Can you have a baby after Essure?
You can have a baby after Essure. You have three courses of action:
- Pray for Essure sterilization failure (or pray you don’t depending on your desires)
- Get Essure surgically reversed
- Have In-vitro fertilization treatment
Essure failure. Essure is intended to be permanent but Essure is not always 100% successful at preventing pregnancy.
The exact chance of Essure failure is not known. If you have both Essure devices successfully inserted and you have the 3 month Essure confirmation test showing that both tubes are blocked then the chance of Essure failure is likely less than 2%.
Most pregnancies from Essure failure will happen within the first 5 years after the devices have been inserted.
Surgical reversal of Essure. Dr. Monteith specializes in surgical reversal of Essure. To reverse Essure tubal blockage, Dr. Monteith removes the devices and reinserts the remaining healthy fallopian tube into the uterus and back into the cavity of the uterus. He performs this surgery as outpatient surgery and the chance of pregnancy success is approximately 40%.
In-vitro fertilization treatment (IVF). IVF is an option to have a baby after Essure. Recent research has shown the success of IVF is decreased when the Essure devices are allowed to remain in the fallopian tubes during IVF treatment. A single cycle of IVF is approximately 38% successful and the average cost is around $14,000. Removing the Essure devices before reversal may help increase the chance of IVF success.
