Is Essure reversal surgery possible?
Dr. Monteith specializes in tubal reversal and Essure reversal surgery.
Since 2008, Dr. Monteith has performed over 300 surgeries to remove Essure devices.
As a result of his extensive experience removing Essure devices, Dr. Monteith has developed a technique, which minimizes the risk of coil fracture and can provide patients with the opportunity to become pregnant again naturally.
During the procedure the devices are removed using a en bloc dissection. This allows for complete removal of the Essure devices with the surrounding scar tissue. The risk for device fragmentation is much lower with this type of surgical dissection.
Dr. Monteith offers two types of Essure surgery: Essure reversal (allows pregnancy) and Essure removal (removes devices to help treat symptoms but does not allow pregnancy).
Essure reversal vs. Essure removal: What’s the difference?
Each surgery beings the same way. A small 4 inch incision is made along the bikini line over the pubic hair area (similar to a C-section incision). The Essure devices are visualized and removed intact with surrounding scar tissue and the PET fibers inside using an en bloc dissection. After the devices are removed the surgical procedures are completed differently.

Pregnancy Success After Essure reversal
Pregnancy Removal After Essure removal
Essure reversal. After the devices are removed the remaining healthy fallopian tubes are ‘re-inserted’ into the uterine cavity. This procedure is called a tubouterine implantation. The chance of pregnancy is about 40%. Most patients will become pregnant within the first year and Dr. Monteith recommends a planned C-section delivery for all pregnancies after Essure reversal. This procedure is recommended for women who wish to become naturally pregnant in the future.
Essure removal. After the devices are removed the area where the devices were removed is sutured closed. The end of the fallopian tube where the device was removed is also sutured closed. Natural pregnancy is not possible with Essure removal alone. This procedure is recommended for women who are having Essure related symptoms but who do not wish to become pregnant in the future.
All Essure related surgeries are performed as outpatient procedures in
Dr. Monteith’s AAAHC Accredited Surgical Facility.
