charge $6400 total plus $125 to schedule and we are located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Please be aware that starting April 1st 2019 the fee for reversal surgery will increase to $6,900 and the scheduling fee will increase to $150. If you want to avoid the higher fees then you should schedule your surgery before April 1st or start a Reversal Prepayment Account.

Patients pay in full and out-of-pocket at the time of scheduling. All you have to pay for in addition to the surgical fee is the cost of travel, hotel, and food.

On average the chance of pregnancy after tubal ligation reversal is about 60% if you are under age 42.

We do have a prepayment tubal reversal plan that allows you to save towards your reversal over a 3 year period.

Although $6,400 seems expensive…the alternative treatment in-vitro fertilization (IVF) average $12,000 to $14,000 and is about 40% successful!

The main advantage to tubal reversal is that every month you have a chance and you can become pregnant more than once.

The following link will answer most of your questions about reversal. This is the MOST HELPFUL INFORMATION to read when considering reversal at our office. Each question has a link to more information about the question:

I had a ligation tubal in 2010. I also had Novasure Ablation at that time. I still get a period every month for about 4 days. Would I still be a candidate for tubal reversal?

    Dr. Monteith Reply

In general it is recommended that you do not become pregnant after having an ablation procedure.

Tubal reversal and pregnancy are possible if you are having regular periods of at least 3 days duration after your ablation. All pregnancies after ablation are considered high risk. Most IVF doctors will recommend using a gestational surrogate. IVF costs average $14,000 and you will have to pay the surrogate even more.

If you are not having periods then we would not consider you a candidate for reversal. There is no medical treatment to make your periods return.

Ablation will decrease the chance of pregnancy because it permanently damages the lining and muscle of the uterus.

If your periods are light then you do have some functioning endometriumm but we are not always certain if it is enough to allow for pregnancy. There is no accurate way to be certain.

We cannot provide an accurate percentage about the success of women getting pregnant after reversal with a prior ablation because there are no large scale studies looking at this. We have had women become pregnant naturally after tubal reversal with a prior ablation but don’t have a large enough group of these patients to provide meaningful statistics.

You can see our patients who have had pregnancy success after endometrial ablation here: Ablation pregnancies

Studies looking at women who have become pregnant after ablation show that about 50% will miscarry and about 50% will have live born babies.

You should read these six articles I wrote about ablation, reversal, and the risks of pregnancy: Tubal Reversal and Ablation

The ablation will decrease the chances of pregnancy but if you are having regular monthly periods of at least three days duration then pregnancy is certainly possible. If you are not having regular periods then I would advise against a reversal because pregnancy is not likely.

In general pregnancy is not recommended after ablation because each pregnancy is at higher risk; miscarriage, growth restriction, early delivery, c-section and adherent placenta. The literature suggests pregnancies are at higher risk but many will do well.

It is possible to become pregnant after having an endometrial ablation and then a tubal reversal and have a healthy pregnancy if you are having regular periods of at least three days duration every month. Please call us at (919) 977-5050 if you have any additional questions about tubal reversal.

To be considered a candidate by our office you need to be having regular periods (every month) and these periods need to last for at least three days.

All patients with ablations need a consult with me (Dr Monteith) either by phone or in person before they can schedule reversal surgery.

Hello I am wanting to get my tubes untied. I believe my doctor only took off a little bit off each tube. I also have endometriosis. But despite having it I’ve had two full term healthy pregnancy’s. I am 26 years old as well, 5’11 weighing 198. I didn’t know if I am a good candidate to get my tubes untied. Thank you
