What is a fimbriectomy tubal ligation?
Fimbriectomy is a type of tubal ligation where the doctor removes the very end of the fallopian tube. Fimbriectomy tubal ligation is not common.
Fimbriectomy type tubal ligation: Not Common!
Most tubal ligations involve either removing a small segment in the middle of the fallopian tube or burning a small segment of tube directly in the middle or placing a tubal ring or tubal clip in the middle of the fallopian tube. Reversal of these types of tubal ligation can be up to 80% to 90% successful depending on the method.
Essure tubal occlusion involves inserting a small coil into each fallopian tube. This causes scar tissue to form inside the tube and this results in occlusion, or closure, of the fallopian tube in the area where the coil was placed. We specialize in reversal of Essure sterilization and the chance of pregnancy success after Essure reversal ranges from 35% to 40%.
Can fimbriectomy tubal ligation reversal be done?
Fimbriectomy tubal ligation is when the doctor cuts off the very end of the tube. The very end of the fallopian tube is called the fimbrial region of the tube.
The fimbria are like very fine fingers that help to sweep the egg from the surface of the ovary and into the fallopian tube. The fimrbia are very important in helping guide the egg into the opening of the tube.
Fimbriectomy tubal ligation reversal is possible. The ends of the tube are opened using microsurgical techniques and the edges of the open tube are sutured back to help create a new opening for the tube. The chance of pregnancy after fimbriectomy reversal ranges from 15% to 40% and depends on the age of the patient and the length and health of remaining fallopian tube.
