Vasectomy reversal: A simple procedure that takes time

Vasectomy reversal is both a ‘simple‘ and ‘complex‘ surgical procedure.

Vasectomy reversal is ‘simple‘ because the procedure is performed on anatomical structures (vas deferens) located outside of a major body cavity and immediately underneath the scrotal skin. Vasectomy reversal is ‘complex‘ because the vas deferens are narrow and require microsurgical precision and meticulous surgical technique to successfully rejoin the separated ends of the vas deferens.

Vasectomy reversal can be performed in a doctor’s office using local anesthesia only or in an operating room using general anesthesia. The anesthesia choice of most vasectomy reversal doctors is primarily determined by how much access the doctor has to an operating room and the amount charged by the surgical center for use of the operating room facilities.

We provide vasectomy reversal in our facility under general anesthesia for maximal patient comfort and at an affordable cost.

Vasectomy reversal under general anesthesia provides maximal comfort

Although reversing vasectomy is a simple procedure, the procedure does take 2 to 3 hours to rejoin the vas deferens using microsurgery techniques.

Many vasectomy reversal providers will perform vasectomy reversal in an office setting using oral medication to reduce anxiety and local anesthetic to decrease pain. This can be a perfectly acceptable way to perform vasectomy because it helps lower the cost of the reversal for patients. If these same doctors performed vasectomy reversal in a hospital operating room they would have to charge $3,000 to $10,000 more to cover the hospital facility and anesthesia related charges. This would make vasectomy reversal unaffordable for many patients.

A Personal Choice is dedicated exclusively to female and male sterilization reversal surgery. We are able to maintain our own dedicated operating room and this allows us to provide our patients with a comfortable and affordable reversal experience without compromising safety.

Vasectomy reversal under general anesthesia

Dr. Monteith performs vasectomy reversal under general anesthesia and with long local anesthetic for the maximal comfort of his patients. Vasectomy reversal patients are cared for by dedicated anesthesia and nursing staff in an environment dedicated to reversal of sterilization. General anesthesia allows patients to have total unawareness of the 3-hour procedure and the long acting anesthetic provides relief of pain for up to 3 to 6 hours after the vasectomy reversal.
