Can fimbriae be repaired?
Occasionally women can have blockage at the very end of the fallopian tube…the part of the tube that is near the ovary. This blockage can either be from a tubal ligation procedure or scar tissue from a prior infection or surgery.
Women who have blockage in this area will often wonder can fimbriae be repaired.
Many times this type of blockage can be undone.
Can fimbriae be repaired after tubal ligation?
Tubal ligation procedures that involve the end of the tube are not common. This type of tubal ligation is called a fimbriectomy.
During a traditional tubal ligation, the doctor removes a small segment from the middle of the tube.
During a fimbriectomy type tubal ligation, the doctor removes the very end of the tube or the fimbriae.

The chance of pregnancy depends on the age of the patient and the health and length of the remaining fallopian tube. The alternative treatment to fimbriectomy sterilization reversal is in vitro fertilization. IVF success averages 38% for each cycle attempted.

For many women who have undergone fimbriectomy, IVF may offer a better chance at becoming pregnant than would reversal of fimbriectomy.
Can fimbriae be repaired after blockage from scar tissue?
The most common reason tubes are blocked on the end is from scar tissue. Often this scar tissue comes from a previous pelvic infection or previous pelvic surgery. This scar tissue can be released and often this will allow the fimbrial tissue to open up and be able to accept an egg. The success of repairing fimbriae depends on the health of the remaining fallopian tube.
If the damage to the fallopian tube is minimal then repairing the fimbriae could over success higher than 40%. If the fallopian tube has major damage then the chance of pregnancy success could be lower.
