Getting Pregnant After Tubal Ligation Reversal Surgery: What to Expect

getting-pregnant-after-tubal-ligation-reversal-surgery-is-easyEvery year, more than 140 million babies are born worldwide. Some people who don’t want children decide that getting their tubes tied (known as tubal ligation) is a good idea since it is a highly reliable form of permanent birth control.

If you did this but are now thinking about having children again, you might be wondering if it is possible to reverse the ligation procedure.

With tubal ligation reversal surgery, you can indeed reverse this procedure. But what exactly does it involve? Why is reversal mistakenly thought to be difficult?

What are the chances of success if you do decide to go through with the procedure?

Keep reading and learn more about tubal ligation, tubal reversal, and your pregnancy success rates.

What You Need To Know About Tubal Ligation

Before we jump into the details of tubal reversal surgery, you should first understand some of the science behind tubal ligation. Tubal ligation is a procedure that should never be taken lightly. There are different types of tubal ligation, and some are harder to reverse than others.

For example, Essure tubal ligation is known for being one of the hardest types of tubal ligation to reverse. This is because of how strictly the tubes are tied. In general, tubal ligation involves the fallopian tubes being blocked or closed through many different ways.

This may be done by physically tying the tubes, clamping them down with a special device, or cutting the tubes. The goal of this procedure is to prevent the fallopian tubes from releasing fertile eggs into the uterus, where a sperm might fertilize them. By tying and closing the tubes, they would be unable to release any fertile eggs into the uterus.

This, of course, would prevent the possibility of pregnancy. Tubal ligation is successful more than 99% of the time. It is even a more reliable birth control method than birth control pills or condoms.

The Details On Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation should be considered a permanent type of birth control. So, you won’t need to worry about using diaphragms, condoms, or birth control pills as long as you have your tubes tied. The chance of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation procedure (tubal ligation failure) is less than 2%.

Many people who opt for tubal ligation feel, at the time, that they really do not want to have any children in the future. However, many often end up changing their minds, especially if they get their tubes tied early in life. Keep in mind that getting this procedure reversed is not at all impossible.

However, reversing the procedure can be quite difficult. As mentioned before, some types of tubal ligation are much more difficult to reverse than others. More than that, just because you get your tubal ligation reversed doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be able to get pregnant again.

The chances of getting pregnant after reversing this procedure will depend on a variety of things. Most often, it has to do with how healthy your fallopian tubes are and if the tubes can move a fertile egg through them into the uterus.

But what exactly should you expect if you decide to go through with the tubal ligation reversal surgery?

What to Expect Before the Procedure

While the procedure for tubal ligation is relatively simple and fast, the procedure for tubal reversal is much more complex and may take much longer. A lot of care and attention needs to be taken into account when going through this surgery because, as mentioned before, it may not always be a success. The main thing to keep in mind is that it is essential that you choose a good doctor for this procedure.

Ideally, you should choose a doctor that has extensive experience with reversing all types of tubal ligation. A more experienced doctor will have more success than a doctor that has only done this procedure a few times before. But even the most experienced doctor may have some problems reversing some types of tubal ligation.

Whatever the case, you will also need to be a good candidate for this surgery before you can go through with it. Your age is a big factor. If you are already older, around 44 years old or older, you may not be as good of a candidate for this surgery as a younger woman.

This is because, even if the surgery is successful, your age will negatively impact your ability to get pregnant. The health of your reproductive organs is also another important factor. If you have any health conditions that negatively impact the health of your ovaries, uterus, vagina, or fallopian tubes, then you may not be a good candidate for this surgery as you may not be able to get pregnant even if the surgery is a success.

What You Need to Know

The type of tubal ligation you got initially will also play a big role. As mentioned before, Essure is one of the hardest types of tubal ligation to reverse. Some doctors won’t even attempt reversing this kind of tubal ligation reversal, and you will have to likely seek out a special doctor to do it for you.

you-can-get-pregnant-after-tubal-ligation-if-you-have-reversal-surgeryOn the other hand, certain types of tubal ligation will be much easier to reverse. For example, if your fallopian tubes were only ligated with clamps and the fallopian tubes weren’t cut or removed, this procedure should be relatively easy to reverse. All the surgeon would need to do is remove the clamps and ensure that the fallopian tubes are healthy and structurally sound.

If parts of your fallopian tubes were removed, then this will be much harder to fix. However, it isn’t impossible. But if there are large portions of your fallopian tubes removed, the tubes may have a hard time delivering a fertile egg to the uterus even if the surgery went smoothly.

As long as you are a good candidate for the surgery and you are in good health, your surgeon should allow you to go through with the surgery. But what should you expect if the surgery is successful? What will your pregnancy success rates be?

Understanding Pregnancy Success Rates After the Procedure

A variety of factors will determine the rate of success when it comes to getting pregnant after this procedure. As mentioned before, your age is very important. If you are already too old to have children, your doctor will likely not approve you for the surgery in the first place.

But if you are approved for the surgery, and it is a success, it may be possible for you to get pregnant even if you are older, but it will be more difficult. More than that, older women have a higher risk of giving birth to children with developmental issues such as autism or Down’s syndrome.

Older women also have a higher risk of birth complications. So, while you may have a chance of getting pregnant after your tubal reversal surgery, it may not be a good idea to get pregnant if you are older. Another factor that may affect your chances is if you happen to be infertile.

Many people don’t realize that they are infertile. Usually, tests are required to know more about one’s fertility. Women may be infertile for a variety of reasons.

Often, medical concerns have something to do with it. Conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other issues can contribute to infertility. Usually, your doctor will test to see if you are infertile before going through with the reversal procedure.

Your doctor may even test your partner to see if he has any fertility issues. If you are your partner are both fertile and if the reversal surgery goes as plant, you should have pretty good chances of getting pregnant. Getting pregnant after this surgery may take some time, so it is important to be patient.

The Chances of Getting Pregnant

Between 40% and 85% of all women are able to get pregnant after going through this procedure. Some might get pregnant right away, while for others, it might take an entire year to get pregnant. If you find you are unable to get pregnant within a year after the surgery, you may not be able to conceive.

praying-for-tubal-ligation-failureThis may happen for a variety of reasons. For example, your initial tubal ligation surgery may have been too destructive. In this case, you may not have healthy fallopian tubes that will allow a fertile egg to travel through the tubes and to the uterus.

This may occur because too much of the fallopian tube was removed. There may also be scar tissue around the fallopian tubes. In this case, the tissue surrounding the tubes would likely be too thick to let a fertile egg through.

Some very skilled surgeons can fix this problem, but excessive scar tissue around the fallopian tubes will often result in infertility. Around 12 months after the reversal procedure and if you have not become pregnant, you will likely need to get an X-ray to see if your fallopian tubes are still as open as they were after the procedure.

The Procedure and the Recovery Process

You might be wondering what you should expect from the tubal reversal procedure itself as well as the recovery process. The procedure is relatively straightforward. While it is an invasive procedure, you won’t have to stay overnight.

When it is time for the procedure, you will need general anesthesia. When you are under the effects of this drug, you won’t be aware of the world around you, and you also won’t be able to feel any pain during the procedure.

The Details

The surgeon will then proceed to restore the structure of the fallopian tubes so that they remain open and healthy. The entire procedure will take 1 to 2 hours. After the procedure with Dr Monteith, you do not need to stay in the hospital. Instead you will stay in a hotel room overnight with an adult friend who will travel with you to help you recover from surgery.

In most cases, however, you should be able to go home the day after your procedure. You may experience some pain and swelling in the treated area after the procedure. This is normal, and your doctor will likely give you some painkillers to help you through the discomfort.

After a week or two, you should be able to return to most of your normal duties, including work. As you recover, you should avoid trying to get pregnant right away. This is because your fallopian tubes will likely be swollen and still recovering.

So, it is best to give yourself a full two to four weeks (or longer, for some women) before you try return to your daily duties.

You can start trying to become pregnant after reversal as soon as you feel comfortable enough to try.
