Getting Pregnant With Essure
If you have Essure and want to become pregnant you have two options: in-vitro fertilization or Essure reversal surgery.
It is possible to have IVF and get pregnant with Essure. Unfortunately, there are no good statistics on the chances of pregnancy when you undergo IVF treatment with Essure coils in place. We are not certain if the Essure devices hurt the success of IVF or if they increase the risk of pregnancy.
Preliminary information seems to suggest it is possible to have IVF and get pregnant with Essure.
Essure reversal surgery
We began performing Essure reversal surgery in 2009. We were the first group in the world to report successful pregnancy after Essure reversal. We have since published more information on the subject of Essure reversal and we maintain an active section on our website for physicians to reference when removing Essure coils.
The chance of getting pregnant with Essure reversal is 35% to 40%. The surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery at our facility. Patients are quickly ambulatory. Most patients will become pregnant within the first 12 months of surgery and we have had several patients have more than one baby.
We have not had many complications with Essure reversal. The main risk of surgery is the risk of uterine rupture while in labor. Since 2009 we have only had one patient report a rupture of the uterus and neither she nor her baby had any delivery complications.
It is possible to get pregnant with Essure reversal and we were the first doctors to prove it can be done and pregnancy is possible!
