FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 10, 2011
(CHAPEL HILL, NC) – Dr. Gary S. Berger, M.D., director of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal, today announced more than 10,000 tubal ligation reversal procedures have been performed at his specialty facility. Dr. Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith have the only surgical practice in the country dedicated exclusively to tubal ligation reversal surgery.
Dr. Berger, one of the pioneers of tubal reversal surgery, is a reproductive surgeon who has spent more than 30 years specializing in outpatient tubal reversal surgery. He has performed more than 9,000 tubal reparative procedures and is widely recognized as the tubal reversal doctor with the most experience with the tubal reversal procedure. Dr. Monteith joined Dr. Berger in 2008 and has performed over 1000 procedures to reconnect the fallopian tubes in women who have had a previous sterilization. Patients come from across the United States and abroad to have their fertility restored with the one hour, low-cost, outpatient procedure. The microsurgery techniques Dr. Berger pioneered reduce tissue injury, blood loss, post-operative pain, the risk of infection, and recovery time.
Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have created a unique environment for women who come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal. Since the facility is dedicated to caring for tubal reversal patients only, patients enjoy a high nurse-to-patient ratio with one or two nurses devoted specifically to caring for each patient. All of the nurses have advanced certification in cardiac life support (ACLS) and the anesthesiologists are medical doctors (MDs) with board certification in anesthesiology.
Although tubal reversal surgery may not be right for everyone, a comprehensive study conducted by Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal in 2009 concluded that Dr. Berger is able to repair the fallopian tubes in 98% of women who have come for surgery and over two-thirds of his patients become pregnant following surgery. The study report includes more than 5000 tubal reversal procedures performed by Dr. Berger between July 2000 and June 2008. It is the largest and most definitive study in existence that provides information on the outcome of tubal reversal surgery.
At the conclusion of the study interval, 66 percent of the women in Dr. Berger’s study had reported pregnancies. The pregnancy rate ranged from 80 percent for women under 30 to 31 percent for women 40 years of age and older. The highest pregnancy rate (90 percent) was among women age under 30 after reversal of a previous ring or clip method of sterilization.
Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
